Animal Webaction visited the site 28 October 2024 and confirms the situation described below.
"We have 134 dogs in our shelter, and this number is constantly growing. Why? Because too many people overlook the importance of spaying and neutering their pets. As a result, we face a constant influx of abandoned puppies—puppies no one wants or cares for. We bear the burden of others' negligence alone...
Our financial situation is critical. We are so deeply in debt that our supplier has stopped deliveries, demanding repayment... To feed our dogs, we’re stretching the last of our kibble by mixing it with stale bread. But winter is coming, and this makeshift solution won’t hold. We are overwhelmed and desperately under-resourced...
I feel frustrated but, more than anything, profoundly worried. Our debt has reached an all-time high, and the cold is upon us. Without urgent kibble supplies, our dogs' lives are at serious risk."
"Many of our dogs are elderly; some are battling cancer. For them, nutritious food isn’t just important—it’s vital! But recently, they’ve started losing weight due to the stale bread and poor-quality kibble we give them. It breaks my heart, but we can only give what we have, and right now, it’s not enough...
Our vulnerable dogs need special care and quality food to make it through the winter. I feel torn, caught between two critical needs: medical care and food. Without one or the other, they’re in real danger: they’ll fall ill, or they’ll starve...
I don’t know what to do. These dogs mean everything to me—I can’t just turn them out; they wouldn’t survive a day on the streets! I feel completely overwhelmed and desperate. Losing my dogs to a lack of kibble would be a heartache I couldn’t bear."
"Toska is old and very frail... She’s been with us since she was young and will stay here until the end. Despite all our efforts, she was never adopted. This is the reality of our work: not all stories end in a warm home; for many, this shelter is all they’ll ever know...
Without kibble, Toska won’t survive the winter—that’s a certainty. She’s the oldest dog here, so she’s also the most fragile! We must ensure she lacks nothing, starting with a full belly."
"Financially, our situation has never been this precarious. Prices have skyrocketed—kibble now costs four times as much as before! Our debts are staggering. We owe money for kibble, veterinary care, vehicle repairs… over 5,000 euros in total. It’s overwhelming for us. Donations trickle in, but it’s far from enough...
We need kibble, medical care, and a way out of this cycle of debt! Yet every day, it feels like we’re sinking a little deeper. Adoptions are almost non-existent—only two so far this year.
I can’t keep going alone. But whenever I ask for help, I hear the same response: ‘There are hungry children in the world, in Bosnia...’ And while I understand that point, I wonder—is it a genuine concern or just an excuse to turn a blind eye? Meanwhile, we are at our breaking point, and our dogs need a helping hand now more than ever."
"My passion for this work is as strong as the day I started, years ago. Knowing I’ve helped these dogs, given some a chance at a better life, brings me true happiness and a sense of fulfillment. It’s an ongoing struggle, but I hold on. Yet, as I get older, I wonder how much longer I can keep going; this work is exhausting. We are the only ones here looking out for abandoned dogs...
In our region, there are far more people who prefer not to see stray dogs than those willing to lend a hand. And as for the authorities, they turn a blind eye, hoping the problem will resolve itself. People don’t realize: without us, there would be even more dogs on the streets. What will happen when we can no longer continue this work? Neither the community nor local authorities seem to grasp the full impact that would have."
