1. With 288 kittens taken in this summer, our eight associations have joined forces to feed them
Normally, each of us fights on alone, in our own corner, on a shoestring. But this summer, the wave of kittens is so overwhelming that we made one choice: to join forces. From the Dordogne to the Doubs, from the Ariège to the Vaucluse, we are eight rescues that have come together to form the Kitten Rescue Collective. The donation you make won't go to just one of us: it will be shared equally among our eight groups and their foster families, because when it comes to the plight of these kittens, we are all in the same boat...
And the situation is dire. Right now, at the height of summer, litters are arriving by the dozen: kittens just days or weeks old, born on the streets to unspayed mothers, from unwanted litters, or abandoned outside a shelter, at a vet's door, in a cardboard box by the roadside. Between the eight of us, that already adds up to 288 kittens taken in over three months!
And the most harrowing discoveries keep coming. Recently, at SOS Chats Libres, an entire litter was thrown into a cardboard box at the bottom of a garbage collection bin. Of those kittens, only one could be saved, thanks to a resident who raised the alarm; the others were already dead. This is the reality behind some of the animals we take in, right now.
2. Kittens starving, riddled with parasites, worn out: their only hope is nourishing canned food
A kitten only a few weeks old, taken from its mother, can't yet eat on its own, has a barely formed immune system, and can go downhill in a matter of hours. Right now, they reach us covered in parasites, dehydrated, undernourished, sometimes crawling with worms, sometimes anemic. The youngest, we bottle-feed every two or three hours, day and night.
And disease hits hard. Cat flu, highly contagious, wreaks havoc: runny noses, eyes so swollen that some have to be removed, kittens struggling to eat and even to breathe! On top of that come advanced cases of calicivirus, and outbreaks of panleukopenia or FIP, almost always fatal at this age.
The hardest part is that treatment counts for nothing if the kitten won't eat! The right food is often what tips things back the right way.
3. Overwhelmed by summer, we can no longer afford to buy their food
In France, it's neither the government nor local authorities that take responsibility for abandoned animals. It's small groups like ours, kept going by volunteers who give their time, their energy and, very often, their own money. That's actually something our collective painfully shares: almost none of us receives any public funding. Our only real lifeline is donations from private individuals.
And in summer, everything conspires against us. The kittens pour in, and the more of them there are, the faster disease spreads: at L'Arche de Ploum, for instance, the influx sends intensive care and hospital stays through the roof. Vet bills have become our biggest expense, the price of food keeps climbing, and at the same time donations dry up. We're also desperately short of foster homes to catch our breath: without them, we simply can't get any more kittens off the streets.
Food is always the first thing to run out. When supplies are gone, our volunteers buy the canned food out of their own pockets. But this can't go on.
4. We're not asking for money, just canned food so we can keep saving them
We're all at the same dead end: kittens to feed right now, not enough canned food, and no way to buy more. Some of us have only a few days of supplies left.
Without canned food, there's no nursing a weakened kitten back to health, no weaning the youngest, no stabilizing a sick one before treatment. It even helps us win their trust: at Association La Bleue, they see it every day, for a fearful kitten that's slow to socialize, a good bowl of food is often the first bond, the first gesture that reassures it. Everything else depends on it: whether treatment works, whether they grow, whether we can place them with a family.
Without canned food, our collective simply cannot save them. And if we can't get any, we'll be forced to halt rescues at the peak of the year: at the very moment these kittens need us most. It would be devastating, for them and for us.
5. Who we are
We are eight independent associations, spread across France, that have committed to joining forces. Each of us fights every day to take in, care for and rehome the kittens in our own area. The canned food raised through this campaign will be shared in strictly equal parts among us: one eighth of the total for each association.
