We cannot let the street dogs under Danijela’s care and those at her shelter starve!

Disaster! In Serbia, Danijela is nearly out of kibble to feed the dogs at her shelter and those she cares for in the streets: they are going to starve!

Animal Webaction visited the site 13 January 2024 and confirms the situation described below.

1. In Serbia, Danijela is almost out of kibble to feed the dozens of dogs she cares for in her shelter and on the street. They will starve to death if no one intervenes!

%%%

"My kibble reserves are at an all-time low and I've barely got enough to last a few more days. This situation means I have to ration every portion, while dozens of dogs are counting on me at the shelter and on the streets! The rations are meagre, and I know it's not enough. The dogs don't get the quantity they need, they go hungry. Worse still, the quality of the kibble is very poor, which leads to a rapid deterioration in their health...

The dogs in the shelter are losing weight and vigour. Outside, stray dogs suffer the same fate, except that they too have to survive the freezing temperatures of winter... They are even more vulnerable. They get weaker every day and fall ill.

This shortage is paralysing me: I can't even think about taking in new dogs, knowing that the ones I'm already feeding are fighting for their lives! The last bags of kibble continue to be emptied, quickly, too quickly... This campaign is my only chance of continuing to feed the dogs and saving them from a tragic fate!"

2. Danijela fears a rise in aggression and tension among the dogs: not all of them will survive a prolonged kibble shortage!

###

"I'm faced with a difficult reality for the dogs in my shelter and the street dogs in my care. If I don't find some kibble quickly, they risk losing more weight and becoming even more vulnerable to disease. I've already noticed that some of them are becoming more anxious and fearful, a direct consequence of their hunger...

This tense situation also increases the risk of conflict between the dogs. At the shelter, tensions are running high, and in the streets, the fight for survival could lead them to form packs, increasing the danger of fights. Worse still, in their search for food, they could venture onto dangerous roads or into high-risk areas. The thought of them rummaging through rubbish, risking poisoning, is unbearable!

I feel overwhelmed and powerless in the face of these eventualities. Not being able to provide for them is a constant source of anxiety for me. All I want is for the dogs to get through the winter in acceptable conditions and, above all, with full bellies!"

3. Donations, sponsorships and adoptions are at an all-time low: despite her best efforts, Danijela cannot solve the kibble crisis!

###

"Donors, preoccupied by their own economic difficulties, are becoming increasingly rare. My appeals on social networks are no longer getting any response. Even attempts to set up sponsorships for dogs have met with little interest.

Adoptions are also rare, despite my constant efforts to prepare the dogs properly. My approaches to the local authorities for support have come up against walls of indifference, and companies approached for partnerships have declined, choosing to support other causes. The foreign associations that support me from time to time are also faced with a lack of donations, limiting their aid.

This situation is exacerbated by the increase in the price of kibble, making it increasingly difficult to buy kibble... My own resources, already stretched, are not enough. I feel discouraged... Every day is a struggle and every meal for my dogs is a luxury!"

4. Danijela isn't asking for money, only kibble to prevent the dogs from starving.

###

"The lack of kibble is seriously disrupting my daily life. Every day, the incessant search for kibble is the absolute priority, relegating all the association's other activities to second place! It's becoming impossible to welcome new dogs, and the care we provide, which is focused on the dogs' comfort and recovery, is also becoming less effective due to the lack of adequate food.

My ability to interact and establish lasting bonds of trust with the dogs is also impacted, as all my time is taken up by the constant quest for kibble. Yet these moments are essential, not only for the dogs' well-being but also to prepare them for a future life in a loving home!

The availability of kibble is the central pillar of my mission. Without it, everything seems to fall apart: the intake of new dogs, the ongoing care of those already in my care, and the possibility of building a better future for these vulnerable creatures. I feel like I'm fighting in a vacuum... Without outside help to make up for this shortfall, the survival of the dogs and the continuity of my actions on their behalf look more than uncertain."

5. Driven by an unconditional love for animals, Danijela finds the strength to continue her fight, despite the difficulties and isolation.

###

"Animal protection is a constant battle. This fight, which is often invisible to others, is gradually separating me from social life, because I devote my whole life to improving the lives of neglected, mistreated and abandoned dogs. This choice of life, marked by isolation, is a burden that I accept, because the well-being of these animals is my absolute priority.

However, this task is far from simple. Faced with the prejudices about abandoned dogs and the cases of mistreatment that I come across, my heart fills with deep sadness. These difficult realities test my strength and resilience on a daily basis. The pain and fear I see in these dogs' eyes strengthens my commitment, despite the emotional toll it takes.

My unconditional love for these animals guides me through these trying times. Each challenge, each obstacle, strengthens my determination to continue this fight. This mission, full of difficulties and sacrifices, reflects my deep commitment to these sensitive and loving beings. I sometimes feel overwhelmed, but I will never stop fighting for them!"

8. In Serbia, street dogs are hunted by the State and ignored by the population, volunteers like Danijela are their only hope.
