1. In Morocco, Rokaya has almost no kibble left to feed the 177 dogs at her shelter. They could starve to death!
“Today, I have 177 dogs depending on me, and I only have three days’ worth of kibble left. Three days, no more. After that, I don’t know what I’m going to put in their bowls. I’ve already been rationing their food for an entire month, cutting everyone’s portions so that the little we have left will last a bit longer. I spend my days calculating, dividing, trying to put off the inevitable.
The hardest part is that there is no one left to turn to. Before, I could at least get a few bags from a supplier and pay later. Now, even that is over: no one is willing to give me credit anymore. My back is against the wall, with almost two hundred dogs waiting for their meal and nothing to prepare it with. The emergency is not tomorrow, it is here, right now.”
2. The dogs are losing weight, and fights break out at mealtimes
“You cannot hide a shortage of kibble for long, you can see it in the dogs. Some of them have already started losing weight, and I notice it every time I walk past them. They are no longer the same dogs they were a few weeks ago.
And then there is the tension. When the bowls are not full enough, the dogs can sense it, they become agitated, and fights break out. They are not bad dogs, hunger is what makes them act this way. I do what I can to separate them, to calm them down, but until they have enough to eat properly, it will continue.
And among them, five are currently sick or undergoing treatment. For them, food is not only a matter of hunger, it is a matter of recovery. A dog fighting an illness needs strength to keep going. I can rush them to the vet, pay for part of their treatment, but if I cannot even fill their bowls, how are they supposed to pull through?”
3. Barely ten months old and already unable to walk, Simba has only the shelter to help him survive
“Simba is only ten months old, he is still a baby. He was brought to me two months ago: the man who brought him explained that he had suffered from an illness that left him in this condition. Today, he can no longer walk, and he is undergoing treatment for mange.
Imagine a dog this young, who should be running around, burning off energy, playing, but instead finds himself unable to move, with damaged skin. His little body is fighting on every front at once. For him to have a chance of recovering, he needs to eat well and regain his strength day after day.
But because of the rationing, I cannot give him what he needs. A young dog in his condition, with a half-empty stomach, cannot recover. Simba depends entirely on me and the shelter to pull through, and without kibble, I do not know how he will survive.”
4. No more credit, and every bill coming due at once: Rokaya is at breaking point
“The stress never leaves me. Right now, it is the lack of kibble that is crushing me, but behind that, there is everything else that never stops. I have to pay my two employees, the electricity bill, the man who comes to collect the rubbish, and even the cats’ food. Everything comes due at once, and it all rests on my shoulders alone.
I juggle one expense after another, postponing whatever I can. But the dogs cannot wait: you cannot postpone hunger. And now that no supplier will give me credit anymore, I do not even have that breathing room. I have exhausted every solution I knew. It is an enormous burden to carry, and I carry it alone.”
5. Rokaya is not asking for money, only kibble to keep the dogs from starving to death.
“I have been running this shelter near Tetouan for more than nine years, alone, because there is no one else here for these dogs. I am their only safety net. They are what keeps me going: when I walk in each morning and they come towards me, I remember why I carry on despite everything.
But what weighs on me most is feeding them every day. Every morning, the same question comes back: will I have enough to feed them today? And there is this helplessness eating away at me. I can no longer find adopters for my dogs, so the shelter never empties. And the worst part is seeing other dogs outside who need help, and being unable to help them, not fully, and sometimes not even a little.
I am not asking for money! I am only asking for kibble, so that my dogs can eat and those who are sick have a chance of pulling through. That is all.”
