Dry food necessary

On February 17th, the dog food stock of Sandra’s shelter in Serbia will be completely depleted: what will her 74 dogs eat then?

Due to the lack of kibbles, Sandra already had to stop taking care of some stray dogs

Her shelter is overcrowded, but there isn’t any adoption at the moment and online calls for donations do not work.

Facing overwhelmed associations that can no longer help her, Sandra stands alone to take care of the dogs and she can’t work…

With the onset of winter, Sandra has more and more to do and dogs need more food to withstand the cold...

Saddled in vet debts, she can no longer cope with the situation…

We want to send her 3 200 kg of dog food in emergency to allow dogs to face the coming weeks.

100 % transparency guaranteed

1. Sandra cannot buy dog food on credit anymore : soon the 74 dogs in her shelter won’t have anything to eat!

Here is the very last dog food order Sandra could get on Saturday February 9th at her usual shop. That will feed the dogs until February 17th...

In Serbia, Sandra gathers in her private shelter 74 sick, injured or endangered dogs that she takes out from the streets. But lately, difficulties have dramatically increased…

In 2019, the dog food shop allowed Sandra to buy on credit up to a 200 € per month limit, instead of 800 €/month in 2018: in a few days only, Sandra won’t have a penny left on her allowed credit.

"Saturday February the 9th, I went to the upper limit of my month credit. This last order should help me to feed the dogs until February the 17th. After that, I don’t know yet what I will find for feeding the dogs..." Sandra says with concern.

2. Sandra’s shelter is overcrowded: with so many dogs she cannot deal with food financing anymore

While 3 of her dogs had just been adopted, Sandra found Mitza : how could have she left her all on her own freezing cold like this? Mitza is suffering consequences of distemper. Even if trying to walk, her back legs stayed uncared for too long and will stay paralyzed for the rest of her life… She’s now trying to get used to her wheelchair.

Crystal was found tied up in a Gipsy camp: if she had stayed there, she would have had plenty of babies and been left uncared her whole life. Sandra found a way to get her at her place and have her spayed.

Dora was living in an area where lots of dogs have been poisoned. If left there, she would certainly have died the same way: that’s why Sandra took her in her shelter.

Sandra judges she can’t financially handle more than a half of the dogs currently living in her shelter.

Number of adoptions dramatically fell, so the number of dogs in the shelter continuously increases. "But I decently can’t leave a paralyzed, injured or endangered dog on its fate outside in the street; it’s more than I can endure!"

3. The French association that works with Sandra only deals with adoptions...

Little Marta was only 2 months old when she was run over by a car: her 2 back legs and pelvis were broken, but Sandra could have her treated. She’s been adopted since.

When Sandra found Kira, she was covered in parasites and her eyes and nose where infected and purulent... After spayed and treated, Kira finally found a new family.

Sandra manages to get some of the dogs she saved, treated and spayed adopted, particularly thanks to French association Un Coeur pour eux.

Unfortunately, this association cannot give any financial help to Sandra’s shelter. That’s precisely why they alerted us on the difficulties encountered by Sandra.

4. The only Serbian association involved in helping Sandra cannot bring her any help for the moment...

As often as possible, the Serbian association Beta Zajecar gives kibbles to help Sandra in her fight against the proliferation of stray dogs. Thanks to this food, Sandra makes them more confident and manages to catch and spay them. Unfortunately, Beta Zajecar hasn’t enough dog food left to help Sandra at the moment...

In Serbia, Sandra has knocked on every door : only Beta Zajecar association responded to her call.

As often as possible, this association provides kibbles for stray dogs Sandra feeds before being able to catch and sterilize them, but Beta Zajecar is facing her own difficulties at the moment : that’s why she asked us to set a specific collection for Sandra’s shelter...

5. There are not enough donations: buying dog food is impossible so far!

Online collections Sandra launches regularly in order to buy dog food do not work... On February 11th, this collection in order to pay a 785 € debt for dog food only reach 3 % of its goal…

Twice a month, Sandra launches calls for donations on Internet in order to pay her debts, but it doesn’t work: only 25 euros have been collected since 10 days the collection has been online..

"People know I'm not playing games with my dogs’ lives: all of them are spayed and neutered as soon as possible, and I struggle to save them no matter what. So they think there is no emergency anymore and they don’t give anything... Yet I’m indeed caught in the throat with these food expenses..." Sandra explains.

She feels trapped and discouraged.

6. Sandra cannot take care of stray dogs close to her village anymore

Sandra used to go out and feed that pack’s stray dogs every day when she could afford it: that way she could get them used to her in order to catch them and have them sterilized one after the other. Today, she cannot afford to feed them anymore, and nobody cares about these dogs... If we don’t do anything, all this work will need to be restarted from the beginning!

A band of about forty dogs lives along a road near the Danube where inhabitants come and leave their garbage…

"Those dogs were trapped in surrounding villages and dumped in this no man's land, far away from the first houses. That way nobody ever sees them, and everyone can forget about them", Sandra says in bitterness.

But man’s cruelty towards them made them turn totally wild : whenever she’s got enough food, Sandra goes to see them and tries to get their confidence in order to sterilize them one after the other. That’s how Sandra managed to save Sarah and her babies, or Sharenko, for instance.

But for several weeks, Sandra has had to stop this action due to the lack of dog food. These stray dogs stay on their own, without anybody to care about their proliferation...

7. If we don't reach the target, Sandra's 74 dogs won't receive any food

A failed collection on Animal Webaction

We are able to take action, we have already booked a truck and pallets, but we have to pay our transporter before February 18th.

If the collection fails, we will not be able to pay, the departure of the truck will be cancelled and none of the collected food will be delivered...

If the collection fails, we will refund all donors.

8. Sandra is riddled with vet debts : she had no other choice than to stop sterilizations...

Launched 6 weeks ago, this on-line collection aimed to pay vet debts stands still: without resources, Sandra must rely on the generosity of individual donors, that often don’t respond...

Because of her difficulties in finding enough money, Sandra has contracted large debts from the various veterinary offices in her sector.

"It has come to the point where I can’t have any dog operated, even for an emergency", Sandra says.

For each new operation, just as for the payment of what she owes to the vets, she can only rely on collection websites and on the generosity of individual donors, that often don’t respond...

9. Snow and cold are there : the dogs need even more attention!

Sandra’s shelter on February 7th, 2019 : cold and snow are there... While the dogs seem to be happy of this, for Sandra, winter causes much more work to do...

Sandra lives in large lowlands, where nothing stands in the way of the frozen wind. For this reason, during the winter, she must be even more careful about dogs health, particularly regarding the most fragiles among them.

Furthermore, Sandra has to clear the snow from the court, regularly check water bowls, that get frozen during the day...

And of course, the dogs spend more energy for maintaining their body temperature, so they need more food.

10. Here are some of the dogs we want to help with this collection

Betsy had a Sticker’s tumor, a kind of contact-transmissible cancer that only exists for the dogs. Betsy has been treated with hemotherapy and still lives at Sandra’s.

Boki was living with Gypsies. Terrorised, he had an impressive demodicosis and skin problems. Even if his hair grew back, he’s still anxiety sensitive: he’s still living in Sandra’s shelter until he finds a home that brings him the stability he needs.

Poor Billy was hit by car several times: she was suffering while walking. Sandra managed to eliminate most of these pains thanks to a chiropractic treatment. Affected by anaplasmosis, a disease conveyed by the bite of ticks and affecting immune system, Billy remains fragile: a good diet is essential for her..

Leona was living in Kosovo, where she was ran over twice in a row. Left for dead on the side of the road, only the cold of winter allowed his injuries not to be colonized by flies. Despite the distance, Sandra decided to go and help her while discovering her story on Internet : Leona had been surviving 1 whole month without back legs and without receiving any care! Operated to stop gangrene on one of her legs, she’s now safe at Sandra’s.

Former stray dog Sarah has for a long time been a medical mystery for Sandra as for the vets: she had huge difficulties in moving without but nobody could find the reason of this partial paralysis. Hydrotherapy made her make great progress, and the probable cause of her disability was finally identified: chemicals used in the fields where she used to wander.

Maza lived in the street for at least 5 years before Sandra took her in the shelter: her skin was in catastrophic state and she had lost all her hair. After 5 years at Sandra’s, her skin is healthy again, but some of her hair follicles were permanently destroyed. On these areas of her body, her hair will never come back.

Frankie is a small male who found himself paralyzed from the backside after a car accident. Hyperactive, Frankie still needed to let off steam: Sandra made him build a system so he could run. He gave him so rough treatment that Sandra had to fix it three times already! Frankie is still at Sandra’s... What is he going to eat in a few days?

Liza was taken to sterilization while she was on heat. She also was in really bad shape: she had a gaping wound on a hip and significant tumors on mammary glands. Liza is much better now: she needs dog food to go on!

Lucy lost both of her back paws since she was a puppie: she fell asleep on the tracks and tram cut off her legs. She survived like this during 2 or 3 years before Sandra found and helped her. She’s still living in the shelter until she finds a family....

Maxie was found in the street, moaning after her missing puppies, the udder filled with milk. 2 days later, a whole litter of puppies was found in another city, locked in a plastic bag. At Sandra’s, Maxie adopted those puppies as hers : 4 out of the 6 were finally saved and survived.

Sampson was living in a Gypsy camp, where he was kept attached by a plastic wire, which had largely damaged his neck. Sandra could save him… and now has to feed him.

Old Sharenko was a stray dog that let Sandra get close to him only the day he was too weak to escape... He has now joined Sandra’s guests. How will she manage to feed him?

11. A recent law forbids Sandra from using her car: to keep her shelter going, she has no choice but to incur a financial penalty or to pay for a taxi!

Sandra’s car shows some corrosion and other small defects which do not impact on its feature. Yet the new Serbian law defends vehicles with these defects : if Sandra is controlled while using this car, she will have to pay a fine...

And the vicious circle of debts continues: new legislation now requires cars to be in perfect condition in order to drive in Serbia, up to the body structure!

This is not the case with Sandra’s vehicle, which has some traces of corrosion among other things: therefore, Sandra must either incur the risk of paying a fine if controlled driving on her way to her pet food shop, either pay a taxi to pick up injured dogs or take them to the vet farther and farther from her home.

Her situation is becoming increasingly precarious...

12. Sandra works full time on animals: she can’t work and needs us!

Sandra has been dedicated on animals for 30 years...

The first time Sandra had to face the terrible situation of stray dogs was in 1988: as she went in a shelter to adopt her first dog, she was shocked by the awful living conditions the dogs had there.

Her hardly 2 months puppy had just spent 3 weeks closed in the basement nearly without food and water! This puppy is the one who triggered a vocation in Sandra that has only grown in the last 30 years.

After working for a newspaper company, she found another job to be more available for her animals. But she couldn’t count on anyone to take care of them properly in her absence, and after several of her cats and dogs died for this reason, she finally came to spend all of her time with animals.

She has invested all of her savings, her energy, her health, and her personal life in this cause, but everything relies on her…

She is continually living with the stress of knowing how to feed and treat her dogs, and she is exhausted. "I feel like I'm in a vicious circle...", she admits desperately.

We cannot let her down while she needs us so much !

13. What will the 3200 kg of dry food be used for ?

If the collection succeeds, the 3000kg collected will be given to the 74 dogs gathered in Sandra’s shelter.
