1. In Morocco, Ibtissam has almost no kibble left to feed the 140 dogs in her shelter. They could starve to death!
“Today, 140 dogs are relying on me at the shelter, and I only have enough kibble left for two or three days. I have been rationing for 20 days now: cutting down portions, spreading out what I can, and no one is eating enough. Every bowl I fill only halfway reminds me that I am losing this battle.
Sometimes I still manage to buy a little kibble day by day, in tiny quantities, when I can find the money. But it is never enough for everyone, and I never know whether I’ll be able to do it again the next day. We are in the middle of summer in Marrakech: the heat is crushing the shelter, the dogs are getting dehydrated, and some are suffering from heatstroke. Hungry dogs in this heat is a double punishment.
The situation is critical, and I do not use that word lightly. Without this campaign, in just a few days, I will have absolutely nothing left to give them...”
2. Weakened by 20 days of rationing and a wave of ticks, dogs have already died: the most vulnerable ones will be next.
“The lack of kibble is already taking a terrible toll. My dogs are losing weight, their immune systems are collapsing, and illnesses are spreading. And when food runs out, tensions rise: fights have started breaking out. But the worst part is that everything is piling up. We were hit by a massive wave of ticks, and I lost several of my babies... The ticks weakened their immune systems, and with the rationing, their bodies no longer had the strength to fight back.
The problem is not over: the ticks are still here, and with the heat, parasites are multiplying. Snakes and scorpions have even settled in at the shelter. To get rid of them, we would need a full-scale treatment, but that would mean moving all 140 dogs while it is being carried out: finding somewhere to take them, organising the logistics... it is almost impossible. So we do what we can with what little we have, and my animals remain in danger. I put out an appeal for help with this problem, but there was almost no response.
Today, I have sick, anaemic and recovering dogs: Aksha is fighting a tumour, Zeva needs to have a leg amputated... For them, proper food is not a comfort, it is their only chance to hold on. If the kibble does not arrive, I know exactly what will happen, because it is already happening: the weakest ones will die, one after another.”
3. Ravaged by ehrlichiosis, Sham keeps losing consciousness: without kibble, he will not have the strength to fight.
“Sham was born here, at the shelter. I had taken in his mother at the time, and she was pregnant. He is 4 years old now. I saw him being born, I watched him grow up... and now I am watching him slowly fade away.
He is fighting ehrlichiosis, the tick-borne disease that is devastating the shelter. He has lost a lot of weight, he is anaemic, he has nosebleeds, and at times he loses consciousness. Seeing him like this breaks my heart.
To fight the disease, Sham absolutely needs to eat properly, every single day, without exception. An anaemic, rationed dog cannot win this battle. If the food runs out, his life will run out with it.”
4. Thousands of euros in debt and forced to sell her belongings, Ibtissam has reached breaking point.
“Financially, I am on the brink. My debts now amount to thousands, between the kibble supplier, the vet and the rent. I get by from one day to the next, always going deeper into debt, selling things here and there. I keep facing one crisis after another, but I am sinking deeper every time.
You need to understand that the shelter no longer has running water: for more than two years, I have had to buy water, two tankers a week, in the middle of the Moroccan summer. And the damage from this winter’s rains still has not been repaired: the roof is cracking, and the wooden beams, soaked through with water, are starting to break under the heat. Every problem leads to another, and every repair will have to wait, because the priority is filling the bowls.
One person works full-time at the shelter, another part-time: without them, everything would collapse. But their hands cannot replace the kibble that is missing. I have given everything, sold everything, borrowed everything. Today, I have no reserves left, and 140 dogs are waiting for their bowl every day.”
5. Ibtissam is not asking for money, only kibble to keep the dogs from starving to death.
“The problems keep piling up, on top of my own health issues. I fell on some stairs: I damaged my coccyx, a vertebra and my right hip. That is not the most important thing, but the result is that I am being kept away from the shelter. So I manage things by phone and video calls, to see a little of how things are, to see my babies a little... Being away from them at a time like this is another kind of suffering.
There has been one small light in recent months: one of my protégés found a family. Moments like that remind me why I fight. But one adoption does not fill 140 bowls, and with every day that passes, I get closer to the moment when I will have nothing left to put in them.
Where do things stand today? The same fear as always, the same stress, the fear of no longer being able to feed my dogs. I keep going, even from afar, even by phone, because they are my babies and no one else will fill their bowls for me. But I cannot do this alone: without this campaign, I will not hold on, and neither will they.”
