Animal Webaction visited the site 11 December 2021 and confirms the situation described below.

1. In Bosnia, Svjetlana will soon run out of kibble to feed the 139 dogs in her shelter. They will starve if no one helps!

"The good news lately is that we have finally been able to resume our adoptions to the Netherlands, we managed to send 20 dogs in the last few months. Our shelter is now back at its "normal capacity" but newly abandonned dogs are always more numerous, so I doubt we'll remain like this for long.

Despite our seemingly lower number of dogs, procurement of food for 139 mouths is still huge and it's what we struggle with the most. Dogs are currently being fed cheap kibble and old bread. It’s the middle of December, it's already very cold outside and temperatures will continue to decrease in the months to come, they can go as low as -20° in January and February...

We need to be able to restock on food for the dogs to remain warm and face the hardest time of year. This campaign is our only chance to achieve that. If this doesn't succeed, I will be forced to ration meals and we can expect only the worst thing to happen from there..."

2. Poor quality food already threatens the health of the most fragile, they will not be able to endure deprivation

###

"The shelter is home to many dogs that are elderly and/or have medical conditions. We do our best to feed them, but despite our efforts, our current lack of resources prevents us from giving them the best. Right now, they are not eating well; the mix of cheap kibble & old bread we give them does not suit them.

Many are stagnating in their recovery, they are more likely to get sick or worse, die... It is very frustrating to watch, it makes me terribly sad. I have dedicated my whole life to this shelter, I am getting older, my health is not great, but my only hope is to find kibble for my dogs this winter... This is by far the most important thing for them..."

3. Hit by a car, Gabi is recovering badly from her leg injury and suffers from nervous disorders. Still fragile, he will not survive the winter without kibble!

###

"Gabi is a 2-year-old female, we found her on the street with a broken leg, we believe she got into a car accident. Unfortunately her leg hasn't fully recovered and he has psychic issues, she's biting her legs and tail all the time, which is why we put this protective collar on her.

Gabi is not accepted in the pack and she’s not able to move very well. It's imperative that she eats good quality food in enough quantities for her disease and overall health not to deteriorate any further."

4. Minimal subsidies, rare donations, huge debts... Svjetlana can no longer buy kibble for the dogs!

###

"Our usual food supplier won't allow us to buy from their store anymore because we have a 2400 euro debt we haven't been able to pay off... Our debt at the vet's is even bigger, we have to buy medications but we don’t have the resources.

We receive a subsidy from the municipality, but they are finding every reason possible to lower their aid... We have a long term collaboration with a Dutch organisation, they send us monthly donations but as our shelter expanded over the years, we have more expenses and the money we receive is no longer enough.

The lack of funding is a big problem, I have debts all over, for vet bills, electricity, fuel... There is enough food on the market, but we don't have the funds to buy it..."

5. Svjetlana isn't asking for money, only kibble to prevent the dogs from starving.

###

"Here in Bosnia, it's sad to say but people don't care about dogs, not even their own. If they have a dog they can no longer take care of, they just let them on the street, or in worse cases, poison them. For some people; it’s easier to kill a dog than to bring him to our shelter...

I've personally never understood this lack of compassion; this shelter is my biggest accomplishment in life because of the good  it's been able to do for these animals. I’m proud of what we've managed to achieve in the past 17 years and I’m even prouder to say more than 1000 dogs have been adopted thanks to our organisation.

I'm unfortunately not getting younger and I fear for the future of my shelter - who will continue caring for the dogs when I'm gone? I can only hope that someone will give them as much love and care as I do..."

6. If this campaign succeeds, Svjetlana will not receive any money but 1920 kg of kibble, delivered from Animal Webaction's logistic platform in Bosnia.

Animal Webaction has a logistic platform in Bosnia which allows us to intervene quickly and deliver kibbles.

7. Svjetlana tries to seek help by all means, without much success. This campaign is her last hope to feed the dogs!

"Despite my old age and my lack of knowledge when it comes to computers, I always try to publish posts on social media to alert people of our situation and ask them for donations. Unfortunately it's not efficient, no one really responds to my calls and individual donations are very rare.

Our economy is in bad shape, the pandemic has caused inflation, some people don't even have money to buy their own food so it isn't surrising they aren't able to help us. There is no Bosnian organisation that can help with our food issue either.

It’s hard to work alone and without enough support, no one is willing to listen to the problems of one old woman and her dogs... We need this campaign to work because it's our only option!"

8. Campaigns launched on Animal Webaction often fail.
