Animal Webaction visited the site 09 October 2025 and confirms the situation described below.
“Around 86 stray dogs depend on us out here. But for the past three months, we haven’t been able to feed them properly. We only manage to go out twice a week, and even then, we have so little to give them : leftovers, bits of bread, chicken bones... sometimes nothing at all. The dogs are thin, weak, some have fallen ill, and we’ve already lost several...
On top of that, in recent months, several female dogs have given birth : three different litters, with up to eleven puppies each. That’s even more mouths to feed, when we already have nothing left! And because of our lack of means, we can no longer afford sterilizations to stop things from getting worse.
If we don’t receive kibble soon, the situation will spiral out of control. Diseases will spread, wounds will worsen, and many street dogs will die : either from hunger, exhaustion, or being killed by the authorities before that happens…”
“Mimoune is about five years old. Not an old dog, but for one living on the streets, that’s already a lot… He’s managed to avoid the dog catchers so far, a miracle in itself. He used to be strong, healthy, full of energy, that’s what kept him alive all this time. But now, he’s growing weaker and weaker.
He’s lost a lot of weight, and it’s clear that lack of food is the main reason. His eyes are infected, and he’s starting to have skin issues. Three weeks ago, the vet prescribed a treatment, but his condition hasn’t improved. The long gaps between our feeding rounds, and the harsh conditions he lives in, don’t help at all… And we can’t take him to the shelter, where 73 hungry dogs are already waiting for us.
Everything depends on this campaign: if we receive kibble, we’ll be able to feed the street dogs more often, and give Mimoune a real chance to survive. Otherwise, like so many others, his condition will just keep getting worse…”
“At the shelter, things have become very difficult. We’ve completely run out of kibble. For the past two months, we’ve been improvising with what we can find : boiling chicken carcasses and mixing them with rice and stale bread. The quality of this makeshift food is terrible, and it’s nowhere near enough to feed 73 dogs.
I know they’re hungry. I know what I give them isn’t enough. Many have lost weight, some are suffering from malnutrition, others are falling sick… Those who need regular treatments are particularly fragile.
Hunger also causes tension. The dogs fight among themselves, becoming nervous and aggressive. Each fight leads to new injuries, and new medical costs to cover… when we can’t even pay our existing bills! Without kibble, things will soon get completely out of hand.”
“Our financial situation is disastrous. We’re in debt everywhere: over €700 at the vet, €480 with the kibble supplier, and €600 in late rent. Donations have dropped by half in recent months. Some of our regular donors have passed away, others have stopped giving because they can’t afford to anymore. We understand, of course, but for us, it’s a disaster.
With our kibble supplier, we’re not allowed to go over €500 in debt. And until we’ve paid back at least half, we’re not allowed to order again. Since we already owe €480, we’ve hit the limit. We’re stuck.
We’ve been sharing calls for help nonstop on social media, talking to everyone we can… but nothing works. We simply can’t afford to buy kibble anymore. It’s that simple: either this campaign succeeds, or everything collapses. All our work, all those rescues, all these years of effort… will have been for nothing.”
“For years, we’ve dedicated our lives to the abandoned dogs of Essaouira. At the shelter, we try to give them what the streets deny them: shelter, food, care, and above all, love. Many have known fear, hunger, and violence. Here, they finally find a little peace, and we do everything we can to make it last.
Every day, we fight so they can have a dignified life, because we believe they too have the right to stability, safety, and affection, just like we do! That belief is what keeps us going.
But today, more than ever, we need your support. Your help is vital for the shelter to keep running, for these animals to simply live. Every donation, every sack of kibble means a full bowl, a fight prevented, a life saved. Without you, it could all come to an end…”
