Animal Webaction visited the site 09 December 2025 and confirms the situation described below.

1. In Serbia, Svetlana has almost no kibble left to feed the 260 dogs at her shelter. They will starve if no one helps them.

%%%

"Right now, we have 260 dogs at the shelter. It’s too many. Far too many for the resources we have. But we don’t have the luxury of choosing. When a dog is in need, we take them in. And in Serbia, sadly, abandoned dogs are not in short supply... The number of dogs keeps rising, and so do their needs, but food donations are not keeping up.

Today the dogs are on half rations because we have almost nothing left. The remaining kibble will barely last the day, and it’s a mix of different bags I managed to gather wherever I could.

I have one thing on my mind how to feed them tomorrow and with what. We have no reserves, no safety net. Just hundreds of dogs waiting, and me trying not to panic... I carry that pressure every hour. It’s simple. Either this campaign succeeds, or my dogs will be the ones to suffer..."

2. Without kibble, fights break out and the dogs get hurt. Svetlana lives in fear that she won’t be able to keep them safe.

###

"We don’t have enough kibble, and you can feel it immediately. The dogs are tense, restless, on edge. Every mealtime becomes a stressful moment. We’ve already had fights, injuries... Things can spiral fast.

If this kibble shortage continues, it won’t just be difficult, it will be a disaster! I try not to look too far ahead, but one thing is very clear: if I have nothing left to feed them, I won’t be able to keep them all here.

I’ve even thought about releasing a few of the younger dogs. Honestly, just saying it makes me sick, but that’s the kind of dilemma I’m facing right now because the situation is so desperate."

3. After two years fighting leishmaniasis, Rozi is only just starting to get better. Without kibble, a relapse is inevitable.

###

"I found Rozi in September 2023, very close to the shelter. She was probably abandoned there by her owners. She had just been spayed, and her scar worried me right away, the wound looked infected. And on top of that, she already had serious skin problems.

We tried to treat her with vet visits, tests, antibiotics, but nothing was conclusive. Rozi’s skin didn’t improve. It got worse, and we were moving forward without understanding what we were dealing with. In the end, it was only after sending a sample to Italy that a vet could finally make the diagnosis leishmaniasis. From there, we were able to start the right treatment, and Rozi began to improve.

But it’s very fragile. You can still see the condition she’s in, two years after her rescue. Leishmaniasis is a lifelong disease. Without regular treatment, and without kibble to support her body, a relapse is certain."

4. The need for kibble is huge, donations have stopped: Svetlana is backed into a corner and has only this campaign to feed her dogs.

###

"Financially, I’m crushed. The shelter’s debt has become huge. What comes in doesn’t even cover what goes out. I count, recount, try every possible way to make it work, and it never adds up. And I already know it January is going to be a wall. In January, donations stop, but I still have to keep going, feeding them, paying bills, holding on with almost nothing.

Kibble is by far what drains us the most because it takes enormous quantities to feed nearly 300 dogs. I never have the means to build a real stock. So I live with this question constantly: Will I have enough to feed them tomorrow morning? I rush to buy food at the last minute because I can’t plan ahead. It’s truly survival from day to day, cent by cent.

Meanwhile, the bills keep piling up electricity, vet costs. Every unpaid bill is another weight. Thankfully, a Dutch organization helps sometimes by sending a little money and covering some spay and neuter surgeries, but it doesn’t cover everything, far from it. Medications are missing, kibble is missing, and all too often I have to pay myself on a limited salary. I’m exhausted, completely drained. This campaign changes everything. It lets us hold on, breathe, and above all feed our dogs. It’s vital."

5. Svetlana is not asking for money, only for kibble so her dogs don’t starve.

###

"I carry this shelter on my shoulders, day after day. People abandon dogs so easily. They drop them off, and then that’s it. They disappear. And on top of everything else, there’s a huge daily challenge: the lack of volunteers. When you don’t have enough hands, everything becomes heavier, slower, more complicated, especially with so many dogs to care for.

So I try to limit rescues as much as I can because I’m already on a knife edge. I can’t open the doors wide for every request, even though it breaks my heart. There are already 260 dogs here who depend entirely on this shelter. And at this point, every new arrival means more kibble to find, more medical care, more pressure.

Waking up every morning wondering what 260 dogs will eat wears you down. And it has to be said clearly: many people don’t realize the quantities needed. They think a few bags will last for months, but with numbers like this, everything disappears incredibly fast!

So yes, every donation of kibble matters. Because in the end, it means full bowls, less tension, fewer fights, and dogs who can finally eat their fill."

8. In Serbia, street dogs are hunted by the State and ignored by the population, volunteers like Svetlana are their only hope.
