In Serbia, Zvezdana's shelter no longer has any kibble for its 40 dogs, she begs us to help her!

Helpless with an empty food storage, Zvezdana called us for help a few days ago.

We went to her shelter on Sunday, March 24.

During our visit, we saw how difficult the situation is: the shelter lacks everything!

Living on a meagre retirement pension, Zvezdana can no longer afford to buy kibble.

Deeply affected, she fears that she will no longer be able to protect them.

We wanted to help them by sending him 1 500 kg of kibble as soon as possible.

100% transparency guaranteed

1. We went to the shelter on March 24th: Zvezdana begged us to help her, she no longer has any food for her 40 dogs!

When we came on March 24th, our reporter Suzana was confronted with an empty food storage: the only remaining kibble were kept in these two plastic bags, weighing around 8kg altogether

Zvezdana manages to collect bones from a butcher a few kilometres from her home, which she gives to dogs in the absence of kibble

Our reporter Suzana went to the shelter on March 24th, following a call for help from Zvezdana, the president of the association "We urgently need food, we have no more food" she told us then

On the spot, Suzana noticed that there was a tiny amount of kibble left, which Zvezdana was trying to distribute among all the dogs hosted at the shelter.... The only comfort then was the bones donated by a local butcher, which allowed the dogs to forget their hunger....

2. Makeshift kennels, medical care on standby, resourcefulness... As we have seen, Zvezdana and her shelter lack everything.

Because she does not have a shelter that can accommodate all dogs, Zvezdana has set up makeshift kennels in several different places

Some of the dogs are hosted in an abandoned house, located 8km from Zvezdana's home, where they can take shelter

Every day, Zvezdana travels tens of kilometres by bike to take care of them: it is impossible for her to own a car, she doesn't have enough money...

Sheet metal, scraps of fabric, boards and various materials: Zvezdana does her best to arrange the premises and make the dogs' lives more comfortable, but has very few resources to do so...

Found wandering with a broken leg, Kala was unable to move. Although she recovered, her leg cannot be repaired, Kala must be amputated: but Zvezdana does not have the resources to finance the surgery for now...

For 18 years, Zvezdana has been working through her association for abandoned animals in Serbia, but with extremely limited resources:

"To us, each animal has right to live. In our shelter we have disabled and old animals who need special care and special food we aren't always able to provide"

Today, Zvezdana affords all the necessary medical treatments herself (the shelter has 30% elderly dogs, but also sick and disabled ones), and also pays 80% of the food costs. A financial abyss, which she can no longer fill...

3. Zvezdana lives on a retirement pension alone: she can't buy kibble!

Zvezdana is now retired, and receives only a meagre pension. Because she cannot afford a car, she travels exclusively by bike: her round trips between the various places where the dogs are hosted represent tens of kilometres a day...

Because she is already saving money by all possible means to keep her head above water, Zvezdana does not see how to solve her current difficulties: she can no longer afford to buy kibble! The only solution is to go deeper into debt, which would then jeopardize the association itself, and the protection of dogs...

4. Zvezdana is fighting for them, we need to help them all

Paralyzed from the rear axle after a fall of several meters, Lola was treated by Zvezdana for many months. Her spine cannot be operated on: Lola will never walk as before, but has learned to move differently

Left outside permanently, attached to a one-metre-long chain, Mara was covered with ticks and suffering from a parasitic disease when she was brought to Zvezdana. She remains traumatized and flees from any human presence

Tofi is an old dog, abandoned by his owners to Zvezdana when he became blind.... He is easily disoriented because of his age and disability

Mica was being abused by children when she was rescued: several of them were having fun throwing her up in the air time after time... Mica took a long time to recover, and is still easily frightened

Abused by his former landlord, Leo was very skinny and scared when he arrived. He has managed to regain his strength at the shelter, but remains frightened by the human presence

Arrived when she was just a puppy, weak and stunted, Cica has been at the shelter for 10 years now

Dzoni was hit by a car on the highway and was in critical condition when he was rescued. He recovered from his injuries and fractures, and has been at the shelter for 3 years now

5. If the collection fails, the dogs won't receive any food

A failed collection on Animal Webaction

We can take action, we have already booked a truck and pallets for 1 500 kg, but we have to pay it before 01/04/2019.

If the collection fails, we will not be able to pay, the departure of the truck will be cancelled and none of the collected food will be delivered...

If the collection fails, we will refund all donors.

6. The only regular help Zvezdana gets comes from foreign associations comes from Denmark. But the partner association can't buy more than a week's worth of kibble!

Every month, Zvezdana receives about 100 kilos of kibble (the equivalent of a week's worth of food) thanks to a Danish association, which shows unfailing support. However, this association is the only one to provide regular assistance to the shelter, which is largely insufficient in relation to the needs of the 40 dogs hosted:

"Zvezdana is the most amazing person I have met. I have an animal protection in Denmark and we give her 100 kg feed every month. I know her heart beats for the dogs, and she gives the dogs before she even gets her food herself" said Tina, President of the association when we contacted her.

7. In Serbia, 100,000 street dogs are hunted down by dogcatchers to be killed, or left to die in filthy pounds

Dogcatchers trapping a dog in an insensitive way... in the indifference of passers-by

It is estimated that Serbia has about 100,000 stray dogs. Private companies were commissioned in 2012 to catch these dogs: their dogcatchers (the name given to the employees responsible for the capture) have been operating throughout the country since then.

Receiving financial incentives for each dog caught, dogcatchers hunt dogs relentlessly, and use extremely violent techniques. Many dogs are killed, the others end up crammed into filthy pounds, wand left to die ithout care nor food.

Volunteers believe that their actions, in addition to being cruel, do not have a beneficial impact on the volume of stray dogs in the country. Worse still, they greatly undermine the beneficial actions that have existed until now: the subsidies allocated since 2007 as part of a vast national sterilization program have been drastically cut, despite encouraging results when they were carried out....

8. For Zvezdana, dogs always come first

Zvezdana, petting and hugging the dogs at the shelter

Involved in animal protection for years, Zvezdana suffers a lot from the current situation, and seemed very affected during our visit.

Saddened, and extremely stressed, she must worry every day about the meal she will be able to offer, or not, to the dogs she rescued....

"It's very hard for her. She sacrificed her own life for the dogs. Those who are in difficult situation and scared, sleep with her in her house, some of them in her bed. 24 hours doggys have her attention. She does not go on vacation. She rests when her doggys rest. The dogs are Zvezdana's life.", Suzana told us on the way home.

9. What will the collected kibble be used for?

If the collection succeeds, the XXX kg collected will be used to feed the 40 dogs gathered by Zvezdana for several weeks.
