1. In Serbia, Vesna has no more kibble left for the 250 dogs in her shelter. They will starve if nothing is done!
"All night long, there’s crying, barking, fighting. My stock is empty: today I have only half a bag of kibble left, barely enough to get us through the day. For a month now, I’ve been cutting rations, mixing dry bread with a handful of kibble just to make it last. But with around 250 dogs, plus puppies, it’s simply not enough for everyone!
The number of dogs keeps growing. Puppies, injured dogs, even amputees are abandoned : they’re thrown away, and I take them in. Now I have no kibble left, no money for the vet, not even wet food for the old dogs who can’t chew anymore. Food, food : that’s the only thing that matters. Everything else comes after.
Without kibble, the dogs are nervous, on edge; at night they whine, they squabble. And I feel awful. I’d rather go without food myself than let my dogs go hungry; but sadly, love doesn’t fill bowls! I’m truly afraid I won’t manage to find them food… Without kibble, we’re doomed."
2. Without kibble, the dogs are losing weight and fighting; if the shortage continues, the weakest won’t survive...
"The dogs are not eating enough, far from it. Hunger drives them to fight and attack each other. Bread sprinkled with kibble is not real food! Puppies don’t get what they need to grow, and sick or injured dogs don’t regain strength.
At this pace, disaster is inevitable. With so many dogs together and too little food, fights can escalate into tragedy! I already see tensions rising: tempers flare right after the meager bowls are licked clean...
Beyond the fights, hunger keeps weakening them day after day. I’ve already had to stop vaccines, boosters, scans, and treatments because I can’t afford them; if they’re underfed on top of that, the most fragile will decline even faster. I see it happening, and without kibble, I’m completely powerless to stop it."
3. Beaten and covered in tumors, Zuca is exhausted and pushed away at mealtime… He has no chance of surviving without kibble!
"Zuca is a male, about two years old, that I rescued six months ago after a Facebook post. He had been beaten, tortured by people… If I hadn’t taken him in, they would have killed him!
His condition is very bad: he’s covered in tumors and tires quickly. He needs nourishing meals to help him endure treatments and pain. Skipping meals or filling his bowl with bread only weakens him further…
Zuca is the most at risk: he’s slower, more vulnerable at the bowl, and the stronger dogs push him aside… What he needs is a reliable supply of kibble! Without it, he’ll lose more weight, his tumors will progress faster… He won’t survive."
4. Vesna’s finances are drained: donations have collapsed, debts are piling up, credit has been refused; she can no longer buy kibble!
"Our finances are in the red. Donations have dropped, people give what they can… but in total, we’re around €250–300 a month, barely. That’s nowhere near enough to feed more than 250 dogs! I owe over €2,000 to the vet, and I can no longer take kibble on credit. I’ve had to stop treatments I can’t pay for. I even tried to get a loan, but at over 70 years old, retired, of course I was refused...
Adoptions are extremely rare, and my health is failing: serious blood disease, kidney failure, cancer… I can’t even go fundraising in stores anymore. I don’t have the money to hire help, and here, volunteering doesn’t exist. I can only rely on my granddaughter. We do everything together... though lately, it’s mostly her handling it all alone.
This campaign for kibble is vital. Full bowls mean calmer dogs, fewer fights, growing puppies, and the little budget I have can finally go to vet emergencies and wet food for the seniors. Without it, I don’t see how I can keep them safe..."
5. Vesna is not asking for money, only kibble to keep her dogs from starving.
"I do this out of love. For me, there are no better friends than animals, and these dogs are my family! Abandonment is far too common here; many of my dogs are old or disabled. I took them in because no one else wanted them...
I live on a small pension: around €200, which is really very little. My devotion is unshakable, but it can’t buy kibble : only your support can. The community’s help is the only way to keep feeding them and to stop the spiral of hunger and violence at the shelter.
