Dry food necessary

In Spain, special food is desperately needed for several puppies!

Isabel and the few other volunteers had to rescue many seriously injured dogs in recent weeks : they are overwhelmed with medical expenses.

However, several puppies are currently hosted at the shelter : aged from a few weeks to 2 months old, they all need special dog food to stay healthy, and to grow properly.

Mostly students, Isabel and the few other volunteers can't cover so many expenses, and can't afford to buy puppy food anymore.

We want to help them by sending 672 kg of puppy food as soon as possible.

100% transparency guaranteed

1. Several litters have joined the shelter in recent weeks: the puppies need special food, vaccines and care, the association can't pay for everything

On April 10th, there were only a few kibbles left at the bottom of a bag.... Puppies will have to eat standard kibbles, that are unsuitable for their energy needs

A call for donations launched by the association only a few days ago: it is already difficult for the volunteers to ensure that each dog at the shelter has enough to eat, the need for special food is impossible for them to meet!

The shelter now hosts 10 puppies and a nursing mother: all of them need special food. Coming from large breeds (Mastins), half of the puppies at the shelter need to eat very large quantities, a huge burden on the shelter's budget

Mayela had been hiding in bushes for several days to protect her pups when she was reported to the association. It was very difficult to catch her, as she was so frightened by the human presence for her and her little ones....

After breastfeeding her litter, Mayela now takes care of these three puppies, found abandoned when they were only a few days old...

In recent weeks, rescues have been coming one after the other, mostly for very young puppies, sometimes aged only a few days...

Isabel and the others managed to find foster care and/or adopters for some of them, but there are too many : 10 puppies are still hosted at the shelter!

Puppy food is essential for them to stay healthy, and for their growth to fo smoothly. But the financial burden is huge for Isabel and the few other rescuers involved, they cannot go on that way.

2. Many rescues have also been carried out for seriously injured dogs: the association is overwhelmed by medical expenses!

Spotted in a roadside ditch, Africa suffered from a hip fracture that required a major surgery. Her convalescence is in progress in a foster family

Bella was hit by a car and suffered hip and knee injuries that required surgery. She also contracted a dangerous parasite that had to be treated

Recently found, Esperanza was frighteningly thin, and had a large wound on the top of her skull... The association took care of her, as well as the necessary medical examinations and treatments

Angel was the victim of a firecracker that exploded in his face: the lesions on his eyes were too severe to heal, both his eyes had to be removed

Estrella was in a terrible state when she was found: extremely thin and weak, she also suffered from a severed spine. Many treatments were necessary for her recovery, as well as a heavy surgery

In addition to having rescued several puppies at the same time, the association also had to come into action on various critical rescues recently, related to abuse, extreme malnutrition or road accidents for the most part.

Injured and sometimes very depleted, several dogs required urgent and expensive veterinary care. They have thus exhausted the association's budget, which cannot buy anymore puppy food!

3. If this collection fails, puppies won't receive any food

A failed collection on Animal Webaction

We can come into action, we have already booked a truck and pallets, but we have to pay it before the 13/04.

If the collection fails, we will not be able to pay, the departure of the truck will be cancelled and none of the collected kibbles will be delivered...

If the collection fails, we will refund all donors.

4. Between studies, work and rescues: Isabel and the handful of volunteers are doing everything they can, but the burden is too big!

Isabel (centre) and some of the other volunteers of the association

Launched in 2016, the association is based on a small core of volunteers: 9 in total, only 4 of whom are invested on a daily basis in the management of the shelter and the care of the dogs.

Isabel is a photographer and naval engineering student: she still goes there every day to clean, feed the dogs, heal wounds if there are any, distribute the medicines that need to be distributed, and allow these dogs to get out of their pens and have affection. Nearly 30km must be covered to get to the vet, and rescues are often made at night, requiring hours and hours of patience to search for the dogs, and to catch them.

"Everything we do is voluntary, we don't earn a cent. On the contrary, sometimes things are paid for by ourselves or with the help of our closest relatives. We all have a professional life outside the shelter, we do what we do only out of love."

5. The shelter receives only occasional help from small foreign associations. But dogs need food all year round!

The municipality only paid for the shelter's construction, and provides no subsidies to the association.  Isabel and the others fight on their own to rescue dogs and care for them on the long run.  Their efforts brought the help of three small associations, who mainly help for adoptions: Bodegueros sans chaîne (France), Corazon Animal Rescue and Friends of Animals (Netherlands). Unfortunately, all of them have limited resources and cannot cover the expenses involved in the shelter.

As of now, food is almost exclusively financed by direct donations whenever there are some, the volunteers themselves or their relatives. As time goes by, it gets harder and harder to always rely on the same people, and the network isn't big enough to cover unexpected exepenses such as the ones endured by the association right now!

6. We want to help them stay healthy, and grow properly

Milka, Nutella, and Cocoa, named after the colour of their coat, are the youngest residents of the shelter at this stage. They are still being breastfed by Mayela for the moment, who has already breastfed 5 other babies. To keep from getting weaker, Mayela also needs to eat puppy food, which is richer in nutrients.... The three puppies will soon be eating large amounts of kibble as well

Esmeralda and Manel were found last February, and have been added to the shelter's residents. They need large amounts of food to continue their growth

From a litter of 5 puppies, Masao arrived at the shelter in February. Mastin, he is about to grow a lot in only a few weeks, and already needs large quantities of food. Just like his 4 sisters Shya, Gala, Dahlia, and Irina

7. In Spain, dog is not man's best friend

An article from February 2019, reporting a 20% increase in animal abuse in Spain...

A recent study from the Spanish Nature Protection Service (Seprona) reported 10,920 offences related to injuries to domestic animals in 2018 alone.... An alarming figure which, however, is far from representing all animal abuse in the country, which most of the time goes unpunished.

Commonly used for hunting, dogs are at the centre of these abuses: beaten and barely fed, hunting dogs are thrown into the street at the slightest sign of weakness. Exhausted and abused, dogs are often too weak to survive alone in the wild.

Across Spain, several shelters exist and are struggling to offer a second chance to these dogs rejected by others...

8. What will the collected dog food be used for?

The 672 kg of puppy food will be used to feed the 10 puppies in the Huellas con Esperanza shelter, as well as Mayela who is still breastfeeding babies. They will also be used to feed any other puppy rescued by Isabel and her team in the coming weeks.
