Animal Webaction visited the site 28 May 2019 and confirms the situation described below.

In Romania, Gabriela's shelter has no more kibble for her disabled dogs, they will starve!

Following an SOS received, we went on May 28 at the shelter, it is a disaster the stock of kibbles is soon exhausted.

Gabriela collects many disabled, amputee, injured dogs ... Gabriela is their only hope.

Town hall, international foundations, nobody wants to intervene ... A small German association tries but its fundraisers do not succeed.

We are the last hope to save these dogs by sending a truck of 3,000 kg of kibbles!

If the collection fails, no kibble could be delivered.

1. The food stock is running low, Gabriela will soon have nothing left to feed her handicapped dogs

###
Hit by a car, Lolita was thrown into the garbage like a piece of waste.... Gabriela rescued her, and taught her how to move around with a trolley, despite the amputation of her two hind legs

###
SSeriously injured by a car mid-April, Bobby Bee had to have part of his hind legs amputated. Thanks to Gabriela, he has already learnt how to move around with a trolley

###
Chained up on an abandoned field, where no one had come to see her for a long time, Liah was only skin and bones when she was rescued in early May. Her condition has already improved significantly, but Liah remains vulnerable due to all the hardships she has experienced

###
Affected by distemper when he was still a puppy, Bruno stayed paralyzed for 6 months. He is now walking again without a trolley thanks to Gabriela's work

###
Victim of a car accident like many of the shelter's dogs, Acino remains paralyzed from the rear axle. He moves most of the time with a trolley

###
Hit by a car when she was only 6 months old, Alex has been living at the shelter since January. Unfortunately, her spine was damaged, Alex will remain paralyzed for life

###
Scared by dogcatchers, Pengy was hit by a car while trying to escape. Despite attempts at treatment, Pengy's injuries are not treatable, he remains disabled from the rear axle

###
Rescued only a few days ago, Ceki has a broken neck, and is currently paralyzed. Gabriela provides the best care possible

###
Marco did not reach the shelter until early May, following a car accident. His spine was broken during the impact, and Marco will not be able to regain the use of his rear axle. Gabriela helps him to move again with a trolley

###
At the shelter since mid-May, Jacky also has a broken spine: he is paralyzed with the whole rear axle. As for the many other dogs in his case, Gabriela handles his rehabilitation herself, as well as the training of walking with a trolley

###
At the shelter since last fall, Cristi was only 8 months old when he was hit by a car, leaving him partially paralyzed

###
During our visit on May 28th, there were only 150 kg of kibbles left to feed the 110 dogs in the shelter, as well as some canned food. A meagre stock that will only last a few days, a particularly worrying situation for the many disabled and fragile dogs who live in the shelter

Gabriela's shelter currently hosts 110 dogs, with an important specificity: the majority of them suffer from disabilities, due to accidents or disabling diseases.

Already weakened, these dogs are more sensitive to deprivation, and their health deteriorates much more easily: Gabriela cannot ration them, and even less go on without food!

2. We went on site on May 28th, following Gabriela's call for help :  she is worried about her dogs

###
For more than 3 years, Gabriela has been doing her best to take the best care of the dogs she rescued: no longer being able to feed them is unthinkable for her, and a strong source of concern

###
Our agent David spent time with the dogs hosted, as well as with Gabriela, to assess the situation

On May 28, our agent David went to meet Gabriela, who had warned us that her kibble stock was running out.

He accompanied her in her daily life, met the 110 dogs in her care, and had a long talk with Gabriela, who was very worried about her dogs...

3. Gabriela has already used up all her savings; the donations she receives only cover a small part of the expenses: she cannot buy kibble on her own

###
Particularly fragile, disabled dogs were unable to survive in precarious conditions: the winter of 2017 was fatal for many of them.... To ensure their survival, Gabriela has since invested all her savings in the construction of buildings and the purchase of equipment to keep them warm and safe

###
The shelter has 2 washing machines, which have been out of order for several months already... Without money to repair or replace them, Gabriela has to wash dozens of blankets and towels by hand every day: they are essential for the care of disabled dogs

Gabriela's shelter has been existing for 3 years, but she only had the buildings and indoor enclosures built in 2017, following a particularly harsh winter:

"This winter was very difficult, many dogs died because of the snow. I sheltered as many as I could at home, but it wasn't enough."

Gabriela hoped that the work could be financed by donations, but her appeals covered only 25% of the costs. So she used all her savings to finish the construction: she now has nothing left to feed the dogs!

4. No one wants to care for disabled dogs: Gabriela has to do everything on her own, she can't have a job

Gabriela is alone to provide care and rehabilitation for disabled dogs. As soon as their health allows it, each of them is equipped with a trolley to allow them to move again: training is essential to learn how to use it

###
For their safety, disabled dogs spend the night in cages. Every morning, Gabriela sets up their cart for them, then removes them every night before bedtime

###
Gabriela provides most of the standard medical care herself: she makes sure every day that none of the dogs are injured, takes care of everyone to avoid bedsores etc....

For 20 years, Gabriela held a managerial position in a large company. But caring for disabled dogs at the shelter takes a lot of time and self-sacrifice, Gabriela can't find anyone to help her:

"I'm with my puppies all day. From 7am to 6pm. I personally deal with those with disabilities. Unfortunately, I can not find someone to help me. People do not take too much shit. Not from the puppies. But I can handle it. Because I love them"

Only one person has agreed to work at the shelter three times a week: but Gabriela has to pay her a salary for this, and make the trips between her home and the shelter, which is 1 hour's drive every day! Gabriela has been forced to resign, and knows that she will not be able to find a job compatible with her commitment.

5. Only a small association regularly helps Gabriela, international foundations do not intervene

Carmen (left), President of the Sammelstelle für Tiere in Not e.V. association, and Steffi (right) go to Gabriela's shelter 3 to 4 times a year

For 3 years, the Sammelstelle Für Tiere in Not e.v association has been supporting Gabriela's shelter as much as it can, mainly for adoptions, and sometimes for a little food when it can, which is still very insufficient:

"We are a little registered organisation. It is not possible to help Gabriela with more food. But if times are hard like yet,we try to collect money for her food. But it doesn’t work good! And it is not enough "

In May, Gabriela received a one-time donation from another German association: a precious help that has allowed her to keep up so far, but the stock will soon be finished!

6. If we don't reach the target, dogs won't receive anything

A failed collection on Animal Webaction

We can come into action, we have already booked a truck and pallets, but we have to pay it before June 02.

If the collection fails, we will not be able to pay, the departure of the truck will be cancelled and none of the collected kibbles will be delivered...

If the collection fails, we will refund all donors.

7. Gabriela is exhausted, her health is affected by the intensive pace at the shelter and constant worry

###
CEvery day, Gabriela carries heavy loads repeatedly, to handle dogs, equipment or even kibble bags. A very physical work that involves permanent back pain. She also has a thyroid dysfunction that makes every task more difficult, and she is very tired

The laundry washed by hand several times a day, and all the manipulations Gabriela carries out have caused chronic arthritis in her hands: the suffering is permanent

Sporty for years, Gabriela started the shelter with great physical fitness, and a lot of energy to spare.

But the pace of caring for disabled dogs is very high, both physically and morally. Gabriela suffers from chronic pain in her hands and back, related to the many manipulations she performs every day.

She also has a thyroid disorder that makes her very tired, but it is impossible for her to spare herself: the dogs in the shelter only have her!

8. Last year alone, nearly 130 dogs were adopted thanks to Gabriela: we must help her to continue

Elderly and blind, Sunshine was locked up in the municipal pound, in which he had no chance of survival. Thanks to Gabriela and the support of Sammelstelle für Tiere in Not e.V., he is one of the last adopted in Germany (May 2019)

Rescued with his sister when he was only a few months old, Kuki was adopted in May 2019. Her sister Pikita was also adopted earlier in Holland

Abandoned by the veterinarian when he became ill, Logan was taken care of by Gabriela. Healed and recovered, he was adopted in April in Germany, after just over a year spent at the shelter

Steph and Labina were just puppies when they were found by Gabriela: taken into shelter for 2 years, they have just been adopted in Germany (May 2019)

Found in the street, covered with parasites, Fiete was healed and cared for by Gabriela before being adopted

Gabriela is so involved in the shelter because she firmly believes that it is possible to give these dogs a second chance, to allow them to have a better life.

In 2017, 96 dogs found a family through his efforts to heal them and find them a family; in 2018, 130 dogs got adopted, and adoptions still go on this year.

9.  The plight of stray dogs in Romania

10. For them, Gabriela gave up everything

###
Gabriela and some of the dogs hosted at the shelter

Gabriela has always tried to help others, whether they are humans or animals. She has been rescuing stray animals since childhood, and has also been involved with orphans for nearly 15 years.

With the creation of her shelter, her commitment took on a new dimension:

"I never know what day it is. I haven't had a day off in three years, I never go anywhere. This is the life I have chosen. It's a different life, but I'm surrounded by love. It's not a sacrifice, it's a way of life. My only fear is to get sick. Who would take care of them? Who would feed them, who would maintain them?"

11. What will the 3000 kg collected be used for ?

This collection is organised by the Sammelstelle für Tiere in Not e.V. association. The 3000 kg of dry dog food collected will be delivered to Gabriela to feed the 110 dogs hosted at the shelter.
