Animal Webaction visited the site 17 April 2020 and confirms the situation described below.
Animal Webaction cannot be held responsible for dog deaths due to the absence of kibble.
"We have had a terrible situation in Tangier since the Coronavirus. We were feeding over 2,000 animals every day. Now we have a lot of stray animals who have nothing to eat since the restaurants, cafes, hotels etc... are closed. Dogs can no longer find any waste in the garbage to survive.
There are an estimated 30000 stray dogs in and around Tangier, and even more cats. Since nobody is allowed to go out unless they have an authorization, these poor animals have nothing left to eat. We are now feeding more animals than ever, and we need help more than ever."
"Please help us feed the animals in the sanctuary. If the dogs don't get enough to eat, they'll get sick and die.
We don't know what tomorrow holds. Not being able to feed them makes me sick. Please, please help us."
"Tangier is a pilot city, thanks to the Hayat Project we've set up. We reduce the dog population and prevent unnecessary suffering in a humane way through spaying and neutering; we vaccinate all dogs to protect them but also to protect humans living in the same territory.
We remain committed to making Tangier the first rabies-free and animal-friendly city in Africa. The Hayat Project allows us to go and feed our babies, without us the stray dogs would starve.
For our taggeds dogs in particular, feeding them is essential. They have become health workers to protect us from rabies, we must feed them, we must protect them. We didn't do all this to let them starve to death now."
"We've been taking care of Rosa for seven months, she's living on the streets. She must have been punched in the nose, we took her to the vet. Fortunately it's not serious. At the moment she's still with us, we put ointment on her injury twice a day."
"Coronavirus is not only a nightmare disease, but the consequences of lockdown necessary to protect citizens have a huge impact on the homeless, stray animals and poor families.
I know this is hard in this period because of the lack of means, that's why I need help from you, I don't want to give up yet. I can't take care of all the dogs on the streets, this exceeds my physical and practical energy.
I also don't receive any financial support from the government either, it's already great to have been able to convince them not to kill the dogs anymore, I've committed myself to treat and spay or neuter them. In this critical period I need support from associations and people to help to save those dogs and provide them with food.
"I have been passionate about dogs since my childhood, I decided when i will grow up, i will protect the whole dogs in my country, and do the campaigns to teach children to respect dogs and animals in general, and i will prevent the government from killing them.
It is the dream of childhood to pick up all animals in a shelter, I sold all my goods to start SFT.
Now i was able to achieve this dream, and i want to protect all the dogs in my country not just in my city, i want to make a life that can human and dogs live in harmony.
This for me is more than mission it is the part of my life, i can't live without protecting dogs and take care of them because i was born to do this. All I need is some support to be able to protect them always and in all the situations."
AAnimal Webaction has a logistics center in Morocco, still active despite the lockdown, which allows it to intervene quickly and deliver kibbles.
"Due to the coronavirus crisis, monthly donations have been cancelled. We know people are afraid, and people who lose their jobs they can't afford to help us. We get nice messages from people who apologize because they can't help
I have a debt of 6000$ at the supplier and 25000$ at the veterinarian. We have to buy water because there is no water at the sanctuary, and we don't have electricity because it's too expensive."
