"Life is difficult at the shelter: cold, rain, snow, overcrowding, fights, permanent stress... Their only pleasure is to eat and soon it won't be possible anymore ... We are often short of money... We have so many veterinary bills to pay, pensions, renovation or construction work in the shelter... we need help for food.
Problems are piling up, some neighbours have even poisoned our babies, and too many new dogs have been welcomed at the shelter recently. HELP US feed them, HELP US save them!"
"The shelter is overcrowded, there are too many dogs, which creates fights. The shelter regularly has more than 50 dogs "in excess" compared to its capacity. Without adoptions, this number cannot decrease and fights are more frequent. With the quarantine, the situation gets worse because people can no longer adopt!
The municipality is supposed to pay for food but does not do so because it is not a priority budget. The dogs get very nervous when they don't eat enough and sometimes we have to give less food so we can have enough food for the next month."
"Missy was a sweet little dog, always happy but a little shy, I had gained her trust. On March 12, I arrived at the shelter in the morning, I saw a fight in one of the pens at the back. Missy was on the ground, not dead yet, and the others were picking on her. I took her into the office but it was too late, she died in my arms..."
"Due to the quarantine, there are fewer staff at the shelter. The dogs are alone part of the day and part of the night. Basic needs are provided but tensions are created and fighting ensues...
Max was attacked by the other dogs when nobody was around, he is a nice submissive dog who never tries to fight ... He had emergency surgery but the vet had to amputate a front leg to save him and avoid infections and septicaemia. He's recovering slowly, alone in the barn next to the shelter."
"Food is difficult to find at an affordable price in Serbia, and delivery times are not always guaranteed, especially during the quarantine period. Having enough food is a regular stress.
If there is no more food, dogs will lose weight, become aggressive towards each other, attack each other for food and some will not survive. Some shelters in Serbia are deadly shelters where the dogs are crammed without food, this was the case of Bečej 's shelter10 years ago, we changed that by improving the whole infrastructure, by making life easier for these dogs, by saving their lives, we are afraid to live the same situation by lack of food!"
Animal Webaction has a logistics platform directly in Serbia, still active despite the pandemic, which allows it to intervene quickly and deliver kibble.
"People can't help all the time and there are already so many associations in need... Quarantine has made things worse. Lately, we don't have many adoptions but that's normal considering the situation... The French association Nobody's Dog is always there to help me, Lydia and Celine do their best but without donations, without adoptions, there is nothing we can do. We don't have mud anymore at the shelter since Nobody's dog France paid to put concret everywhere, which helped to reduce fights, dogs are not covered with mud all the time.
But despite everything, we still have too many dogs at the shelter, several have been attacked, Max was amputated from a leg to survive, Missy and Sheep died, I couldn't save them. I can't move the dogs, there's no more room and I can't do anything. I've asked Nobody's dog France to help me pay for the work and build new yards, which will be impossible without donations..."

Due to the current health crisis, Serbia has been placed in lockdown for over a month now. As movements have been drastically reduced and controlled, it was impossible for us to visit the shelter to prepare this action.
However, Animal Webaction visited Becej's shelter only a few months ago. We are in close contact with Kristina (she helped us prepare this campaign), and and grant her all our trust.
