1. In Bosnia, Armina has almost no kibble left to feed the 700 dogs at her shelter. They could starve to death!
"Today, 700 dogs depend on us at the shelter, and we've only got a few days of kibble left, three at the most. The situation is critical. Every morning, we wake up with the same question: how are we going to fill all these bowls tomorrow?
For several days now, we've been rationing. We mix the kibble with stale bread and leftovers from a restaurant so that everyone has something in their belly. But we don't have bread or leftovers every day, so we cut the portions, again, just to manage to feed each one. It's not really feeding them anymore, it's making it last.
And the shelter never empties out, quite the opposite. Since spring, people have started dumping their dogs again on the road that leads up here, sometimes right outside our gate. We take in twenty to thirty of them every month. We get about ten adopted, and we're glad every single time, but three times as many come in as we manage to place! Our numbers keep climbing, and with the heatwave that's been crushing Bosnia for two months now, over 40 degrees some days, every day without a decent bowl of food is one more worry..."
2. The dogs are getting thinner, fights have broken out and illness is spreading
"From cutting the portions over and over, it's starting to show. Some dogs stay by the bowl after they've emptied it, as if they're waiting for more. It's always the most fragile ones who show it first: they cope less well, a small infection sets in, an old dog who was doing better starts to go downhill again.
Hunger also makes the dogs edgier. The fights have started: a hungry dog fights over its bowl, it doesn't behave like a dog with a full belly anymore. And these fights leave dogs injured, wounds to disinfect, more care to give, when we already can't afford to pay the vet!
What we're afraid of is the vicious circle closing in: less kibble, weaker dogs, more injuries. And we've got dogs who have no margin left at all! Theodor hurt one of his legs and can't put any weight on it anymore, and Farghas has already had a leg amputated. For them, just a few days of going short can be enough to tip everything over..."
3. Saved from a fight, Varikyn won't heal without a full bowl
"Varikyn is seven, and he's been at the shelter for five years. We got him out of the public pound in Kurevo, where he was set to be put down. When I took him in, he was skin and bone! It took me months to get him back to strength and win back his trust.
Today, he's in danger again. He was attacked by another dog and has a nasty wound on his back. Every day, we give him his treatment and clean the wound to keep it from getting infected. But a wound doesn't heal on its own: to recover, a dog needs strength, and to have strength, he needs to eat properly, every day. And that's exactly what I'm short of right now.
Without kibble, his wound will drag on, maybe get infected, and he'll sink back into the state we found him in, gaunt and worn out. We already snatched Varikyn from death once. It's unbearable to watch him grow weak now for the want of a full bowl!"
4. The debts have reached 17,000 euros and the support is running dry: Armina has run out of options for buying kibble.
"It's getting harder and harder to provide everything the dogs need. The Italian association that used to support us is helping less and less, and without them, the debts have piled up at a frightening speed. We now owe nearly 12,000 euros just for the kibble, and another 5,000 euros to the vet. I don't see how we're ever going to pay all that back...
We've looked for help elsewhere, everywhere we could, to be honest, without getting a single positive answer. We even had to stop taking in new dogs, because we simply can't cope anymore, and yet people keep leaving them outside our gate. We do what we can with what we haven't got!
Life in a shelter is no fairy tale, and when the dogs start to run short of food, it's really hard. We're afraid we won't be able to give them even the bare minimum anymore, afraid they'll suffer..."
5. Armina isn't asking for money, only kibble to keep the dogs from starving to death.
"If I got involved, it's because I couldn't look the other way. Most of the dogs at the shelter were waiting for the needle in a public pound when we went to get them: they'd already been condemned! Today they sleep somewhere safe, and to me, that's what a victory is: a dog who was meant to die and gets another chance. A shelter should never be an end in itself, only a stop on the way to a real home. Every adoption reminds us of that and gives us back the strength to carry on.
But between the rescue and the adoption, there's the day to day, and that's what's crushing us right now. Feeding 700 dogs every day, disinfecting wounds, watching over the amputees and the disabled ones, the ones with the least chance of finding a family and who will probably stay here forever.
Personally, I can take the exhaustion, the debts, the constant worry. What I can't bear is the thought of watching them go hungry after everything they've already been through. That's why, and only why, I'm making this appeal."
6. If this campaign succeeds, Armina will not receive any money but 2,400 kg of kibble, delivered from Animal Webaction's logistics centre in Bosnia.
