1. In Serbia, Sladja is running out of kibble for the 132 dogs in her shelter. They might starve if no one intervenes!

%%%

"We have 132 dogs at the shelter now, and we are barely managing to collect enough to feed them every single month. I’m feeling exhausted, always chasing for food and supplies for dogs. I am old, I'm in charge of everything, I only have one volunteer helping me with this large number of dogs.

We don't have much food left at this stage, enough to cover the next 10 days at most. Our funds are empty, hunger leads to aggressive behavior and brings illnesses and injuries. The health condition of the ones who are the most in distress would deteriorate quickly without food, and all the dogs would be nervous and hurt each other.

It would be extremely painful for me to be in that situation and watch something like that. It would be like watching your kids starve."

2. Street dogs are threatened by hunger and dogcatchers, as their number keeps rising. Sladja is their only hope on the spot, but she can't help them without kibble.

###

"The number of street dogs is increasing, we have around 150 street dogs at this moment. We cannot feed them all, we provide as much as we can for around 30 of them with food and water although it isn't enough, and made an agreement with a local restaurant to give their leftovers to part of the others, near Silver lake, but that's it.

I am sad because people are leaving little defenseless dogs on the street and in front of our shelter. We help as much as we can but we give advantage in rescue to endangered dogs and little puppies. I fear a large increase in the number of street dogs again due to summer, and hope to be able to rescue more of them. We managed to have 13 dogs adopted lately, we now have more space for other dogs who need our help, but without food we simply cannot take them in.

The problem is also related to the dog catchers, who are cruel to animals, and risk to take them in instead if I cannot care for them..."

3. Left on the street as a puppy, Beta was rescued by Sladja. Weakened by a tumour, she needs kibble to get through her operation and its aftermath.

###

"I found Beta on the streets, while she was still just a puppy. She had been left alone to fend for herself, which was impossible.

Beta is supposed to have surgery in a couple of days, to remove a tumor on her leg. It is possible that the tumor is malignant, we'll only be able to know for sure after the surgery and some tests... Beta absolutly needs to be able to eat well to go through this and through any possible treatment she'll have to follow afterwards."

4. No subsidies, few donations... Sladja has to manage everything on her own, with her retirement pension as her only source of funding. She can no longer buy kibble.

###

"My retirement funds are the main source of money to fund the shelter,  and some small amounts of donations, I only have very few sponsors. We receive no support from the municipality unfortunately, and locals are coming only to give us their dogs or to leave them in front of our shelter, not to help us.

There hasn't been any positive change lately in regards to funding, and I do not expect any additional help in the upcoming months.

I’m old and sick, if I don't get anymore support, Dogcatchers will come back with their cruel way of catching dogs with wires and then transporting them 350 km away in dirty cages to starve and fight."

5. Sladja is not asking for money, only kibble to prevent the dogs from starving.

###

"I started alone in 2010 by feeding dogs on the street. I then rented a land from the municipality in 2013 and founded an association “PUZ” . It started with 13 dogs and 6 cages, now after 10 long years of dedicated work the shelter has a capacity for 160 dogs. It makes a huge difference, I fought my way with the cruel dogcatchers here, for now my city is free of their tyranny and adoptions have increased recently.

We care for these dogs, give them food, water, make them trust us and reveal themselves. We love them, take care of every need for them from food to vaccines, sterilization etc... They are happy at the shelter.

I am getting old, and some day this shelter will be taken by my volunteer Sasa, but I fear the shelter will be forgotten, and I hope that younger generations will see the beauty and fell in love with these wonderful creatures as I did."
