Animal Webaction visited the site 30 April 2025 and confirms the situation described below.
“I’m currently caring for around 600 cats in Essaouira and the surrounding neighborhoods, with the help of local sponsors and supporters. The number of cats needing food is enormous, and the demand for kibble keeps growing, but sadly, donations are becoming scarcer and scarcer…
I dip into my own reserves to buy a few bags of kibble here and there, but it’s never enough, and my resources aren’t unlimited. For several months now, I’ve been forced to buy low-quality kibble, just in tiny amounts! The street cats are eating less and less.
Sometimes we give them leftover chicken or offal when possible. But often, they have no choice but to scavenge through trash bins… Their situation is extremely precarious, just like their harsh life on the streets. I feel disheartened. I fight every day to manage to feed the street cats and the ones in my shelter, but handling all this on my own is becoming impossible!”
“Right now, my shelter houses 400 cats, most of them injured, blind, sick, or abandoned. Just this morning, I took in three more abandoned cats; a few days ago, it was seven more… It never stops. My shelter is completely overwhelmed!
With so many cats in my care, you could say I’m running the equivalent of an SPCA-type shelter. But the huge difference is that I have no large organization, no team of volunteers, no funding behind me! It’s heartbreaking, but I receive absolutely no donations for kibble… And on top of that, prices have gone up! I’ve had to settle for lower-quality kibble, which unfortunately isn’t good for the cats’ health.
Every day, I live in constant anxiety for the cats in my shelter… They are far too fragile to withstand a kibble shortage. This campaign is truly a breath of fresh air for me, and for my cats, it’s simply a matter of survival.”
“Pluton is a young cat, about a year old. A local sponsor pointed him out to me because he was wandering the streets with a severe case of cat flu. I immediately brought him into the shelter. Since his arrival, his flu has greatly improved, but now another issue has appeared: he’s suffering from a skin problem, very likely a flea allergy…
If he could benefit from high-quality food, his recovery would be much quicker. But sadly, I don’t have the means to offer him better nutrition! And there’s something people must understand: feeding a cat without treating it is pointless. But the reverse is just as true — if you treat a cat but don’t feed it properly, the treatment won’t work, and the cat will end up deteriorating… One cannot replace the other!
The success of this campaign is vital for Pluton to regain his strength and have a chance at healing.”
“The situation isn’t great even in Europe, that’s for sure. But here in Morocco, it’s far worse: there are absolutely no state-run animal protection services. I act as an entire animal clinic, without any external help — not from private individuals, not from the government. Today, I’m caring for 400 cats and 35 dogs at the shelter, and about 600 stray cats on the streets. It’s enormous, adoptions are almost non-existent, and the vet bills just keep piling up…
The donations we receive barely cover 25% of our needs; I finance the rest myself. But my reserves are depleted — no more savings, nothing left! And next year, when I retire, my income will be cut in half… I’m exhausted, I handle everything myself, and when I don’t have time to post appeals, the donations stop immediately…
Without additional help, my shelter and the hundreds of animals we care for on the streets won’t survive. It’s an immediate, very real threat hanging over us…”
“The shelter came about almost naturally: the overwhelming animal misery here eventually made its way into my home… I live surrounded by my cats, watching over them day after day, 24/7. My entire daily routine revolves around their needs: first thing in the morning, I check who has died, who has disappeared, who has gotten even sicker… It’s incredibly draining. I’m alone in managing everything, and every day I rush around: caring for the cats, organizing the rounds, facing emergencies over and over.
And I’m constantly chasing money and donations to keep going. Sometimes I get occasional help, but it never lasts. I don’t have a solid support network, so donations are literally vital. Don’t be mistaken: every euro counts. Even someone who gives me one euro a month, I thank them warmly. There’s no such thing as a ‘small donation’: every gesture matters.
If I had 1,000 people each giving one euro a month, maybe my shelter could be saved. One euro isn’t even the price of a baguette… What matters isn’t the amount — it’s the act. It’s the power of the collective, the sum of all the small donations, that can change everything.”
