Animal Webaction visited the site 23 February 2026 and confirms the situation described below.

1. In Serbia, Zuzana is almost out of kibble to feed the 100 dogs at her shelter. They will starve if no one helps them.

%%%

"The number of dogs at the shelter is constantly changing, but one thing never does: stray dogs keep arriving, especially the most broken ones, the ones who have been hit by cars, bitten, injured. We take the most urgent cases, even when we have no space left. But every new dog also means one more bowl to fill. And right now, I honestly do not know how I am going to keep filling them...

The kibble supply is almost gone. I count the days constantly. There is barely enough left for one week, and after that… I do not know. Feeding a hundred dogs is enormous, especially given the price of kibble. It is not just an expense, it is a wall to climb, month after month.

And in winter, the pressure gets even worse. The dogs are fighting dampness and cold. They need to eat more just to cope. When I think about their bowls, I am not thinking about comfort. I am thinking about what keeps them standing, what helps them make it through the night, especially when temperatures drop and there is no room for mistakes. That anxiety never leaves me."

2. The shelter’s many vulnerable dogs are doomed without kibble.

###

"Everything can unravel very quickly here, I know that all too well. And it comes down to one thing: our ability to fill the bowls. As soon as the dogs are hungry, tension rises in the kennels, and they start losing weight. It is always the most fragile who collapse first, those who are already sick, those recovering from trauma, those carrying old pain and who do not have the reserves the others do.

If the campaign fails, that is exactly what will happen, there is no doubt about it. And in the middle of winter, when dogs already have to burn more energy just to stay warm, some simply will not keep up in the face of a shortage...

What I carry with me is this certainty: hunger is not a small hardship, it triggers everything else. Emotionally, it is extremely hard. I can handle exhaustion, I can handle the cold, I can handle emergencies. But watching a dog search for food, wait, grow weaker, that is a violence that stays in your mind and never truly fades."

3. Injured, exhausted, sick… Petar will not have the strength to fight without kibble.

###

"We found Petar two days ago. He was lying in front of a shop, not moving, refusing to eat. When a dog stays like that outside, motionless, it means the body is already starting to shut down.

The veterinarian suspects babesiosis, a parasitic blood infection transmitted by ticks that destroys red blood cells and can kill if the dog does not have the strength to fight. Petar also has a wound on his hindquarters, and we do not know how it happened. It could have been a blow, an attack, a fall. On the street, you never really know.

What we do know is that he is exhausted, drained, completely worn out. If he does not eat properly, he will not regain weight, he will remain weak, and the treatment will no longer be enough to offset his exhaustion. For Petar, every bowl truly matters. That is not a figure of speech, it is a medical reality."

4. Donations are slowing down and debts are soaring. Zuzana can no longer fill the bowls.

###

"We do not have steady donations. We survive on what people can give, when they can give it. I am not saying this to dramatize the situation, it is simply our daily reality. The municipality gives us a small annual subsidy, which barely covers one month of expenses. After that, there is the rest of the year to get through, with a hundred dogs to feed, plus medical care, plus emergencies that come without warning.

Right now, veterinary bills are piling up: about 600 euros for rabies vaccinations, nearly 500 euros for heartworm tests, not to mention treatments, long term medications, injured dogs who need examinations and sometimes surgery. We already have debts because some bills had to be postponed and accumulated. If we cannot find the money, the debt simply grows until everything collapses.

This campaign is vital for us. It does not pay for extras. It pays for meals. It buys time. It prevents the hole that is coming. If we do not reach the goal, I do not know how we will feed the dogs. And without kibble, there is no shelter. Because everything begins with the bowl."

5. Zuzana is not asking for money, only for kibble to keep the dogs from starving.

###

"I am 70 years old, and I have been helping animals for years. I started by feeding stray dogs before going to work, stopping along the road on my bicycle. It was not a project, it was a reflex. I could not look away. Then the numbers grew, emergencies followed one after another, and today we have a shelter and nearly a hundred dogs who depend on us every single day.

I feel deeply exhausted, physically and emotionally. This work never stops. Even when I go home, I think about them. I wonder if everything is alright, if the supplies will last, if a dog might collapse. I have been bitten while breaking up fights. I even lost part of a finger. But I keep going, because seeing them safe, seeing them lying calmly in the sun, gives me the strength to come back.

But one person cannot carry a hundred lives alone. Without support, it is impossible. Kibble means bowls filled morning and night. It means dogs keeping their strength, healing, waiting for adoption. Your donation does not fund comfort. It simply allows them to eat. And here, eating means staying alive."

8. In Serbia, street dogs are hunted by the state and ignored by the population, volunteers like Zuzana are their only hope.
