1. The shelter will soon be out of food for its 70 dogs, many are sick and will not survive it
A former hunting dog, Kisses has leishmaniasis, a parasitic disease that can be fatal. Despite treatment, Kisses' disease is difficult to control, and she remains very thin
Born on the street, Baffo was rescued with his brother Mecho when he was still a puppy. Baffo is suffering from leishmaniasis like many other dogs in the shelter, and requires life-long treatment
Having probably lived on the street all her life, Margarita had several litters there before volunteers finally caught her. Four of her puppies were also rescued. Exhausted by a life as a stray, Margarita also suffers from leishmaniasis
Abandoned because he had leishmaniasis, Bambu was in critical condition when he was rescued. Skin and bones, he also suffered from another parasitic disease and a kidney infection, and had to receive various treatments
Kimbo was only one month old when he was abandoned, and had already been abused. He has since had to have kneecap surgery, and also has leishmaniasis
Many of the dogs cared for at the shelter are particularly vulnerable, due to their age (the shelter houses about 15 puppies and seniors) or their health condition.
As in the whole country, leishmaniasis is a very present parasitic disease, which affects many of the dogs that are cared for. Incurable and sometimes fatal, it requires life-long treatment to be kept under control, but relapses are frequent and particularly increased by malnutrition.
The 70 dogs in the shelter need food, and the emergency is particularly acute for those already weakened by the disease.
2. By November 15, there will be no kibble left at the shelter
During our visit on November 1, the reserve was already very reduced.... All the remaining kibbles will be consumed by November 15
Irene is doing her best to protect all the dogs in the shelter, but the burden is extremely heavy: "I am tired and stressed all the time but I know I have to keep taking care of them" she explained to us
We were informed of the situation by a partner association that supports the shelter, and went on site on November 1st. The remaining stock of kibbles was already very low, everything will be gone by November 15.

3. Irene sacrificed everything for the shelter, and lives in very humble conditions for the dogs: she can't buy kibble
Irene has dealt with the shelter single-handedly since its very beginning, and devotes her entire life to it. On site 365 days a year, she also lives at the shelter with the dogs in a complete minimalism
Pallets, metal sheets or other salvage materials, Irene makes sure to arrange the shelter as best she can to ensure comfort and safety for the dogs she rescues
The most fragile dogs are kept inside, as far as space allows, in order to be protected as much as possible
For more than 8 years, Irene has been dealing with the shelter single-handedly, both for the care of the dogs and for the development of the facilities. If the project originally involved several people, Irene is the only one who resisted the difficulties, and she continues to face them today for the good of the dogs.
She now lives at the shelter, with the dogs and in minimal comfort, and also spends most of her days there: "I am here 365 days a year, and I do everything for these dogs," she says.
Without time or resources, it is impossible for her to buy kibbles!
4. Collections in supermarkets, partnerships, calls for donations.... Irene is doing her best to get help, but it's not enough
On several occasions, Irene has already found herself without kibbles to feed the animals, and lives in fear that she will not be able to continue
Irene also organizes physical collections in supermarkets, as well as solidarity events to raise funds and food. But as she is alone, it takes her a lot of time and physically exhausts her, she can't get out of it
Far from being discouraged, Irene takes many actions to get help and feed the dogs. She goes to supermarkets to collect food, looks for partners to raise funds, and also sends SOS on social networks.
But the pace it demands is exhausting, and does not meet the shelter's needs. Worse still, it affects her health, and Irene has to face important back problems that accentuate the difficulties on a daily basis...
5. The town hall refuses to help the shelter, the association that supports it from the Netherlands has already done everything possible, and begs us to intervene
The town hall does not pay any subsidy for Irene's shelter. It is actually Irene who has to send a substantial amount of money every month to pay for the municipal land occupied by the dogs...
From the Netherlands, the ARPA Nederland association is doing its utmost to support Irene, but its resources and means are limited
On the spot, Irene receives no help or subsidies whatsoever, and must also pay a substantial rent to the town hall each month for the land occupied by the shelter.
Irene can therefore only count on the support of the Dutch-based ARPA Nederland association, which is fighting to keep the shelter going day after day.
"Irene is deperate for food for her animals" said Claudia, a member of the association, when she contacted us. If they managed to handle the emergency this summer, they cannot cope with this new crisis, and ask us to help out.
6. If we don't reach the target, dogs won't receive any food

We can take action, we have already booked a truck and pallets, but we have to pay it before November 11.
If the collection fails, we will not be able to pay, the departure of the truck will be cancelled and none of the collected kibbles will be delivered...
If the collection fails, we will refund all donors.
7. Due to lack of resources, Irene cannot rescue all the dogs in distress she gets called for
Kombucha and Biterkas are among the last dogs rescued by Irene, who could not take care of all the puppies in the litter

If the shelter now hosts 70 dogs, it could shelter more and has already done so in the past. But the lack of resources and the risk it poses to animals is now a barrier for Irene.

8. We have met them during our visit, and we want to help them

Abandoned at the shelter when he was only a few months old with his brother Aquiles, Donut is totally deaf, but manages to cope at the shelter
Selva, emaciated, wandering and aggressive when she was found, was desperately looking for food
Fany is an abandoned former sheepdog, who needs Irene to be vigilant at the shelter so as not to be bullied by some dominant dogs
Arrived at the shelter this summer, Georgio was found wandering in a nearby village. He is very nervous at the shelter and must be separated from most of the other dogs
Rany arrived at the shelter as a baby, and was adopted twice, but has been plagued by bad luck and is back at the shelter
Abused by his former owner and kept tied up, Robe remains fearful and must be isolated
9. Irene gives everything for the good of the animals
Irene rescued her first stray dog at the age of 10, and has not stopped since then. She now runs the shelter through thick and thin, despite the sacrifices involved: "I do it all myself, I've lost all my friends, family, etc. taking care of the dogs." she explained.
Driven by a very deep love of animals, she does not count her hours or energy to bring them the best, but is under great pressure, both physically and morally.
"I would like to say thanks to those who will be reading this appeal" she told us.
10. In Spain, dog is not man's best friend
Irene's shelter is located in the southwest of Spain
An article from February 2019, reporting a 20% increase in animal abuse in Spain...
A recent study from the Spanish Nature Protection Service (Seprona) reported 10,920 offences related to injuries caused to domestic animals in 2018 alone.... An alarming figure which, however, is far from representing all animal abuse in the country, which most of the time goes unpunished.
Commonly used for hunting, dogs are at the centre of these abuses: beaten and barely fed, hunting dogs are thrown into the street at the slightest sign of weakness. Exhausted and abused, dogs are often too weak to survive alone in the wild.
Across Spain, several shelters exist and are struggling to offer a second chance to these dogs rejected by others..
11. Thanks to our logistics centre in Spain, we can take action quickly
If the collection succeeds, the food will leave directly from our logistics centre in Spain! So we can act very quickly, and help the 70 dogs at Irene's shelter to get kibble.
12. What will the 1440 kg collected be used for ?
This collection is organised by the ARPA Nederland association, for the benefit of Irene's shelter. The 1440 kg of kibbles collected will be delivered to Irene to feed the 70 dogs in the shelter.
