Animal Webaction visited the site 12 February 2026 and confirms the situation described below.

"Out on the streets, we feed 67 dogs. And there are always more. Abandonments, over and over again. Every time we help one, two more show up. It never stops. And in winter, it’s especially hard for them. They’re outside all the time, in the rain, in the cold, with no proper shelter.
The worst part is that we’re running out of kibble. We buy some whenever a little money comes in, but right now, nothing is coming in. So we’ve had to cut everyone’s portions. But there’s something people need to understand: our feeding rounds aren’t just about making sure the street dogs eat. They’re what keep them alive, and more importantly, what keep them in their territory. That’s what protects them.
Because as soon as they’re hungry, they wander. They leave their area and go further into town looking for food. They cross roads, get close to buildings and shops. In the past few weeks alone, several dogs have been hit by cars. Without kibble, it’s simple: we can’t protect the street dogs anymore. And that terrifies us."

"In our shelters, things are just as tense. We’re currently caring for 65 dogs. That number isn’t going down because we rescue more dogs than we’re able to get adopted. Many arrived before winter, some already sick or injured. They need stability, medical care, and above all, proper meals every single day.
The problem is that donations dropped around the holidays, and they never really picked back up. So we’ve had to reduce rations. When we can, we add stale bread just to make the bowls look a little fuller. But we know it’s not appropriate. Some dogs develop digestive issues, their immune systems weaken, and that leads to even more vet bills, which we already can’t afford.
Right now, we only have 10 bags of kibble left. That should last until the end of the week, and after that, we just don’t know. We live with this constant anxiety: if we run out of kibble, the dogs will lose weight, grow weaker, become more nervous. In a shelter, once hunger sets in, tensions rise fast. And a fight here means wounds, infections, sometimes stitches. We do everything we can to prevent that. But without kibble, we won’t be able to stop things from spiraling."

"Sreten is 9 years old. We found him downtown, no microchip, with severe inflammation in both eyelids. He had to undergo surgery. After that, things didn’t go as planned: complications, infections, joint pain. He went through treatment after treatment. All of it left him very weak.
Today, he’s doing “okay”… but the truth is, he’s only stable because we’re extremely careful. The slightest stress or change in his diet, and he relapses. His eyes flare up again, he loses weight quickly. His immune system is fragile, and at 9 years old, he doesn’t bounce back like a young dog. We can see it. He doesn’t have much margin left.
Sreten is very gentle, very sweet. He would never fight over a food bowl. If the dogs are hungry and tensions rise, he’ll be one of the first to struggle. For him, eating every day, in sufficient amounts, isn’t a comfort. It’s what keeps him on his feet. Without that, we know things could go downhill very fast."

"Financially, we’re at the breaking point. We’re in debt and we just can’t catch up. The expenses keep piling up: kibble, treatments, deworming, emergencies. We owe money to two pet stores and two veterinary clinics. The amounts have become huge, and we’re constantly being reminded about unpaid bills.
We do have a few regular donors, and without them we wouldn’t still be standing. But most of them fund specific cases, especially sick dogs. That’s not enough to feed all the dogs in our care. And since the holidays, donations have dropped and haven’t recovered. Concretely, that means we have no reserves. We can’t plan ahead. We count every single bag.
Right now, we’re even having to postpone urgent vet appointments. Five dogs need examinations outside of Zaječar, but we simply can’t afford to take them. These are chronic cases, and we know their condition could worsen while we wait.
This kibble campaign is what could help us stabilize things now. Without guaranteed food, we can’t fix anything else, we can’t rebuild. We’re just trying not to sink."

"We can’t look away. When we see a dog who’s starving, injured, sick, completely dependent on humans… we can’t pretend we didn’t see them. When we treat them, help them stand again, and think about the state they were in when we found them, what we feel is indescribable. That’s what keeps us going.
But behind that, there’s a reality very few people imagine. We carry dozens of lives, every single day. We wake up with a knot in our stomach wondering if we’ll have enough to feed everyone. We count, we calculate, we postpone, we improvise. We live with the constant fear that everything could fall apart if we run out of kibble, if an emergency happens, if a bill arrives at the wrong moment.
We keep going because we love them. Because they have no one else. But we can’t do this alone forever. If more people gave a little, if everyone made a small gesture, it would change everything. For them, for their future. And for us, who are just trying not to let them down."
