Animal Webaction visited the site 16 October 2021 and confirms the situation described below.

1. In Romania, Maria and Ferenc are running out of kibble to feed the 390 dogs in their shelter. They will starve if no one intervenes!

%%%

"Far too many dogs are thin because we can't give them enough kibble... If we go on like this, they will lose even more weight, risk developing health problems, serious injuries if they start fighting. Today we only have 12 bags of kibble left, we will only last a few days...

We need this kibble harvest to succeed, it is vital for the dogs! With winter coming, they will certainly suffer even more on an empty stomach. The aim of the shelter is to try and give them a better life than the one they had on the streets or when they were abandoned, not for them to starve to death!"

2. There have never been so many dogs in the shelter: without kibble, fights will break out!

###

"We are really worried because the number of dogs has increased dramatically in a very short time, so we have had to ration the kibble. Unfortunately, there is the possibility that the dogs will become aggressive when they are hungry, and as there are kennels with more than 2 dogs, we fear they will fight each other!

There are still many dogs on the streets that we refuse to take in due to lack of funds, but those we have taken in recently would not have survived without our help...

We live with the constant stress of not being able to feed the dogs. The pandemic has made everything worse: more dogs, fewer donations and fewer volunteers. It's getting harder and harder to cope. We spend 24 hours a day, 7 days a week running the shelter... We need this kibble drive to succeed because we don't want to see dogs tearing themselves apart to eat a few kibbles..."

3. Inna is so skinny that she will not survive her recent surgery without kibble!

###

"Inna was found on the side of a busy road. After a few days in the shelter, we noticed that her hind leg was more and more swollen... She had a cancerous tumour, the vet had to operate on her 5 days ago! Her leg was amputated...She has to take antibiotics, pain medication and has to be cleaned twice a day so that the scarring doesn't get infected.

We usually keep her inside since the operation, and take her out a few times a day to relieve herself. She is so calm, very patient and affectionate. As she is still recovering from the operation, she needs proper nutrition and care to recover and not develop other more serious health problems..."

4. Debts are piling up and donations are at their lowest. Maria and Ferenc have no money to buy kibble.

###

"We are very much in debt to the vet, the kibble supplier and a building company. For the next few months, it's going to get harder and harder as winter comes: we're going to have to make sure that the gravel in the kennels is dry, that the dogs have blankets in the kennels, and that they get enough to eat...

Our strategy of collecting dog food in supermarket car parks is no longer working... Donations have not increased while the number of dogs is soaring!  Honestly, for the number of dogs we have, it's not enough. It stopped being enough before the pandemic started.

All the associations are competing for attention online, and we are all in a bad situation. Too many dogs, and not enough funds. All the private shelters in this part of the country are at capacity!"

5. Maria and Ferenc are not asking for money, only kibble to prevent the dogs from starving.

###

"Our life is dedicated to the shelter, we don't go out, we don't go on holiday, we are here constantly, from morning to night. Feeding, cleaning and caring for the dogs is our reason for living! We are constantly worried about not being able to feed our dogs properly, that is our biggest problem.

Unfortunately, this lifestyle has had an impact on my husband's health and he has just had an operation... The stress is not good for him and I hope it doesn't affect him further. I pray for him every day! We are afraid that the situation with stray dogs is taking too long to change in Romania, and that this pandemic will affect us even more.

According to Romanian law, any dog that does not have a pedigree or breeding right issued by the National Canine Association must be spayed or neutered. But people don't respect this law and the police don't give fines, I think that's why we end up with so many dogs... And so many debts.  The public administration must get more involved!"

6. If this campaign succeeds, Maria and Ferenc will not receive any money but 3000 kg of kibble, delivered from Animal Webaction's logistics platform in Romania.

Animal Webaction has a logistics platform in Romania which enables us to intervene quickly and deliver kibble.

7. Calls for donations and in-store collections are not enough anymore for Maria and Ferenc to get by. The partner associations are doing their best to help, but the needs of the shelter are too great, they need this campaign to succeed!

"Our situation is difficult: there are only two of us and we have almost 400 dogs. No one around us sees the point of donating to us, or of volunteering at the shelter. Sometimes we feel like we are fighting in vain... Fortunately we are supported by the French association "Only for them", which is really involved. They have helped us with the funding of several kennels, sent us blankets, try to help us as much as they can with adoptions and food, but it is a young and small association, their means are limited. We also benefit from the help of the association "Coeur d'Asha" when they can, but they already have their own shelter to manage, their capacity of support is limited.

On top of that, the sterilisation campaign launched by the town hall is not going well: people don't even want to take their dogs to be sterilised for free! The town hall has allocated a lot of money to this project, but people are not interested...

We need help to feed these dogs and to continue to help those who are left on the streets. It is important that people support us because this is a social issue that impacts our whole community!"

8. Campaigns launched on Animal Webaction often fail.

When a campaign fails, Animal Webaction cannot deliver the products. The beneficiary doesn't receive anything and the buyers are refunded.

9. In Romania, it is difficult to find funds for kibble, there are no grants, no foundations... Many abandoned dogs die alone in the streets, in complete indifference...
