Oliviu's shelter is facing a new food shortage, his 260 dogs will starve to death!

Following a call from Oliviu, we went to the shelter on July 8th.

At the time of our visit, there were only 60 kg of kibbles left, a piddling amount for 260 dogs.

The shelter hosts many elderly dogs, already weakened by the deprivation they experienced during the last food shortage.

In debt, Oliviu cannot afford to buy more kibbles, and struggles to find other sources of food.

We want to help them, by sending 3000 kg of kibble as a matter of urgency.

100% transparency guaranteed

1. The many elderly dogs in the shelter are too vulnerable to survive malnutrition, they need kibble!

Oliviu has already experienced the loss of two elderly dogs from the shelter recently.... Ursu died of unknown causes

Nova is over 10 years old, and suffers from a chronic skin disease that Oliviu is struggling to control. Nova has little chance of being adopted, and relies every day on the food brought by Oliviu

Rescued from the municipal pound, Oldy already has a lot of problems, in addition to his old age. He suffers from testicular cancer and parasitic disease, both of which require simultaneous treatment

Former street dog, Bruno was regularly abused and could not keep living there at his age. He is now about 12 years old and struggles to move around

One of the eldest at the shelter, Crazy has a very difficult character that prevents him from being adopted. The shelter is for him the only chance to end his life peacefully

Oldie is over 12 years old, and has suffered for a long time from a parasitic disease that Oliviu has struggled to cure

Last April, the Animal Webaction community rallied to send 4800 kg of kibble to the shelter. But the stock is now exhausted, there were only 6 bags left during our visit on July 8th

The association now hosts 260 dogs, divided between two shelters. Among them, many dogs are over 10 years old, and often suffer from various diseases that make them vulnerable.

The Animal Webaction community rallied last April to help them at the height of the food shortage by sending 4800 kg of kibble. But all the dogs had to be rationed before our intervention, including the seniors...

When we visited Oliviu on July 8th, there were only 60 kg of kibbles left: we must avoid a new shortage for them.

2. Oliviu cooks soups made from chicken skins and various leftovers and to make dog food last longer, but that's not enough without kibbles

Oliviu spends a lot of energy to get new food sources, and thus make the kibble stock last longer. But without kibbles, 70% of food need are not covered!

A large part of the products collected by Oliviu is made of chicken skins, provided by a local butcher. While it is a very useful supplement, chicken skins cannot be the basis for feeding dogs....

Before our intervention last April, the dogs were already rationed and subjected to malnutrition. They have only known a few months of respite, we must at all costs help Oliviu to prevent this from happening again

Following our intervention, Oliviu managed to set up new local partnerships, which now allow him to collect chicken skins as well as some varied remains to supplement the kibbles.

This precious help allowed him to make the dog food we had sent him last longer than expected, but cannot be self-sufficient: it represents at best only 30% of the necessary supplies for the dogs!

3. In debt, Oliviu cannot afford to buy a new stock of kibble

Since our last collection, more than fifteen dogs have been taken in at the shelter, including several puppies. Vaccinations and preventive treatments were essential to contain the parvovirus epidemic that lasted several months, and that of dirofilariasis, a contagious parasitic disease that affects several dogs at the shelter already

With 260 dogs to care for, the costs increase very quickly: medical care of all kinds, maintenance, rescues, etc... not to mention food, with nearly 3 tons of kibble needed every month

Veterinary debts only already amount to more than 2000 euros, a very high sum for Oliviu, who does not have the resources to buy kibble again

With 260 dogs to care for, Oliviu has multiple sources of expenses: medical care, maintenance, rescues and trips are in addition to the already high food costs.

To date, a debt of more than 2000€ is still outstanding for veterinary care, Oliviu can't go deeper into debt to replenish the kibble stock.

4. If we don't reach the target, dogs won't receive any food

A failed collection on Animal Webaction

We can take action, we have already booked a truck and pallets, but we have to pay it before July 14th.

If the collection fails, we will not be able to pay, the departure of the truck will be cancelled and none of the collected kibbles will be delivered...

If the collection fails, we will refund all donors.

5. To take care of the dogs, Oliviu had to stop working, he has no additional resources to allocate to the shelter

Former consulting engineer, Oliviu left everything behind to devote his life to abandoned dogs

"I was a part-time consulting engineer, but there was too much to do at the two sites where we keep the dogs, and certainly not enough volunteers available to do the daily tasks. That's how I decided to quit my job."

Oliviu now devotes his days to the dogs cared for by the association, divided between two shelters (the maximum capacity of the first having been reached). Alone to take care of 260 dogs, from cleaning the pens to visiting the vet, Oliviu has no room for manoeuvre to work in parallel with the shelter, and very few resources.

6. No foreign association wants to commit to constant help with so many dogs to support

Most of the foreign associations and foundations with which Oliviu has discussed with are reluctant to commit to regular help for the shelter, because the number of dogs is too high, and their resources too limited....

Oliviu and his supporters have exchanged with several foreign associations and foundations in the hope of establishing new partnerships. Unfortunately, no exchange has yet led to a formal partnership.

"Most of them are somewhat scared by the big amount of dogs. They are pretty reticent to start a full partnership with Speranta shelter since they are not sure if they can cope with the amount of dogs" explains Oliviu.

7. We want to prevent them from starving

Lupu is only a young dog of one and a half years old, already traumatized by several abuses. His former owners used to tie him with a rope to beat him, Lupu needs time to recover

Following a car accident, Walter had to undergo a heavy surgery to repair one of his front legs, which had been broken during the impact. He has not yet been adopted despite some hopes, and needs the shelter to persist and obtain kibbles

Rescued while impounded, Lukas is suffering from a parasitic disease that invades his heart. He is currently on treatment, but it is not always successful

A former street dog, Nero was brought to the shelter by a person who had become fond of him, but could not adopt him. He suffers from a malformation in his front legs

Rescued from the pound, Berta is a dog that was probably trained for dog fighting. Her past makes her unable to cohabit with her peers

Found seriously injured on the roadside, Mookie was operated on for a pelvic fracture and treated for her wounds. Unfortunately, her body has not recovered despite the care she received: Mookie suffers from incontinence and is unable to walk normally

Assigned to the guard of a garage, Chester was injured and then bitten by other dogs: he lost an eye and kept sequelae on one of his knees. Vulnerable, Chester cannot be released onto the streets without facing great danger, the shelter is his only hope

8. Oliviu knows that the need for help of Romanian dogs goes beyond what he can bring alone

Pragmatic, Oliviu keeps a cool head, but knows that his devotion is not enough

Oliviu's determination to help Romanian dogs is not affected by the difficulties encountered. However, he is aware that the situation has been worrying for months, and would like someone to provide him with help, whether to finance the actions or to assist him on the ground.

"there are so many things to do in order to improve the dogs situation from Romania, you might not even imagine how much help is needed" he concluded during our visit...

9. The plight of stray dogs in Romania

Oliviu's shelter is located in Craiova, in the south of Romania

10. Thanks to our logistics centre in Romania, we can take action rapidly !

If the collection succeeds, the kibble will leave directly from our logistics centre in Romania. So we can act very quickly, and help Oliviu's 260 dogs to get food.

11. What will the 3000 kg of kibble collected be used for ?

This collection is organized by the association Speranta Pentru Animale, chaired by Oliviu. The 3000 kilos of kibble collected will be delivered to Oliviu to feed the 260 dogs hosted at the shelter
