1. In Serbia, Vesna is almost out of kibble for the 200 dogs in her shelter. They will starve if no one does anything!
"Right now, we have around 200 dogs at the shelter, and the number just keeps growing. Tiny puppies keep arriving, I just can’t walk past when I see one abandoned in the street, sick, so small. I bring them back, I find them a place. That’s just how it works. But of course, the more dogs there are, the more they need to eat… and now, I only have a few bags of kibble left. It’s not going to last long.
For about twenty days now, we’ve been cutting back their rations. To make it last a bit longer, we mix the kibble with bread and stale biscuits. It’s not what they need, but it’s all we have. And you can tell: at night, they bark, they can’t settle down. When there’s enough food, everything is calm. But as soon as it starts running out, they fight, they steal food from each other… everything spirals out of control.
My biggest worry right now is simple: will I be able to feed them? I get no help from the state, nothing at all. In Serbia, they don’t help anyone. They already don’t care about people, so dogs… As for me, I’ve been sick for a long time, and I struggle to take care of myself. And on top of that, tick season has started. We remove them by hand because there’s no money left to buy treatments. Every day that passes, I wonder how I’m going to feed my dogs..."
2. The dogs are hungry, the risk of fights is skyrocketing: the most vulnerable dogs will be the first to suffer...
"When there isn’t enough food, everything changes. The dogs bark all night, they can’t calm down anymore. They attack each other, they steal, it’s constant chaos. This isn’t their true behavior. When they eat properly, they’re calm. It’s hunger that makes them like this.
The problem is that at the shelter, we have many fragile dogs. The old ones, the blind, the disabled: they’re the ones I worry about the most. They can’t fight to get to the food bowl... If there’s nothing left, they’ll be the first to suffer. Their condition will deteriorate very quickly.
Without kibble, I’m afraid they could end up eating each other... it can go that far. Just thinking about it is unbearable. But that’s the reality today."
3. Meager pension, zero donations, constant veterinary expenses: it’s impossible to fill their bowls without this campaign.
"If I had to sum up our financial situation in one sentence, it would be: nothing. A big zero. My pension is around 200 euros. To meet the needs of 200 dogs every month, it goes without saying that it’s not enough.
There are no donations coming in: people here don’t have money either. I tried asking for help on Facebook, but I’m told I’m begging. And today, the law even forbids me from going out into the street to ask for help for the dogs. In any case, I’m too sick to do it, and my granddaughter, the only one who helps me at the shelter, has to take care of 200 dogs every day: she doesn’t have time to stand outside supermarkets asking for kibble... No matter what we try, here, there are no solutions left.
Veterinary costs, food, medication, antiparasitic treatments now that tick season has started, all of that costs money I don’t have. A dachshund has just had surgery for a tumor on its ear. I have a blind dog with demodicosis. Every expense is a wall. This campaign is not a little extra boost: it’s the only thing standing between my dogs and empty bowls."
4. Vesna is not asking for money, only kibble to prevent the dogs from starving.
"I don’t see myself as someone exceptional. I simply see myself as the mother of abandoned dogs: that’s the only way to put it. They are my family. Time doesn’t matter, neither do I. What matters is that they eat, that they are well.
In Serbia, there is no real support for animals. Volunteers like me fill the void left by the state, without funding, without recognition, without anything. I’ve been doing this for years, despite illness, despite financial difficulties. I keep going because I can’t imagine doing otherwise. I love animals more than myself, that’s simply the truth.
What gives me strength is knowing that there are people, somewhere, even far away, who care about animals, about us. Every donation, every bag of kibble you buy: it means my dogs will eat tomorrow. I can’t do this alone, I’m not rich. My wealth is animals, not money! But with the support of those who believe in it, I can keep going. And so can they."
