Animal Webaction visited the site 27 April 2019 and confirms the situation described below.

In Morocco, this shelter of 400 dogs is out of kibble, they will all starve to death!

We received a distress call from the ADAN shelter in Morocco, our team went to the site on April 27th.

We discovered a catastrophic situation, the kibble stock is exhausted, there were only 4 bags left when we visited!

In Morocco, there is no help for animals, few people care, many stay on the streets to die, hungry, sick...

We must save the ADAN shelter which is a hope for all these animals.

We want to urgently send a truck of 4000 kg of kibble to the shelter.

If the collection fails the truck will not be able to leave.

100% transparency guaranteed

1. The shelter no longer has any kibble for its 400 dogs: skinny and weakened by their diet, they will all die!

###
Infested with parasites and suffering from a tumour when she arrived, Sinta was treated by the volunteers. But her health remains fragile, and suffers from the forced diet: Sinta is very thin

###
Hope arrived at the shelter 2 months ago and was suffering from malnutrition and several skin diseases. The care provided by the volunteers is paying off, but food is the key to his recovery: Hope is only a few months old, he needs kibble

###
When she arrived from the pound, Dina suffered from several wounds and skin conditions, which had been healed. Unfortunately, due to her diet and the high number of dogs at the shelter, Dina's skin problems have resurfaced, and treatments haven't been successful so far

###
The association's volunteers do their best to feed the dogs every day, and distribute the food. But with 400 dogs, the task is colossal

The association has been having great difficulty buying food for several weeks now.... Because dog food is too expensive, volunteers are forced to feed the dogs mainly with rice, mixed with meat when finances allow it.

The quantities provided are too small, and the diet too poor in nutrients: digestive problems, skin diseases, weight loss and parasitic diseases are developing!

2. We were at the shelter on April 27th: the food was exhausted, there were only 4 and a half bags of kibble left.

###
When we came, only 4.5 bags of kibble remained at the shelter, the equivalent of 90 kg of kibble: it doesn't even cover a meal!

Because kibble is too expensive, volunteers prepare rice and mix it with a little meat.  But during our visit, even the bags of rice were exhausted, there was nothing left...

###
Ahmed manages to buy bread scraps at low cost that are distributed to the dogs, to allow them to overcome hunger....

Volunteers are forced to live day by day, hoping to still be able to buy food the one after...

An extremely difficult situation for them and particularly for Ahmed, President of the association.

3. The shelter is completly full, and the lack of food exacerbates tensions: volunteers struggle every day to prevent dogs fights

###
Located in a former municipal building, the shelter has very few enclosures, and was not designed to accommodate so many dogs

###
Several people are systematically present during feeding, to intervene in case of a fight. Vigilance is constant, and the most dominant dogs are kept on a leash to limit the risks

###
Ahmed and the other volunteers did their best to arrange the available space, allowing the dogs to sleep on pallets most of the time

###
Some dogs also benefit from recovered or donated transport cages, but in insufficient quantities

###
Unfortunately, there is not enough equipment for the 400 dogs: promiscuity is maximum

Housed in a former municipal building, the shelter was not designed to accommodate so many dogs, and is in poor condition. Without cages, dogs must be welcomed in packs, and constant vigilance is required:

"We have to be very careful with new arrivals or some former dominant dogs, we try to avoid this kind of fighting by feeding two large groups ( packs) separately," Ahmed tells us.

The rarer the food is, the harder it is to channel fights: they need kibble!

4. ADAN is the only reason dogs are protected from slaughter in Rabat: we must help them!

Since July 2018, thanks to a partnership between ADAN and the municipality of Rabat, no more dogs are killed: when captured, street dogs are brought to the shelter

###
In the long term, the dogs will be able to be released into the streets of Rabat, after having been neutered and vaccinated, without risking slaughter: this is the objective pursued by Ahmed. But the process is long, he has to find solutions to cope with the massive influx of dogs to the shelter

In other regions of Morocco, slaughter continues to take place frequently: animal advocates try as best they can to shelter street dogs when a deadline is known

Since July 2018, all street dogs captured by the municipality in Rabat have been brought to the ADAN shelter, which has seen its population increase to 400 dogs in a few months. This partnership is the only element that protects Rabat's street dogs from outright slaughter...

With an estimated population of around 2 million street dogs, Morocco has been carrying out mass slaughter operations at regular intervals for decades. Dogs are poisoned with strychnine, or shot with a gun, when their presence becomes too much of a problem for authorities.

Thanks to ADAN, Rabat is in the process of launching a neutering program (TNR), consisting of capturing, neutering and vaccinating dogs, before releasing them onto the streets where they will no longer be slaughtered. We must help them to continue!

5. If we don't reach the target, dogs won't receive any food

A failed collection on Animal Webaction

We can come into action, we have already booked a truck and pallets, but we have to pay it before Wednesday May 8.

If the collection fails, we will not be able to pay, the departure of the truck will be cancelled and none of the collected kibbles will be delivered...

If the collection fails, we will refund all donors.

6. Over indebted with all its suppliers, the association can no longer buy kibble!

For several weeks now, the association has been using a lot of rice to feed its dogs, as it is one of the cheapest and most satisfying products. But today it has 1500€ of debts with the supplier, who regularly refuses to give them credit

The association has launched various appeals for help, which have so far led to only small isolated donations....

###
Every day, Ahmed is torn by the fear of no longer being able to feed his dogs, and of seeing the whole project long set up with the municipality fall through

With a debt of €3,000 to its suppliers, the association is in a deadlock: it is unable to settle its debts or even stop them.

As a result, she can only obtain small quantities, and lives in fear that credit will be denied to them day after day... Too expensive, kibble can no longer be bought.

7. Without any grant, ADAN only receives one-off assistance from one international foundation, it cannot get by on without help

While the municipality provides the premises free of charge to host the shelter, it does not provide any subsidy to the association: Ahmed has to manage for all the finances.

The Brigitte Bardot Foundation has been a crucial support of ADAN for several years, but only covers 10% of the shelter's total expenses.

Ahmed and his sister have already sold their possessions to finance the shelter, and no longer have any room for manoeuvre to date, they are up against it.

8. We need to help them

###
Pita arrived at the shelter a year and a half ago, her ears had been cut off without any medical care, a practice designed to make her more aggressive

###
Hit by a car, Linda was suffering from several injuries when she reached the shelter, and almost lost one of her legs. ADAN-funded care and the patience of the volunteers helped to heal her

###
Brought back from the pound a week before our visit, Chopinou was abandoned by its owners. Disoriented and frightened, he is struggling to get used to it for the moment

###
Out of the pound the week of our visit, Carpette was kept there pregnant: her birth began in the association's truck... Skinny and frightened, she will not be able to breastfeed her young while malnourished herself

###
Rita was only one month old when she was abandoned: bottle-fed for several weeks, she almost succumbed to a virus but managed to survive

###
Having left the pound 3 years ago, accompanied by the litter she had just given birth to, Hermione was only skin and bones. While her health has improved, new skin problems have recently emerged, related to her forced diet

###
A victim of prolonged abuse, Winkou suffered from several infections, and had to have one eye and one of his legs removed when he joined the shelter

###
Former police dog, Hank was taken to the shelter to avoid being euthanized after being reformed, a practice that was still in use in Rabat not long ago. He suffers from motor disorders, as well as hearing and vision problems

###
Abused and abandoned by his former owners, Clyde had his throat cut by the rope that held him in place when he arrived. He keeps physical and psychological traumas, which the volunteers try to heal little by little

###
Abused and having contracted distemper, Mixa was difficult to cure. She is still extremely traumatized by her early life, although she has been in the shelter for a year now

###
Called Miracle because her survival was very compromised when she arrived, Miracle suffered heavy abuse. She suffered from a haemorrhage and was in a serious condition: she also had various traces of burning and abuse on her body....

###
Caramella left the pound with very advanced scabies 6 months ago and has made great progress, which could be countered by the lack of food

###
Abandoned following an accident, Max has a deformed leg: broken in the past and untreated, it didn't heal well and can no longer be repaired

9. Ahmed invests himself body and soul in the shelter, but lives in constant fear

Ahmed with one of the puppies from the shelter, who currently has about 30 puppies

President of the association for several years, Ahmed has invested himself body and soul in the fight for stray animals in Morocco (many cats are also rescued by the association), alongside his sister.

He has never been so close to achieving his objective, namely the success of a neutering program that could open up new perspectives for stray animals in Morocco. Yet he has never been so worried about seeing things fall through so close to the goal....

Between the needs related to the shelter, the task of raising public awareness, and the permanent fear that the animals sheltered  will find themselves without anything, Ahmed faces a panic every day against which he tries to fight.

We must help him out!

11. What will the 4 000 kg collected be used for ?

If the collection succeeds, the 4000 kg collected will be delivered to the ADAN association, represented by Ahmed. It will then be used to feed the 400 dogs in the association's care.
