Animal Webaction visited the site 27 April 2019 and confirms the situation described below.
In Morocco, this shelter of 400 dogs is out of kibble, they will all starve to death!
We received a distress call from the ADAN shelter in Morocco, our team went to the site on April 27th.
We discovered a catastrophic situation, the kibble stock is exhausted, there were only 4 bags left when we visited!
In Morocco, there is no help for animals, few people care, many stay on the streets to die, hungry, sick...
We must save the ADAN shelter which is a hope for all these animals.
We want to urgently send a truck of 4000 kg of kibble to the shelter.
If the collection fails the truck will not be able to leave.
The association has been having great difficulty buying food for several weeks now.... Because dog food is too expensive, volunteers are forced to feed the dogs mainly with rice, mixed with meat when finances allow it.
The quantities provided are too small, and the diet too poor in nutrients: digestive problems, skin diseases, weight loss and parasitic diseases are developing!
Volunteers are forced to live day by day, hoping to still be able to buy food the one after...
An extremely difficult situation for them and particularly for Ahmed, President of the association.
Housed in a former municipal building, the shelter was not designed to accommodate so many dogs, and is in poor condition. Without cages, dogs must be welcomed in packs, and constant vigilance is required:
"We have to be very careful with new arrivals or some former dominant dogs, we try to avoid this kind of fighting by feeding two large groups ( packs) separately," Ahmed tells us.
The rarer the food is, the harder it is to channel fights: they need kibble!
Since July 2018, all street dogs captured by the municipality in Rabat have been brought to the ADAN shelter, which has seen its population increase to 400 dogs in a few months. This partnership is the only element that protects Rabat's street dogs from outright slaughter...
With an estimated population of around 2 million street dogs, Morocco has been carrying out mass slaughter operations at regular intervals for decades. Dogs are poisoned with strychnine, or shot with a gun, when their presence becomes too much of a problem for authorities.
Thanks to ADAN, Rabat is in the process of launching a neutering program (TNR), consisting of capturing, neutering and vaccinating dogs, before releasing them onto the streets where they will no longer be slaughtered. We must help them to continue!
We can come into action, we have already booked a truck and pallets, but we have to pay it before Wednesday May 8.
If the collection fails, we will not be able to pay, the departure of the truck will be cancelled and none of the collected kibbles will be delivered...
If the collection fails, we will refund all donors.
With a debt of €3,000 to its suppliers, the association is in a deadlock: it is unable to settle its debts or even stop them.
As a result, she can only obtain small quantities, and lives in fear that credit will be denied to them day after day... Too expensive, kibble can no longer be bought.
While the municipality provides the premises free of charge to host the shelter, it does not provide any subsidy to the association: Ahmed has to manage for all the finances.
The Brigitte Bardot Foundation has been a crucial support of ADAN for several years, but only covers 10% of the shelter's total expenses.
Ahmed and his sister have already sold their possessions to finance the shelter, and no longer have any room for manoeuvre to date, they are up against it.
President of the association for several years, Ahmed has invested himself body and soul in the fight for stray animals in Morocco (many cats are also rescued by the association), alongside his sister.
He has never been so close to achieving his objective, namely the success of a neutering program that could open up new perspectives for stray animals in Morocco. Yet he has never been so worried about seeing things fall through so close to the goal....
Between the needs related to the shelter, the task of raising public awareness, and the permanent fear that the animals sheltered will find themselves without anything, Ahmed faces a panic every day against which he tries to fight.
We must help him out!
If the collection succeeds, the 4000 kg collected will be delivered to the ADAN association, represented by Ahmed. It will then be used to feed the 400 dogs in the association's care.
- Animal Webaction has been helping more than 833 animal welfare associations over the past 5 years, with more than 1,967 deliveries in 8 countries (see photos).
