Animal Webaction visited the site 07 July 2020 and confirms the situation described below.

1. In Morocco, Ghita has no more kibble to feed 50 street cats! If the situation persists, they will die of hunger !

%%%

"I feel like the stray dog situation in Morocco is being relayed a lot everywhere, but you almost never hear anything about cats. Yet, they suffer as much abuse and malnutrition as dogs; I would like people to be aware of that. There are a lot of famine and malnutrition cases, not to mention diseases like coryza or calicivirus, which are very common among street cats.

During confinement, many cats were found locked up in shops and cellars. We were forced to break down doors to go and rescue them...There were a lot of abandonments and I realized that in the neighborhood, if I don't feed the cats, no one else does.

I usually feed about 50 street cats, but with the pandemic, I lost my job, I haven't had a salary for 5 months. I can no longer afford to buy kibble for them because I also look after 35 cats at home, for which I already buy kibble on credit at the pet shop...I'm really afraid for the strays, I'm afraid they'll die of hunger or dehydration, with the overwhelming heat we have here in Marrakech..."

2. Thrown into the street by owners who mistreated him, Rouquin is now left to fend for himself. If Ghita doesn't find any kibble to give him, he will starve!

###

"Rouquin's a one year-old male, he's been on the street for about five weeks. He was abandoned, put on the street for no reason, and now he's wandering the streets hoping to find something to eat.

Unfortunately, he has known the comfort of a house, he had meals every day and from one day to the next he found himself on the street, so it is difficult for him to find food especially because he is not used to this way of life.

He has an ear injury, I continue to treat him but he is not doing well, he has lost a lot of weight and has lost some hair so you can definitely see he's under a lot of stress. He's very unhappy and completely disoriented."

3. Ghita also takes care of 35 cats at home, which she rescued from the streets of Marrakech. Without kibble, they too are in danger!

%%%

"Currently I have 35 cats at home. Their state of health is average, there are cats with chronic diseases, kittens who regularly fall ill (coryza). All my cats are from the street and were originally in a very deplorable condition.

I have a 50m² apartment, which prevents me from taking in more cats for the moment, also because adoptions are blocked. So I only take in cats that have vital emergencies. My main problem is lack of space, but lack of money too, because with money I could feed them, take care of them and sterilize them. Something I could do before, but not anymore...

Containment has totally exhausted my resources, and we don't get donations. We are not very good at communicating on social media, and since we don't have any land to build our shelter on yet, people don't dare to visit us, because they feel like they're getting into my privacy by visiting my apartment... The situation is far from ideal."

4. Saved from death a month ago by Ghita, Mirabelle's health remains very fragile. Without kibbles, she won't survive!

###

"Mirabelle is a female cat, she's around two months old. It's been a month since I took her into my home. I found her next to my building, in a catastrophic state.

She was in a state of extreme malnutrition and dehydration and had a concussion. Today, she still has after-effects: she has epileptic seizures and she also has a lung problem.

She is a very cuddly and adorable cat, but she is often tired because she is fragile to begin with. She's better than before but her symptoms are not 100% cured, and if I can no longer feed her, her condition will get worse very quickly!"

5. Ghita lost her job during the confinement, and her association receives few donations, her budget is exhausted. She can no longer buy croquettes!

###

"I grew up in Morocco in the 70s', my mother is French and she taught me from a young age to care and feed stray animals in Meknes and Rabat. I left Morocco for France when I was 11 years old, and I came back in 2010. From then on, I started taking care of stray animals again.

Then in 2019, the idea of the association was born in several regions (Salé, Kénitra, Casablanca, Témara and Marrakech) with the goal to vaccinate, sterilize and have as many animals as possible adopted here and abroad. Sometimes I feel like I won't make it... When you have 700 euro bills and you've also lost your job ,it's really hard.

As of recently, I've just found a new job in a call centre, but my salary doesn't allow me to pay off the association's debts...We have 500 euros debts at the vet, and until we pay him, the vet doesn't allow us to enter the clinic anymore... We need help to continue rescuing cats!"

6. Ghita isn't asking for money, only kibble to keep her cats from starving!

###

"I'm angry. I would like for people to become aware of the animal cause in Morocco, and of the importance of sterilization...I would like people to understand that an animal shouldn't live outside, especially not a cat.

These cats put themselves in danger, there is a lot of road traffic here, and as soon as they have the opportunity to find something to eat they will throw themselves at it. They risk being hit by a car or a motorbike, especially in Marrakech.

Additionally, now that some shops have reopened, restaurants do not stop chasing cats away because they disturb their clientele."

7. If this campaign succeeds, Ghita will not receive any money but 1140 kg of kibbles, delivered from Animal Webaction's logistic platform in Morocco.

Animal Webaction has a logistic platform in Morocco which allows us to intervene quickly and deliver kibbles throughout the country.

8. Despite many calls for help, Ghita's situation isn't getting any better. This campaign is her last hope!

"From time to time, we receive donations from individuals through SOS and sponsorship requests that we launch on Facebook. We've also set up a fundraising, but in 6 months time we managed to collect only 500 euros.

We have launched a teaming site for sponsorships, but it hasn't worked at all. Our only hope is the help of the international community because here in Marrakech (unlike Rabat and Casablanca), I have the feeling that people are indifferent, it's a city where everybody wants to go out, everybody wants to go shopping but almost nobody thinks about animals.

9. Campaigns launched on Animal Webaction often fail.

When a campaign fails, Animal Webaction cannot deliver the collected products, the organizer receives nothing and the buyers get a refund.

10. In Morocco, donors are scarce, and there are no foundations or subsidies . It is very difficult to find funding for kibbles, many cats remain starving in the street!

If you know of a foundation or NGO that could help Ghita, please invite them to contact us so that we can put them in touch.
