1. In Bosnia, Svjetlana is almost out of kibble to feed the 130 dogs in her shelter. They will starve if no one steps in to help!

%%%

“We do everything we can to feed the dogs, but their meals are anything but regular: one day it’s bread soaked in lard, the next day table scraps, and only occasionally real kibble. Both the quantity and the quality are nowhere near what they should be—especially for our seniors, whose health is already failing. One tiny setback can topple this fragile balance.

We’ve just come through a kennel-cough outbreak, and several dogs are still struggling to recover. It’s maddening: after all these years running the shelter, we’re still fighting just to secure the bare minimum!

I’ve tried everything, even asking nearby restaurants for their leftover food, but they refuse and padlock their dumpsters… It’s as if they’d rather let perfectly good food rot than see it feed a living creature in need. It shows how inhuman we’ve become. I’m terrified this campaign might fail—it could spell the end of the shelter, plain and simple.”

2. Kennel cough has hit the frailest dogs hard... The looming shortage of kibble could prove fatal for them.

###

“Our shelter houses a lot of senior dogs. Their loyalty hasn’t aged a day, but their immune systems certainly have. We do everything possible to keep their health from deteriorating, yet we can’t always succeed—the recent kennel-cough spike proves that.

Financially, it crushed us: with so little money, we had to decide which dogs would get urgent care and which would have to wait. In a situation already stretched thin, a kibble shortage would be another heavy blow—maybe the one that breaks us.

If this campaign fails, our already-fragile dogs will get even sicker. We can feel ourselves hitting a wall… I’m scared—scared for my dogs, scared we’ll reach a point of no return, scared a simple lack of kibble will wipe out everything we’ve built to protect them.”

3. Already weakened by pneumonia and heartworm, Nadežda’s very survival depends on her next bowls of kibble…

###

“Nadežda’s story is all too common: a pup abandoned at the shelter gate. I took her in, and she’s been here 13 years now. Recently she caught kennel cough that sank into her lungs and turned into severe pneumonia.

As if that weren’t enough, tests showed she also has heartworms, so she’s just finished an Ivermectin course. In her condition, proper food is absolutely critical. At her age, without the kibble she needs, it could very well be fatal.”

4. With subsidies gone and donations scant and sporadic, the shelter is suffocating under debt and can barely feed its dogs.

###

"To be perfectly frank, we’re in a really tough spot financially. Keeping the shelter running is incredibly expensive, with most of our budget swallowed up by food and vet bills—microchipping, rabies shots, passports, spaying and neutering… all those essentials add up fast for every single animal.

The issue is that we lost our city subsidy five or six years ago, right when the current mayor started his first term, and the debts have been piling up ever since. We’re about €2,000 in the red just for kibble, and I can’t even place new orders until that invoice is settled!

Our outstanding vet bill is roughly €2,500. And that’s not counting the shelter’s overheads, fuel, or travel costs. Honestly, I’ve done everything in my power. We’ve hit the limit of what our supplier can front us, the funds are already beyond tight, so unless we win the lottery… this kibble drive is truly our only hope right now."

5. Svjetlana isn't asking for money, only kibble to prevent the dogs from starving.

###

“I started all this with my own savings, back when I still had some, simply because I love dogs. When they suffer, I suffer. They’re always on my mind: if it’s raining or snowing, I picture them soaked and freezing. This isn’t a job; it’s a calling that takes boundless empathy and, let’s be honest, nerves of steel. People often say, ‘I admire how you stay sane through all this,’ and I usually reply, ‘I’m not sure I really am!’

Stress runs my life: not enough food, no steady cash flow, never enough helping hands—one worry just replaces another. When I began all those years ago, I truly thought the community would rally, that people would pitch in. I never imagined everything would land on my shoulders. And I’m not getting any younger; I’m weaker, more fragile. One bad fall and the whole thing could collapse.

This campaign is vital. If it succeeds, our dogs will have kibble for a while and we’ll get a bit of breathing space to tackle urgent vet bills and refurbish the worst kennels. In the end, that’s the goal behind everything we do: to make the dogs’ lives better.”
