Animal Webaction visited the site 16 September 2019 and confirms the situation described below.

In Spain, this shelter no longer has any food for its 76 dogs, they will starve to death!

We visited the shelter on September 16th, to meet Veronica and her 76 dogs.

The few kibbles left then are now gone, the situation is critical.

Bereft, Veronica is struggling to keep the shelter afloat, but cannot afford to buy more kibble.

The town hall provides very little support, and the debts are staggering.

The only foreign association that supports Veronica has asked us to intervene.

We would like to send 3120 kg of kibble as a matter of urgency.

100% transparency guaranteed.

1. The shelter no longer has any food for its 76 dogs, many are sick and will not survive

$$$
Sanson, who has been suffering from leishmaniasis for several years, died on August 25, his illness having caused liver and kidney failure that could not be cured

###
Use for hunting, Hercules was abandonned because he was not efficient enough. He is already very thin, and will not be able to resist without kibbles

###
At the shelter for several years, Morey has been suffering from leishmaniasis, for which he receives lifelong treatment, and which visibly weakens him

###
Among the most recent rescues, Brody is currently very thin, and one of the most vulnerable to a shortage of kibble

###
Barely 4 years old, Vodka suffers from a parasitic disease as well as leishmaniasis. Under treatment, she is one of the most fragile in the shelter

###
Askot and Sandik, both about ten years old, have Leishmaniasis. Their advanced age and illness make them very vulnerable

Among the 76 dogs in the shelter, several have diseases such as leishmaniasis, ehrlichiosis or babesiosis, most of which are parasitic diseases, which weaken their immune systems and make them more vulnerable.

All of them need to eat to survive, and the stakes are particularly high for already weakened and thinned dogs, who will only cope for a very short time without kibbles.

2. The kibble stock is totally used up, Veronica and the dogs live one day at a time

###
During our visit on September 16th, there were only 3 bags of kibble left at the shelter, now gone. "I managed to buy for two more days," Veronica told us on September 18th

###
To make up for the lack of kibble, Veronica collects old bread she then gives to the dogs, but the quantities are low and the nutrients non-existent

We went to the shelter on September 16, there were only 3 bags of kibble left, now gone. As Veronica herself has very few resources, she rarely has the means to buy kibble, and can only take very small quantities at best: "I managed to buy for two more days" she told us on September 18.

She and the dogs are forced to live one day at a time, old bread being often on the menu for lack of dog food...

3. The shelter is the only hope for these dogs, if it shuts down, they will be euthanized

###
Thanks to Veronica, the shelter acts as a pound for the city, where no euthanasia has been practiced for years

###
"If we run out of means to run the place , the town hall might intervene turning the shelter into a “perrera” , killing the animals that don’t find a home or a shelter" explains Veronica

###
Veronica has been trying to empty the shelter for years, so she can close it without condemning the dogs that live there. But her efforts are vain, as new dogs are constantly being brought in, and it is impossible for her to refuse them

Created in 2003, the association has concluded an agreement with the municipality that is still in place: the shelter managed by the association acts as a pound, and is committed to hosting all the dogs brought in. Therefore, the city council does not need to manage a parallel pound, in which euthanasia would be carried out.

But the maintenance of the shelter is now compromised, and is essentially based on Veronica: "The association has been managing the municipal pound for 16 years with the aim of ensuring that no euthanasia is carried out in the city, but the lack of human and economic resources does not allow us to continue to care for it, because whatever the work done, there are more and more dogs" she recently explained. "If we run out of means to run the place , the town hall might intervene turning the shelter into a “perrera” , killing the animals that don’t find a home or a shelter."

4. If we don't reach the target, dogs won't receive any food

A failed collection on Animal Webaction

We can take action, we have already booked a truck and pallets, but we have to pay it before September 23.

If the collection fails, we will not be able to pay, the departure of the truck will be cancelled and none of the collected kibbles will be delivered...

If the collection fails, we will refund all donors.

5. With a very small help from the town hall, the shelter's debts are staggering

###
No electricity, no water in winter due to frozen pipes, the shelter is precarious. But with a very low municipal subsidy that does not even cover maintenance costs, no improvement can be considered....

Although the city hall supports the shelter, the subsidy of 940€ provided each month is ridiculous compared to the costs incurred: food, treatment of chronic diseases, medical care, vaccinations, spayings/neuterings, trips to be taken... The list is long, and the costs are increasing.

With several thousand euros in debt, especially at the vet's, Veronica must find solutions quickly: "We need medicine like  Doxicivlina, Alopulinol, Nilterforan and antibiotics in order to treat some of the diseases . Sometimes we get donations but the medicines are either not for the dogs's problem or sometimes expired" she explains.

Veronica cannot choose between feeding or caring for dogs on a daily basis!

6. Veronica is constantly running to make ends meet, but this is still not enough

Booth management, physical collections, events participation.... Veronica organizes multiple events throughout the year to collect some donations

She also tries to keep the few individuals who support the shelter informed through the teaming group, which provides her with 360€ per month, a very considerable part of the help received

###
Veronica works full time at the shelter, and performs grooming jobs in parallel that allow her to survive

Alone to manage the shelter, Veronica devotes most of her days to it, every day of the year. A commitment that leaves her very little time to look for food, support, or even something to live for herself.

Yet, she does a lot outside of the shelter in order to bring back other sources of funding, and/or donations in kind: physical collections, online appeals, solidarity sales, raffles, groomings are only part of the activities that she has been carrying out for years to be able to get by.

But even at this exhausting pace, she still can't afford the costs of the shelter....

7. The only foreign charity that supports the shelter is a French one, with few resources herself

For several years, Veronica's shelter has received the support of the French association G.A.L.G.O.S, whose members already came to visit several times.

A precious help for Veronica, but which unfortunately remains limited, the charity itself having few resources, and helping many other shelters.

She's asking us to intervene to help Veronica!

8. We want to help them

###
Rudy was found last year, wandering when he was still a young puppy, and survived until now thanks to the shelter

###
A very large Mastin cross-breed dog, Isis has already lived at the shelter for several years, her large size being often seen as a problem by potential adopters

###
Probably abandoned, Whisky was picked up as he was wandering around the village last year

###
Abandoned overnight in the village, Morty remains shy even today

###
Abandoned when he was still a puppy, Luigi had been left in a box in full sunlight with his brothers and sisters. All were taken care of at the shelter, and would not have survived without Veronica's care

###
Perseo joined the shelter when he was still only a puppy: his adoption is difficult because he is considered as a category dog, and therefore requires a specific agreement

###
Ragnar was wandering alone on a wasteland when he was found by a volunteer last year, who brought him back to the shelter

###
Abused before arriving at the shelter, Chula gradually regained her confidence there, but remains shy

###
Like many, Lucia joined the shelter after being found wandering around the city. A very large dog, Lucia has not yet found any adopters

###
Mario is Luigi's brother, both were abandoned when they were still puppies in a box in full sunlight, and would not have survived without Veronica

9. For 14 years, Veronica has been dedicating her life to dogs

###

Veronica became the official president of the association in 2009, and initially became involved in this project with several people, including her ex-husband. But the situation was too difficult to handle, and Veronica is now the only one to carry the shelter.

Located in a very abusive area, the shelter constantly needs to hosts new dogs, which is very difficult for Veronica to manage, morally and physically. "She does absolutely everything she can in view of the situation, and the fact that she has to deal with problems mainly by herself. But this rhythm has taken its toll on her personal life," summed up our agent Baciu after his meeting with Veronica.

Although she keeps going, despite personal sacrifices, Veronica cannot bear not being able to provide for the animals: "We have struggled a lot for years, we have experienced inhuman conditions in the shelter, both for the volunteers and for the animals who live there. We do not want to see 200 animals and not have the means to give them a decent life. "

10. In Spain, dog is not man's best friend

Veronica's shelter is located in the central eastern part of Spain

An article from February 2019, reporting a 20% increase in animal abuse in Spain...

A recent study from the Spanish Nature Protection Service (Seprona) reported 10,920 offences related to injuries caused to domestic animals in 2018 alone.... An alarming figure which, however, is far from representing all animal abuse in the country, which most of the time goes unpunished.

Commonly used for hunting, dogs are at the centre of these abuses: beaten and barely fed, hunting dogs are thrown into the street at the slightest sign of weakness. Exhausted and abused, dogs are often too weak to survive alone in the wild.

Across Spain, several shelters exist and are struggling to offer a second chance to these dogs rejected by others...

11. Thanks to our logistics centre in Spain, we can take action quickly

If the collection succeeds, the food will leave directly from our logistics centre in Spain! We can therefore act very quickly, and help the 76 dogs at Veronica's shelter to get food.

12. What will the 3120 kilos collected be used for  ?

This collection is organised by the association ASPA, chaired by Veronica. The 3120 kg of kibbles collected will be delivered to Veronica to feed the 76 dogs in the shelter.
