"We feed around a hundred street cats in Marrakech. Unfortunately, we face a lot of daily challenges in our efforts: stolen food bowls, broken water dishes… Logistically, it’s really tough. But the hardest part is finding enough food for all these hungry mouths!
Right now, we’re completely out of kibble—or at least, not enough to sustain the link between the shelter and the street feeding rounds. So, we’ve had to stop feeding the street cats. It’s already been a week. To make matters worse, there’s been a major spike in cases of feline calicivirus (cat flu) recently.
And we all know how this goes: the less the cats eat, the weaker their immune systems get, and the more likely they are to catch the virus… It’s a vicious cycle! We desperately need kibble. Not just to feed the cats, but to prevent an epidemic that could cause even more devastation. The countdown has begun."
"We’ve carried out a lot of rescues recently. Even when we say we can’t take in more cats, people keep bringing them to us. And me, when I see an animal in distress, I just can’t turn my back. So, we take them in, try to nurse them back to health, but it’s becoming nearly impossible.
Sick cats bring additional expenses. Over the past few weeks, we’ve had to perform several eye removals and treat severe cases of feline calicivirus. Each surgery is costly, not to mention the antibiotics, bandages, antiseptics, anesthetics... We just can’t keep up.
And more cats mean more food. It’s already been two weeks since I started rationing portions at the shelter, and now I’ve emptied the last bag of kibble! Even the wet food is gone… The cats aren’t eating enough, they’re getting sick, and fights are breaking out. I have to find a solution. In ten years of running this shelter, we’ve never faced anything like this."
"Max is a 2-year-old male we rescued from the streets just a few days ago. His condition is critical: he has ear cancer and skin cancer… a double battle he now has to fight.
His treatment is about to begin, but the road ahead is long and uncertain. All we hope for is that the cancer doesn’t spread further.
To have any chance of survival, Max needs to regain his strength. Kibble is vital for him to get back on his feet and face this fight."
"We have no regular funding. The only exception is Teaming, which brings in €165 a month. A drop in the ocean when there are already more than 350 animals in the shelter's care, not counting those on the streets... And it’s not just cats—we also have dogs, equines… Managing this is impossible.
When I opened the shelter ten years ago, my hotel business allowed me to fund everything. But since COVID and the collapse of tourism, everything has fallen apart. We’ve never been able to recover. Today, to cover the animals’ needs, I take on debt: with suppliers, friends, family. It’s become our only “financial plan,” but it can’t go on.
I’ve had to cut back on everything: staff, sterilizations, medical interventions, rescues… even basic necessities. The debts, between food and vet care, are astronomical! If this continues, I’ll have no choice but to shut the shelter down—or release the healthy animals and keep only the sick ones. It’s unbearable. We can’t go on like this!"
"It’s the suffering of animals that drove me to get involved, to create my association, my shelter. Plain and simple. Over these ten years, I’m convinced we’ve helped reduce the number of stray cats in Marrakech, and I’m proud of that. Truly. The shelter is spacious, well-maintained, and offers the animals a comfortable environment. Disabled cats, for example, can live out their days in a calm, secure place. That’s something I’m really satisfied with.
But we want to do so much more. More street sterilizations, in Marrakech and beyond, to reduce births in the long term. At the shelter, we dream of building new quarantine areas for sick cats, blind cats, even dogs. But without resources, all of this remains just plans—or dreams…
The animals need me, and it’s for them that I keep going. But how much longer I can hold on, I really don’t know."
