Animal Webaction visited the site 07 June 2019 and confirms the situation described below.

In Spain, Marisa's shelter is running out of food for her 100 dogs!

Following a call for help from the association, we went to the shelter on June 7th.

The kibble stock is now complety used out.

Since April, rescues have been relentless: the shelter is full, the number of puppies has exploded.

Overwhelmed, volunteers are unable to meet the growing need for food!

Exhibits, calls for donations, fundraising... nothing seems to work.

We want to help them by sending 1440 kg of kibble as soon as possible.

If the objective is not reached, we will not be able to pay the carrier, the truck's departure will be cancelled.

100% transparency guaranteed.

1. From June 18th, the shelter will be out of kibble: the few bags left during our visit are already used out!

###
When we came to the shelter on June 7th, there were only 70 kg of kibbles left. This stock is now exhausted: the volunteers have managed to buy a few bags as an emergency, but they will only last until June 18th

###
The association has two places of reception for dogs, a single shelter is no longer sufficient to house the 100 dogs now being cared for. Our agent Anahit (centre) was accompanied for the visit by Marisa (left), President of the association, and Maria (right), a very committed volunteer.

For several weeks, the association has been struggling to buy kibble, and has been forced to move forward day by day: "We can no longer afford to buy large quantities for economic reasons," says Maria, one of the volunteers.

We went on site on June 7th, there were then less than 70 kg left in stock, which have all since been consumed by the 100 dogs hosted. "We had to buy some again, we had nothing left," Maria told us on June 14th, with a picture showing the few bags they had managed to bring back... and which will only last 4 days.

2. Since April, rescues have been relentless : the shelter is overcrowded, and can no longer cope with the growing need for food!

###
The association has had a massive influx of dogs since April. The end of the hunting season, the mating season and the arrival of summer make this time of year one of the worst for the shelter

###
Bebe is only three months old, but has already been hit by a car while wandering the streets. Injured in the leg, he was still recovering when we came.

###
Adrean was found wandering, and was taken to the shelter. The volunteers are unaware of his past, but Adrean is very fearful and he constantly stays away from the other dogs, despite his presence at the shelter for several years

###
Blanca was also brought to the shelter because she was rambling, alone on the street. At the shelter for 1.5 years, she is getting used to this other life

###
Blancito was abandoned by his owner, directly at the shelter.... Used to a family life, Blancito had only been at the shelter for 2 months when we visited

###
Freedom is only a year and a half old: he has, like many others, been found on the street and is a little afraid of what is happening to him, he has only been at the shelter for 2 months

###
Junio was abandoned by his former owners, who were no longer able to take care of all the animals in their care. Junio remains very traumatized, and cannot bear to be touched: the volunteers could not even feed him when he arrived... He needs time to be socialized, and will not be able to get by without the shelter.

###
Born at the shelter, Jane was still in her mother's womb when she arrived there: abandoned by her owners, her mum gave birth at the shelter, and the volunteers took care of all the puppies of the litter

###
Rescued while on the street, Kira is a discreet dog at the shelter, which she has only joined since April

###
Marroncito was part of a litter of 15 abandoned puppies when he was found.... Life at the shelter is what he almost always knew

###
Abandoned by her owners, Mona is 12 years old, suffering from arthritis and glaucoma. Because of the pain caused by arthritis, Mona constantly has to move around

###
Rubia was just a young puppy when she arrived at the shelter, and is now 2 years old. The life of a shelter is almost the only one she knows

Spring often marks a difficult time for the shelter: it corresponds not only to the end of the hunting season, but also to a high period of reproduction, and therefore of abandonment.

"We must gather all the dogs in need. The biggest peak of abandonments occurred in April/May, which marked the dogs' mating season," Maria explains.

More than thirty dogs were taken in in less than three months, a very large number for a shelter of this size. The need for food is constantly increasing, the shelter can no longer cope with it!

3. Dozens of puppies have been rescued in recent weeks, the shelter's costs have exploded, and volunteers are running after time

The puppies rescued by the association are sometimes only a few days old.... Extremely fragile, they need appropriate care and food, but also a lot of vigilance, a considerable burden for a handful of volunteers
Légende
The abandonments have been relentless over the last three months, it is impossible for volunteers to overlook them. They can only deal with it, hoping that the puppies will survive and can be adopted quickly

Overwhelmed by successive abandonments, often made in terrible conditions for puppies, Marisa wanted to show everyone the reality as it is. Found in the early morning, crushed between two crates, these puppies probably spent the whole night like this...

###
The shelter's supply of puppy milk: essential to ensure the survival of the smallest ones... Since April, more than 20 puppies have had to be bottle-fed by volunteers

###
Dozens of puppies are now of age to be adopted, and forced to stay at the shelter. Volunteers try to be as present as possible and help them to spend their energy: as summer approaches, adoptions drop considerably

During our visit, we met dozens of puppies : the shelter currently has 25, which represents a quarter of the total number of dogs hosted.

The volunteers had to deal with a massive influx of puppies, very difficult to manage under the circumstances "We had to bottle-feed more than 20 of them" explains Maria.

Powdered milk, medical care, constant vigilance: the costs have exploded, and puppy care has taken a very considerable amount of time for volunteers, leaving no more time for the search for food!

4. If we don't reach the target, dogs won't receive any food

A failed collection on Animal Webaction

We can come into action, we have already booked a truck and pallets, but we have to pay it before June 22nd.

If the collection fails, we will not be able to pay, the departure of the truck will be cancelled and none of the collected kibbles will be delivered...

If the collection fails, we will refund all donors.

5. Under such circumstances, the subsidy paid by the municipality is far from enough to cover the expenses

Each month, the shelter receives a municipal grant of 1000 to 1500€, an extremely precious help for the shelter, based entirely on volunteers.

Unfortunately, this assistance is not sufficient to cover the shelter's needs, let alone in the current circumstances.

At the time of our visit, 2 dogs suffered from injuries, 5 were sick, and 25 puppies were still in charge: their only care exceeds the budget allocated by the grant by far. They need our help !

6. Exhibits, appeals for donations, personal funding: volunteers do everything they can, but are helpless

Légende
Thanks to partnerships with various shops and clinics, the association has made sure to be able to collect donations at various drop-off points, in order to encourage those who cannot reach the shelter. But the donations collected remain meagre so far

33 teamers are now part of the group dedicated to the association, representing a precious but insufficient help of 33 euros per month for 100 dogs

Légende
Volunteers regularly run exhibits to collect some money from the sale of various items. Any source of funding is good to take, but costs have increased so much recently that they can no longer cope with them

The association has only a handful of volunteers, who do their best to meet the costs of hosting 100 dogs, starting with Marisa, its President.

Asking for help on social networks, physical and online fundraising, exhibits, they try to raise funds by all possible means, but have had little successso far.

"Raising funds is difficult at the moment, people are not sure how their money will be used, which is why they refuse to help most of the time."

7. In Spain, dog is not man's best friend

The two shelters of the association Protectora animal El Hocico are located in Cieza, in the south-east of Spain

An article from February 2019, reporting a 20% increase in animal abuse in Spain...

A recent study from the Spanish Nature Protection Service (Seprona) reported 10,920 offences related to injuries caused to domestic animals in 2018 alone.... An alarming figure which, however, is far from representing all animal abuse in the country, which most of the time goes unpunished.

Commonly used for hunting, dogs are at the centre of these abuses: beaten and barely fed, hunting dogs are thrown into the street at the slightest sign of weakness. Exhausted and abused, dogs are often too weak to survive alone in the wild.

Across Spain, several shelters exist and are struggling to offer a second chance to these dogs rejected by others...

8. They fight every day to give them a second chance

###
Maria and Bruno at the shelter

In a state of severe malnutrition when she was found, Ninfa was also infested with parasites: volunteers were not sure she would survive.... Ninfa recovered and was adopted in Germany. Like her, dozens of dogs are adopted and given a second chance thanks to the shelter, and to the partnerships established by Marisa with German associations

With leishmaniasis and kidney problems, Flaqui was in a precarious state when he was rescued by the association. Thanks to the care provided at the shelter, Flaqui recovered and spent two good years at the shelter, where he recently passed away

Led by Marisa, who devotes most of her life to the shelter, the association has a handful of very committed volunteers, including Maria whom we met.

If she and the others are constantly struggling to find the time and money to make the shelter go on, and to try to reconcile all their commitments, Maria sums up perfectly what allows them to move forward:

"We love them to madness. To a point that is difficult to explain. They are our babies, we may not have enough money to make ends meet, but we still have time to pet them. For us, they are our babies, we rejoice in every progress they make, especially when they arrive in terrible conditions. And when they leave, it's strange because on one side we miss them, but on the other side we're immensely happy."

9. Thanks to our logistics centre in Spain, we can take action quickly

If the collection succeeds, the food will leave directly from our logistics platform in Spain! We can therefore act very quickly, and help the 100 dogs of the association Protectora animal El Hocico to have kibbles.

10. What will the 1440 kg collected be used for ?

This collection is organized by the association Protectora Animal El Hocico. The 1440 kilos of kibbles collected will be delivered to Marisa to feed the 100 dogs cared for by the association.
