We cannot let the hundreds of dogs under Hind's care starve!

1. In Morocco, Hind has almost no kibble left to feed the 300 street dogs she looks after. They're at risk of starving to death!

"Out on the streets, there are still just as many counting on us, scattered across different neighbourhoods of Casablanca and the surrounding area. They know the car, they know our schedule, they're there before we even arrive. Except we only manage to get out two or three times a week, and with what I've got left, I don't even know if we'll be able to go next week. The rest of the time, they eat whatever they can find, bread, scraps, whatever people throw away. That's not what's going to keep them going.

And a dog that hasn't eaten doesn't stay put in its own neighbourhood... It wanders off, it looks elsewhere, it crosses roads, it goes digging through everything. And that's exactly where they catch it. The "Zero Stray Dogs 2030" programme is still going, there have been new round-ups in the areas where we feed these last few months, and it's getting worse and worse. Every round we can't do is a dog that will wander further away and might never come back.

Since the end of the holidays, the abandonments have exploded around Sidi Rahal, Berrechid, Dar Bouazza. These are family dogs people are leaving with us. Nursing mothers, still feeding their puppies, thrown out like rubbish. All these dogs have to be fed somehow..."

2. Weakened by hunger and eaten alive by fleas, several street dogs have already died.

"This end of summer has brought us to our knees, it really has. It's still very hot here. Out there, the dogs can't find water any more, they get dehydrated, they get weaker, they barely move. They just lie in the shade instead of going out to look for food. And with this heat, the parasites are a disaster. The fleas above all.

Several of the street dogs have died from it in the past few weeks... Dogs we knew, dogs that were waiting for us at their feeding spot. It wasn't some mysterious illness that took them, it was hunger, which stripped them of the last thing they had to defend themselves with.

The ones still hanging on, I run my hand over them and I feel the bones, the coat coming off in patches, the skin grey and ruined. Maxim, who I've been looking after in his neighbourhood for four years, is at that point now: mange and malnutrition at the same time. If we don't get kibble here very soon, I know exactly which dogs we won't be seeing again..."

3. At the shelter, Hind's 120 dogs have been on reduced rations for a month.

"At the shelter there are 120 of them, and they watch me arrive every morning. I've got a few days of kibble left, a week at most, and nothing behind it to restock. It's already been a month of rationing, a month of filling the bowls halfway and telling myself I'll hold on, that things will sort themselves out, that we'll find something. Except nothing sorts itself out.

There are so many mouths to feed here, and the numbers never go down. These last few months, around forty new dogs have come in, dogs in emergencies, dogs that had to be taken in straight away. We did manage to get some of them placed and I'm proud of that, those are stories that end well. But every time one leaves, the space is taken again the same day. Gastro, for example, we went and got him from the pound a month ago: he had mange and injuries from abuse, injuries somebody inflicted on him on purpose. We got him out of there, and today I can't manage to fill his bowl every day.

And we've lost dogs these past months, at the shelter and outside too. Old dogs, sick dogs, dogs that arrived already in a terrible state. We treated them, we paid the vet, we tried. Some of them arrive too late, that's just how it is. And every time I ask myself the same question: if he'd been eating properly, would he still be here? On top of all that, we had an infestation of fleas and eggs at the shelter, we had to treat everything, start all over again, with money I didn't have."

4. Eaten away by leishmaniasis, Wiza won't recover on an empty stomach.

"Wiza came to us a month ago. Someone reported her on our page, and we left straight away, we rushed to her rescue. When I saw her, honestly, it was a shock. Her legs raw, her body wasted away, the bones showing through the skin, and that look in her eyes that doesn't understand what's happening to her. She's three years old. Three years old, you know, at that age a dog should be running around everywhere. Her, she could barely stand up.

We started her on treatment for the mange, and then we realised there was something far worse: she has leishmaniasis. It's a disease that eats away at a dog from the inside, and apart from the medication there's only one thing that works against it, and that's eating well. I give her good quality kibble to build up her immune system, that's what's carrying her right now. Without that, the tablets won't do their job, her body will have nothing to fight with.

And that's where I'm stuck. I've got kibble for a few days, and after that I've got nothing. A dog on treatment who starts losing weight again goes backwards all at once, and everything we gained in a month is lost. Wiza survived the streets, she survived all of that. I don't want her to fade away here because the bag is empty."

5. Buried in debt, Hind has spent her own money down to nothing to feed them.

"Financially, we're at the end of the line. I've got bills hanging over me everywhere: the vet, the kibble supplier, the fuel, and the wages for my two employees that I can't manage to pay. Added up, it comes to somewhere around 2,500 euros of unpaid bills. To you that might not sound like much, but I've got nothing behind me, no savings, no subsidy, nobody. Here there's no foundation to help you, no help from the state, nothing. We run on donations, and the donations have gone down.

So I make choices I hate making: I put off treatment, I cancel a sterilisation, I scrape together whatever I can find. And these past few weeks, I've put my own money in again, for the food, for the care, for the emergencies, for this whole business with the fleas. The result is that everything I find goes to the vet and to the debts, and when the time comes to order sacks, there's nothing left.

And there's my health too, I have to say it. I've got a heart condition, and I've got fibromyalgia. The physical work I used to do myself, I have to hand over to others now, I can't manage it any more. But I haven't let go: I organise the rescues, the care, the shelter, the feeding rounds. What people don't see is the worry that never leaves you, that thing going round and round in your head: what am I feeding them with tomorrow, what am I feeding them with next week."

6. Hind isn't asking for money, only for kibble so the dogs don't starve to death.

"I've been fighting for the dogs of my country for years now, and I've never once managed to look the other way. Here, a stray dog, to a lot of people, is nothing. You chase it off, you hit it, you poison it, you have it taken away. Me, I see something else. I see Maxim who's been waiting for me in his neighbourhood for four years, Zoro who's finally accepting my hand after six months, Wiza getting a bit of her strength back every week. They're what keeps me going, not big ideas.

But I won't lie to you, it's heavy. When the dogs need us, you can't explain to them that we've got constraints, that we haven't got the means. You don't say that to a dog. On our last round, we didn't have enough for everyone...

The hardest part isn't the driving, or the tiredness, or the fuel we have to find every single time. It's the moment you get back in the car. Because some of them are left with nothing. They don't leave, they keep on waiting, just in case. They watch us drive away. And I know they'll stay like that until our next visit, in two or three days. It's so I don't have to live through that again that I'm asking for help today!"
