1. In North Macedonia, Ivana is almost out of kibble to feed the hundreds of dogs she takes care of, at the shelter, on the streets and the dumps: they'll starve if no one helps!
"I can see an increase in the number of dogs, especially in our area here, where the companies and the industrial zones are. And the conditions for strays have worsened lately because of the many fires that spread across the country over the summer. The shelter itself has been very, very close to the fire.We were even forced to create a fire ring so that it wouldn't reach the shelter...
We've been trying to make ends meet the entire summer, and we are drained at this point, we need help! I have only four days left of kibble, I've already started cutting back on food, even at the shelter. Two of my puppies are underdeveloped because of the lack of food, or lack of quality food. And three of the puppies I currently have that are ill are also very slow on the recovery process…
My biggest concern is to have food. It's always an issue that creates a lot for anxiety. It's stressful, it's just... It is really something scary, because dog's lives depend on it."
2. Without kibble street dogs will fight and starve, Ivana won’t even be able to keep the dogs in her shelter safe.
"On the streets, the dogs will have a lot of competition, not having enough food ends up with dog fights. It's a question of survival. So the dogs that won't have enough to eat and won't have me giving out a meal, will very possibly die...
For the dogs in the shelter, I am always concerned to actually have dog bites and possibly have a dog killed, it is also a reality when food is lacking. Not even to mention the health of those who already have a health condition...
For me personally, it's completely mentally draining, knowing that whatever I do, I still can’t give them enough.”
3. Thrown at the dump like garbage, Hope was rescued during our visit. She's only skin and bones and needs kibble to recover.
"I saw her three weeks ago, she was followed by three huge dogs on the dump. She was just as scared then as she was today, but it was already night and I couldn't get her.
Obviously, someone left her at the dump, she was not spayed of course... I can see ticks and mange, but I will know further when we will have blood work done.
She is already severely emaciated, which means that despite me rescuing her today, she's at serious risk of death if we do not manage to get kibble."
4. Donations have been low for months, debts are piling up... Ivana is holding the line on all fronts, but needs help before it collapses.
"Currently, I can't say we are at a good point. Donations have been low the entire summer. Current debts are weekly at the vets because we have quite a few dogs stationed at the clinic... And of course we have debts with the food supplier.
Food is always a priority when finances are very stretched, so we have been prolonging some operations, postponing spays and neuters, booster shots, due to the lack of funds. But can't go on like this. It jeopardizes the safety of our dogs..."
5. Ivana isn’t asking for money, just kibble to stop the dogs from starving.
"Whenever I see a dog on the streets, I know it can live a better life. This is my main motivation. Happy stories of dogs I've saved who have been adopted always keep me inspired.
It takes a different kind of drive and determination to do what I do, and what rescuers in general do because we are exposed to seeing and living a lot of the dogs suffering. So I believe that we are very emotional people, and we feel deeply for these beings.
We invest so much time and effort into adjusting these dogs that come from different situations in life and different places, to adjust them properly, to teach them what human interaction needs to be, to show them they don't need to be afraid... That is why we need help, because without people to help for the dogs, I can't keep them safe."
