Animal Webaction visited the site 01 November 2024 and confirms the situation described below.
"Donations have dropped dramatically, we’re barely receiving anything. Our situation is very difficult: we’re in desperate need of kibble, and a severe tick infestation has hit the shelter. I've lost around twenty dogs... It was a real blow for me, heartbreaking.
I only have 80 kilos of kibble left, just enough for a day. For 10 days now, I’ve been rationing portions. The dogs are no longer getting enough to eat, and it shows: they’re losing weight, in bad moods, with skin issues, diarrhea, and dental problems. Everything is deteriorating very quickly... too quickly.
I’m living in constant stress. There are no more donations, virtually no kibble, and suppliers refuse to deliver without payment. This is why we have to make this campaign succeed — we have no other option! I feel helpless, lost, and very afraid for my dogs."
"Without kibble, there’s no life here. It’s like for a human: without food, there’s no chance of survival. It’s a hard reality to face, but that’s the fate we’ll be facing if I can’t find food for my animals soon...
The worst part of it all is my helplessness in the face of this looming catastrophe: against the diseases that may spread, against the fights that might break out… I have nightmares about it — it terrifies me. I don’t want to lose more dogs!
This kibble campaign is essential. It’s about my dogs’ health, their well-being, peace among them… simply, their lives."
"We took Rick in after receiving a report: he’d been hit by a car, with bone piercing through his skin. One of his legs had to be amputated, and the other frequently gets infected. He’s on a heavy antibiotic regimen that he can only tolerate if he’s well-fed.
Rick is fragile, for life. There’s no going back for him, no way to release him onto the street. His survival depends entirely on our shelter and our ability to feed him. Without kibble, it’s the end for him."
"For 14 years, I’ve fought to meet the needs of the shelter. I take on odd jobs, sell my belongings, do everything I can to raise the funds we need. But today, I’m at my breaking point: my health is failing, and I’m constantly back and forth between the shelter and the hospital. Working five or six jobs at once is just no longer possible.
Donations have dried up. People are tired of giving, constantly called upon for urgent causes — natural disasters, wars... They have to rank suffering, and often, other causes seem more ‘desperate’ than ours. I understand, but for us, it’s devastating.
With the decline in donations and my reduced ability to work, I’m drowning in debt: vet bills, rent, employees, suppliers... I’m behind everywhere. It’s an immense weight, physically and mentally. I don’t even have the words to describe how heavy it feels. And it’s a vicious circle: the more problems I have at the shelter, the more my health suffers, and the sicker I am, the more the shelter suffers. You know, a hamster spinning in its wheel? That’s me."
"I love what I do, and I love animals deeply. It’s a true passion, a calling. But defending them in Morocco is a daily struggle! Many people here don’t understand what it really means to have a pet. They fall for a cute puppy, but as soon as responsibilities come, they abandon it… There’s still so much progress to be made.
And the challenges are huge. Rabies, for instance, is a serious problem here. It’s so bad that even the U.S. has closed its borders to us! We used to send many animals there for adoption. Since then, it’s all stopped...
Despite it all, I keep going. Because if I don’t care for these animals who are abandoned left and right, who will? I know I can’t change the world. But every life saved is a step in the right direction. And the gratitude I see in the dogs’ eyes… that’s priceless. It’s what gives me the strength to continue."
