1. In Serbia, Svetlana has almost no kibble left to feed the 263 dogs in her shelter. They will starve if no one helps them!
"There are 263 dogs right now, and I need practically 5 bags of kibble a day to feed them all, I think people don't understand what that means. It gets eaten very quickly, and I'm stuck, I can't buy anymore. With what am I going to buy it? I must have a funds or donations, and there are less and less of those...
Right now, we have about 3 days of kibble left, and I already started to reduce the portions a bit more than two weeks ago. Of course the nervousness is noticeable, especially in the morning. They will sometimes start attacking each other. And you know, they feel my mood...
I feel desperate, I mean... desperate. Because I have tried everything. There, I am trying and I have tried. Whatever comes to mind, I try. These dogs, they need to be cared for, they need to eat everyday! I do not know, I swear I do not know what I would do if I can't find any kibble."
2. Already weakened by illness, age, or surgery, many of these dogs would not survive kibble shortage!
"We do have a few serious cases at the moment, some who have recently been operated on, some who will need to get surgery. We have two dogs who need surgery for mammary gland tumors, I have had to cover them since December, that was two months ago... But I have debts everywhere including around 1000€ with my vets, and I need to pay for that before I can bring them in. Those are urgent cases.
There are also old and vulnerable dogs, some who need special food and supplements. I keep going, I'm constantly thinking about how to borrow and how to manage to be on all fronts. But donations now, since the beginning of the year, they have decreased drastically. It is terrible, emotionally, and I'm at a point where I'm really worried, we really need a hand."
3. Mimi was going to be euthanized, and was only saved thanks to the shelter… today, she needs kibble to recover!
"We found her at the vet’s, because she was going to be euthanized. They called and asked whether I wanted to take her, because her owner had given her up.
She had been hit by a car, her spine was broken and nothing could be done. We did all the tests, considered all the options, but her spine can't even be straightened because it has already healed that way. If they break it, it will only make things worse. Now she has a wheelchair, she is dealing with pressure sores but we are taking care of it, they are already smaller. It just takes patience and care.
Even if she behaves like she's the happiest dog in the world, she remains vulnerable and needs to fully recover, she can't do that without proper food, she needs kibble."
4. Even small donations have stopped... Svetlana is keeping the shelter afloat on her salary alone, but it is not enough!
"Right now, most of the issues come from the lack of donations. Because of the situation in the world, of wars, of prices rising everywhere, people are scared, so what they had been sending until recently has stopped. Even people who regularly sent 5, 10, 15 euros, have stopped. But those small donations represent salvation for us, really...
The shelter lives off my salary and donations only, so I'm left struggling to cover all the dogs' needs. I have to feed them, I have to pay for vet costs, I have to pay the workers, I have to pay for electricity, I have to buy straw, I have to do all that and more, and I mean, all of that costs money.
I also wrote to several foundations, to ask them if they could either help for food, for adoptions, whatever they could do to help. Some never answered, some replied they were already helping other shelters. With my salary only, I go from one debt into another, it's awful, and at that stage it is a catastrophe for kibble, as I can't get any."
5. Svetlana is not asking for money, only for kibble so her dogs don’t starve.
"If I could leave my job and just do this, just dedicate my whole time to this shelter and to these dogs, it would be ideal, truly. Because I love them deeply, they really are loyal and grateful, they give so much love...
A good day here is when the bowls are full, when everyone is fed, when everyone is playful, when you pass by, and then they all run up to hug, that means, that is a good day. And I so hope we will have many more."
