1. In Serbia, Danijela has almost no kibble left to feed the 78 dogs in her shelter. They could starve to death!

%%%

"I have 78 dogs at the shelter today, and the kibble I have left won't even last a week. After that, I have nothing: no reserves, no delivery on the way. I've been rationing for three weeks already, and I buy a few bags at a time, whenever I manage to scrape together a bit of money. What I give them is barely enough to take the edge off their hunger until the next day...

And while the kibble runs down, there are more and more dogs. This summer, I took in 2 females with 5 puppies each. Mila was abandoned on the road up to the shelter with her newborn pups. She's still nursing them, but she isn't eating enough: I can see her wearing herself out...

That's ten more puppies to feed, on top of all the adults. Donations are falling, the bags are gone almost as soon as they arrive, and I don't know how I'm going to fill all those bowls in a few days' time..."

2. The shelter dogs are losing weight and fights have started breaking out around the bowls.

###

"My dogs have lost weight. After several weeks of rationing, it shows: some have hollower flanks and less energy. And when I come with the food, they already know there won't be enough to fill them up.

So the tension builds around the bowls. They watch each other, they shove, and fights break out, at the shelter just as much as at the rubbish dump where I feed the strays. When they're hungry, things can turn very quickly.

Then I have to treat the injuries, when I already have vet debts I can't settle! It's a vicious circle: the less kibble I have, the more they fight; the more they fight, the higher the bills. And I have no room left to manoeuvre."

3. Crni is only six months old, thin and anaemic: without enough kibble, the iron Danijela gives him every day is not enough.

###

"Crni is only six months old. I found him on the street, dumped by the side of the road. He was covered in ticks and parasites, so tiny and so filthy that I could barely tell what colour his coat really was. I brought him back to the shelter and treated him.

Today, he can stand on his own, but he is still very thin and anaemic. He doesn't have the weight or strength a puppy his age should have. I give him iron every day to try to improve his blood count, but without proper nutrition, his body simply can't recover the way it should.

At six months old, while he's still growing, that worries me enormously. He is growing, but not the way he should, and I'm afraid he may suffer the consequences for the rest of his life..."

4. At the Kraljevo rubbish dump, dozens more dogs survive only thanks to Danijela's rounds.

%%%

"Outside the shelter, I feed stray dogs regularly. Most of them live at the rubbish dump. They have no kennels, no straw, no shelter: all they have is what I bring them, at the spot where I know I'll find them.

And their numbers are growing. Abandonments are sharply up in our area. People, and sometimes even the pounds in the surrounding towns, keep dumping dogs on us. They drop them off and drive away. The dogs end up joining the packs at the dump, and that's more mouths to feed on top of the rest...

There's Tobi, for example. Four years old. A lorry knocked him down in the street and the impact damaged a nerve in his leg. He still can't put that paw down, and he may never be able to. So of course, on three legs, he's at a disadvantage, and far more dependent on me. Except that with what I can give him at the moment, I'm only just keeping him from losing weight, I'm not helping him build up any strength..."

5. Danijela has been dipping into her own wages for months, and is having to turn away the dogs people report to her.

###

"For several months now, I've been taking money out of my own wages to buy kibble. It isn't money I have to spare: it's money that's missing somewhere else.

The failure of our last campaign has made these past few months particularly hard. I've looked for help everywhere I could: I've put out appeals on Facebook, asked for support from people around me, gone round the shops collecting stale bread. But those are only stopgaps, and they've had very limited success, while the dogs have to eat every single day!

Over these past months I've taken in 16 dogs, but only 7 have been adopted. More come in than go out, so I'm having to start saying no. A few days ago, a female dog was found with a badly injured eye. I paid for her operation, even though I already have more than €200 in vet debts I can't clear. But I couldn't go any further. Normally I'd have taken her into the shelter as well; this time I had to give up, because I can no longer feed all the ones who are already here..."

6. Danijela isn't asking for money, only for kibble, so that the dogs don't starve to death.

###

"It all started in 2011 with a single dog. A retriever I found outside, beaten and hit by a car, his spine fractured, with large open wounds. I named him Spaske. We got him back on his feet and he learned to move around again with a cart. He died two years later. I gave his name to my organisation, and I've never stopped since.

In fifteen years, I've mostly taken in the ones nobody wanted: the injured, the sick, the ones who had no chance of surviving outside. Many have been with me for seven or eight years and will never be adopted. They'll stay here to the end, that's what I owe them.

Today, all of these dogs depend on what I manage to put in their bowls. I'm on my own feeding them, treating them and keeping the shelter running day after day. And I can't keep up any more..."
