1. In Serbia, Svetlana has almost no kibble left to feed the 280 dogs in her shelter. They could starve to death!
"We have 280 dogs at the shelter today, and that number just keeps climbing. In the past few months alone, I've taken in around 25 dogs, puppies and adults, fresh litters dumped by the roadside and injured ones picked up off the roads. Over that same stretch, I've only managed to rehome 5. 5, against 25 coming in. You see the problem: they keep pouring in, they almost never leave, and every new arrival is one more bowl to fill!
To feed everyone, I need a hundred kilos of kibble a day, five full bags. When I say that number, people's eyes go wide, but that's the daily reality of a shelter this size. For two weeks now I've been rationing, serving half portions, stretching whatever's left from one meal to the next...
I've only got a few days left in front of me, and my supplier won't let me take anything more until I've settled what I owe. I watch the stock go down, and I already know the day there'll be nothing left to put in the bowls."
2. Hungry and on edge, the dogs fight at mealtime: the most fragile ones could pay with their health.
"Hunger, in dogs, you can read it in how they behave before you can even see it on their bodies. In the morning, at the usual feeding time, the mood has changed. They shove around the bowls, they growl over a spot, and I've already had to pull several of them apart in a hurry. Fights have broken out, when normally, between them, everything goes just fine.
With nearly 300 dogs together in one place, I live in fear that one of these scuffles turns serious and a dog ends up hurt. I spend my mornings watching, stepping in, calming things down, but I know full well I'm not treating the cause. These aren't mean dogs: it's hunger talking in their place.
The trouble is, it's my most fragile ones who'll pay first. Taps, my old boy of twelve, can already barely get around on his back legs. The Malinois puppies have only just come through a month of treatment for parvo and need to eat well to grow. And Milutin is recovering from both starvation and babesiosis... For dogs in that shape, cut rate food isn't a small thing: it's everything we managed to rebuild collapsing."
3. Covered in mange and eaten away by parasites, Tringa won't recover without food to sustain her.
"I found Tringa a month ago, by the side of a very busy road. She's a young female, about two years old, and she was in a terrible state: mange, demodex, and worms on top of it all. To be able to treat her, we had to shave her completely. Seeing an animal so young so damaged, it breaks your heart.
Today I'm treating her as best I can. I spray her skin with antiseptic, I give her tablets for the worms and supplements to get her back on her feet. Little by little, she's climbing back, and I'm starting to see the dog she could become.
But a treatment like hers only works if the body has something to fight with. Without good food every day, her skin won't heal and the disease will take over again. For Tringa, kibble isn't a comfort, it's what decides whether all this care will have been worth anything or not."
4. Choked by debt and cut off by her supplier, Svetlana has drained even her own savings.
"What tipped everything over is the debt piling up on every side. I owe nearly a thousand euros to my vets, as much again to my kibble supplier, on top of the electricity and the wages I still owe my two workers. And the worst part is that my supplier won't give me credit anymore: until I've paid, I simply can't get any kibble.
There are donations coming in, sure, and the Dutch organization is still there for me, sending kibble, blankets, medication. But with a hundred kilos swallowed every day, everything that comes in is gone in no time, and it never adds up.
Month after month, I dip into my own salary to fill the gaps, but my means have shrunk and I can't put in as much as I used to. I give everything I can, I go from one debt to the next, and I've reached the end of what I can carry on my own."
5. Svetlana isn't asking for money, only kibble to keep the dogs from starving.
"For years now I've been carrying this shelter on my own back, day after day. My days start around seven or eight, when I open the kennels and go check on each dog. Then come the morning treatments, the water to change everywhere, then feeding from ten o'clock on, the cleaning, often a run to the vet in the afternoon, the evening treatments, and the kennels I shut again at nightfall.
All of it, I handle almost alone, without a break. I'm not asking for money, I've never asked for anything other than kibble to fill the bowls. It's the one thing I truly lack right now, and it's exactly the thing that can hold everything together. If the bags don't come, all this work, all these years spent saving them one by one, will have led only to this: watching them go hungry today."
