“We’re caring for 106 dogs now, just a few weeks ago, there were 94. Their number keeps growing, mostly because of abandonments... At the shelter, space is running out, and so is time. Every new arrival needs the basics: vaccines, vet check-ups, identification. We do our best, but with winter coming, my biggest fear remains the same: that each dog can stay warm… and have something to eat!
Our kibble stock is nearly empty. For days now, portions have been smaller, and even though we try to spare the most fragile, the consequences are already showing: diarrhea is back, and some dogs are losing weight…
Feeding over a hundred dogs every day is hard enough and as the cold sets in, their needs only increase, since they burn more calories just to stay warm. If we can’t secure kibble soon, we’ll have to ration even more… and that would be disastrous for them all.”
“We’re doing everything we can, but we can’t maintain good-quality food consistently. The signs don’t lie: digestive issues, diarrhea, weight loss, stress at mealtimes...
Some dogs are especially vulnerable. We currently have six suffering from heartworm; their treatment is long and costly and it only works if they eat properly! Others are recovering from surgeries and injuries; they need extra calories to heal. Without kibble, their recovery stalls...
Now that the cold is settling in, things are becoming even more critical. In winter, dogs burn energy just to avoid freezing! If this kibble campaign fails, many won’t have the strength to make it through the winter.”
“Meda is about seven years old. He’s a German Shepherd we found abandoned, even though he was microchipped... He’d been left in a terrible state, with a large open wound on his back and several smaller ones, all infected and full of maggots. We rushed him to the vet and have been caring for him daily with treatments and dressings. It’s been a month now, and while there’s some progress, you can still see how fragile he is...
Despite everything, Meda is gentle and affectionate. He seeks contact and trust, even after all he’s endured. It’s unbelievable. But he’s still very weak, and he needs quality food to regain strength. As long as he doesn’t eat properly, his body can’t heal, his wounds close slowly, and the risk of infection remains high.
Meda is one of the most vulnerable dogs at the shelter : he worries me deeply. This campaign could truly save his life.”
“It’s all connected : money and kibble. Every month, we need a huge amount of kibble to feed everyone. But with sick dogs, surgeries, and sterilizations no longer covered by the town, expenses are exploding. We do what we can, we make arrangements, we sometimes borrow... but it’s getting harder and harder to keep up.
We’re in debt for kibble, for vet care, and more... Rescuing a single dog recently cost us 800 euros. That’s enormous for us! The amounts change, but the pressure doesn’t: we have to pay, keep treating, and above all, keep feeding everyone.
We’ve already asked for help, launched local appeals, even received some support from abroad… but it’s never enough, because the needs never stop. That’s why this kibble campaign is vital: it ensures the dogs can eat, heal, and make it through winter in decent conditions. Without kibble, we just can’t make it.”
“Every day at the shelter revolves around the dogs: watching, treating, cleaning, feeding, noticing the smallest change. A dog eating less, a different look, a cough… every sign matters. The work never ends, and even at night, I check the cameras, worried by a sudden bark in the dark. It’s constant, and exhausting.
But it’s not just care, it’s also a bond. Many of these dogs have known fear, pain, abandonment. Here, they find trust again, gentleness. Despite the fatigue and moments of doubt, one look, one gesture, is enough to remind me why I keep going. This shelter is their only safety, their only home.
But no one can do this alone. Even with the best will in the world, caring for over a hundred dogs is impossible without help. Every bag of kibble, every donation, every gesture truly matters. In the end, that’s what makes the difference: a full bowl, a dog regaining strength, a life held up by solidarity.”
