Animal Webaction visited the site 19 September 2020 and confirms the situation described below.

1. In Serbia, Dragica is almost out of kibble to feed the 77 dogs under her care. If no one does anything, they will starve!

%%%

"Here, only my rescue houses abandoned dogs, there is no city-run shelter. I take in the ones that are sick, injured, too old or too young to survive on the streets.

My only wish is to provide a normal life for my animals, just that they have enough food and kennels. All my time is spent at the shelter, so I can’t work, and we do receive donations, but they are just not enough for everything we need...

At the moment, our food supplies are running dangerously low so I've had to go and buy some on credit, but that can’t go on forever, my resources are limited… I just can’t let my dogs go hungry, I can't. I need help providing for them."

2. Without a new stock of kibble, Dragica's 77 dogs won't endure Serbia's tough winter season!

###

"I've already had to start relying more and more on non-kibble food, like old bread, and bits of chicken in order to try and make the food last a bit longer...

But because of these lower quality food alternatives, the dogs' immune systems get weaker and they are more prone to diseases. My dogs are here because of their weaknesses to begin with, because they wouldn't be able to survive on their own.

And now with the colder weather approaching, the chances of them getting sick only increases... My main concern is that they’ll go hungry and start turning on one another. If there is less food, the competition will be higher, I worry that they’ll start fighting and injuring one another."

3. Belkica has come back from the dead thanks to Dragica's intervention. But without kibble, she won't survive!

###

"Belkica is a young female, less than a year old. She's been with us for around 6 months. She was a part of a litter of five thate were all abandoned as soon as they opened their eyes...

All of her siblings died due to parvovirosis, and she managed to survive both it and Canine Distemper Virus she later caught. She is still so young that she hasn’t received her vaccines.

Belkica is slowly recovering and is a sweet, friendly dog. She is a fighter, but she cannot recover without proper, quality food. She is still a puppy, and puppies cannot survive on stale bread. She is doing her best, but she needs help!"

4. Faced with a lack in donations, Dragica is selling household items to try and pay for the shelter's debts and continue saving lives. She needs help!

###

"I have no help from the city or the state. I rely mostly on donations acquired through Facebook or Instagram. And lately, my donations have clearly dropped. I have debts to the veterinary clinic, to the kibble shop...

I try to get by. I pay off one debt, and create another. Luckily, our creditors are willing to wait a bit, but I just cannot manage alone. I've already had to start selling some household items to pay some of the shelter’s debts...

Before, we had donors who would pay a dog food manufacturer directly, and have food delivered to us, but now I can’t remember the last time that happened. We need help!"

5. Dragica isn't asking for money, only kibbles to keep the dogs from starving...

###

"I've always felt it was my duty to help all dogs who need it. I find the dogs by instinct, or hear about them, or they come to me for help and I cannot refuse, no matter how many dogs I already have, I just can’t just leave sick or injured dogs in hostile situations, so I go and collect them. Because, if I don't do it, no one else here will...

Nobody has a problem stopping me and telling me that they have more animals than they want or that they have puppies or kittens they don’t need, and that I should take them. But I can’t think of one example when someone offered me just one sack of kibble...

Even the city officials call me to tell me to get the dogs out of the public park, as the children are afraid to go in... They call me even though they don’t want to offer me any kind of help. To be honest, if our shelter closed down, I don’t know what would happen to these dogs..."

6. If this campaign succeeds, Dragica will not receive any money but 1800 kg of kibbles, delivered from Animal Webaction's logistics platform in Serbia.

Animal Webaction has a logistic centre directly in Serbia, which enables us to intervene quickly and deliver kibbles.

7. Dragica can count on the support of a few faithful supporters, but they've already done their maximum.

The situation the shelter’s facing makes me feel afraid and helpless. I feel discouraged as I get more understanding from foreigners on Facebook or Instagram, or the people I meet for the first time, than from the people I’ve lived with my whole life in my hometown...

I think we generally lag behind the western nations when it comes to the humanitarian consciousness and donations. The kids aren’t taught to appreciate and help abandoned dogs; they sometimes even bully them!

People also continue abandoning their dogs or unwanted puppies in the city center, the park, in front of my gate or even inside garbage bins. But no one is willing to step up! We are the only hope for the abandoned dogs here, and we cannot do it without you!
