Animal Webaction visited the site 13 December 2019 and confirms the situation described below.

If this collection fails, Animal Webaction cannot be held responsible for the deaths of dogs caused by a lack of food.

Svetlana has no more kibble to feed the street dogs, they won't make it through the winter!

In Serbia, Svetlana and a handful of volunteers are fighting to save the street dogs, who cannot be taken in anywhere

The kibbles are exhausted, Svetlana begs us to help them.

Following her SOS, we went there on December 13th.

The donations are insufficient, and the meagre resources of the volunteers do not allow them to buy kibbles

We wish to help them, by sending 1800 kg of kibbles as a matter of urgency.

100% transparency guaranteed.

1. Temperatures will drop to -7° in only a few days, and the street dogs have no more kibble, they can't survive the winter!

When her owner died, Malena was thrust into a life where she has to fend for herself out there. Until now, she has always been able to count on Sevtlana's help to get food, but now she has no more kibble to bring her...

Džimi is usually based at a bus stop in town, knowing that volunteers will come to meet him and bring him food and water

Fearful, Pera tries to keep out of sight most of the time, but shows up around Svetlana to get something to eat

Discovered on the street by one of the volunteers in mid-December, this young dog was already emaciated and totally lost... Without kibble, and with more than 100 dogs to care for already, the volunteers are helpless to help her...

Injured when he was discovered on the street, this young dog cannot be taken in. Treated and fed so far, he will have to fend for himself this winter if the volunteers cannot get kibble

Abandoned overnight for the most part, street dogs have to get used to a very hard life, where food, water and heat are scarce... A situation all the more critical in winter

With temperatures dropping drastically and near permanent humidity, it is very difficult for street dogs to fight the cold, and even more difficult for them to find food on their own

Temperatures as low as -7° are already forecast for the next few days...

Due to a lack of space and infrastructure, it is impossible for Svetlana and the other volunteers to accommodate all the street dogs: more than sixty of them are now forced to spend the winter outside ...

If the volunteers take time to feed them every day to help them through this difficult period, they are now backed into a corner: their kibble stock is gone, they can no longer help them!

2. Following Svetlana's SOS, we were on the spot on December 13th: there were barely a few kibbles left...

###
Our agent Ana (left) went to meet Svetlana (right), President of the BAK association, on December 13th

Last March, the Animal Webaction community rallied to send 3500 kg of kibble to Svetlana. Almost 9 months later, she begs us to help her again

Last March, the Animal Webaction community rallied to support Svetlana, sending 3500 kg of kibble on the spot.

Nine months have passed since then, and Svetlana has no more kibble to distribute to the dogs... The leftovers she manages to get to feed them are random, the lack of kibbles puts the dogs' lives in danger, as well as the survival of the whole association !

3. Due to a lack of resources, the shelter could not be finished: the 117 dogs taken in by the volunteers are exposed to the cold, they need kibble!

###
The construction of a shelter was launched a few months ago, in order to shelter more street dogs in good conditions. But only a few enclosures have been built, and there are no roofs on them yet

###
Volunteers now have a large land to accommodate the dogs, but no infrastructure. "We are really scared for the winter, knowing that most of the dogs are still living outside for the moment," Svetlana explained

###
The dogs that are taken in are now divided between the main shelter and the yards of several volunteers. With the already very rainy weather in December, some of the places had become almost uninhabitable during our visit

###
Dogs try to find ways to keep warm as best they can, but cannot totally escape the winter cold that frightens the volunteers, they need kibbles to survive!

4. We want to help them

###
Kica had to undergo surgery after being hit by a car: he suffered fractures to his right limbs and needed several months to recover

###
Lajka was thrown in the garbage like a piece of trash when she was just a puppy and was taken in by volunteers and put in a safe place

###
Maza was found on the street when she was just a puppy, and has since been sheltered by one of the volunteers

###
Buvica was hit by a car in the streets of the city: to treat her, she had to be fitted with pins. Now cured, she stayed with Svetlana

###
Suffering from a broken leg and infested with parasites when he was rescued, Mvrica owes its salvation to the intervention of volunteers

###
Abused by his former owner, Dzesi was taken in by Ljiljana, one of the volunteers on the spot

###
Cule was thrown into Svetlana's yard one night, when he was just a puppy: he was wounded in the eye

###
Djina was slowly dying in the street after being abandoned, before being rescued by the volunteers

5. If we don't reach the target, dogs won't receive any food

A failed collection on Animal Webaction

We can take action, we've already booked a truck and pallets, but we have to pay it before January 9th.

If the collection fails, we will not be able to pay, the departure of the truck will be cancelled and none of the croquettes collected will be delivered .

In case of failure, we will reimburse all donors.

6. A fellow organization that supports Svetlana has already done its utmost, and cannot buy kibbles anymore

In November, the Orca organisation supporting Svetlana sent 500kg of kibbles on the spot: a very precious help, but which cannot be renewed, and the kibbles are now completly gone !

Due to the lack of food, the ORCA organization intervened in support of the association in mid-November, bringing 500 kg of kibbles.

But this stock is now totally depleted, and it is impossible for the organisation to renew this help. We are Svetlana's last resort to find kibbles!

7. The volunteers themselves have few resources, which they already use for the dogs, they can't do more than that

###
"We need to buy medicine, fuel and many other things" says Svetlana, who dedicates her life to the abandoned dogs

"We don’t have any resources other than individual donations, and of course we don’t know how much people will want to give us. Those of us who have a job donate regularly, but we have our own difficulties and some months we are stuck !" explained Marija, one of the volunteers during our exchanges.

With few resources and so many expenses, they can't afford to buy more kibbles.

8. Spaying and neutering campaigns, vet care, vaccinations... volunteers are making a real difference on the spot, we must help them to continue...

For 2 years, the association has been supported by the Brigitte Bardot Foundation to conduct spaying and neutering campaigns

"We've been fighting for 11 years. And we've got something now" says Svetlana, proud to make a real difference for abandoned dogs.

Supported for the past two years by the Brigitte Bardot Foundation to organize spaying and neutering campaigns, the association is making a major contribution to reducing the population of street dogs year after year, and improving the situation of those who remain there.

We must help Svetlana and the other volunteers to continue their fight!

9.  Svetlana has been devoted to animals for decades, and is fighting to make a difference

###
With the help of her husband, Svetlana is fighting to improve animal welfare in Serbia

Faced daily with the terrible situation of street dogs in Serbia, Svetlana has been involved for decades in helping them, and created the BAK association in 2008.

"The Serbian law in terms of animal protection is rather well done" Svetlana explains. Unfortunately, institutions are very cautious when it comes to enforcing it. As an individual, I had no clout against the authorities, and it was easy for them to ignore me. That was the first thing that led me to create a formal association. Today, local authorities are forced to count with BAK, as with other associations in the country."

Svetlana is very involved in raising awareness, and therefore intervenes in schools, at conferences, as well as in court for cases of abuse.

Through all these actions, Svetlana invests all her savings, her energy, her health, and her personal life for her cause, but everything relies on her... Let’s not let her down, she needs us!

10. In Serbia, 100,000 street dogs are hunted down by dogcatchers to be killed or trapped in killing pounds

The shelter of the BAK association and its interventions are located in the north of Serbia

It is estimated that Serbia has about 100,000 stray dogs. Private companies were commissioned in 2012 to capture these dogs: their dogcatchers (the name given to the employees responsible for the capture) have been operating throughout the country since then.

Receiving bonuses for each dog captured, dogcatchers hunt dogs relentlessly, and use extremely violent capture techniques. Many dogs are killed, the others end up crammed into killing pounds, without care or food.

Volunteers believe that their actions, in addition to being cruel, do not have a beneficial impact on the volume of stray dogs in the country. Worse still, they greatly undermine the beneficial actions that have existed until now: the subsidies allocated since 2007 as part of a vast national sterilization program have been drastically cut, despite encouraging results when they were carried out....

11. What will the 1800 kg of dry food collected be used for ?

This collection is organized by the BAK association, chaired by Svetlana. The 1800 kg of dry food collected will be delivered to Svetlana to feed the 106 dogs cared for by the volunteers, as well as the street dogs.
