Animal Webaction visited the site 13 March 2021 and confirms the situation described below.
"Me and my 70 dogs were hit by the pandemic a couple of months ago, just one and half year into the shelter's existence. It made us lose our only food sponsor, a local IT company, because their financial situation was too bad.
Since then, I have been trying to cope with my personal funds. If I were rich and I could afford it, it would not be a problem, but my savings will soon end, and then what? I am already making my dogs live hand to mouth, making kibble last for as long as I can, with only 10 bags left today. This is a few days of food only!
I am desperate to gather the amount of food my dogs need. Closing the shelter due to the lack of food is no option as I cannot just leave the dogs to become strays again after they have known what love is, had a warm place to sleep and had food to eat..."
"Many dogs get abandoned in this area... People get them when they are puppies and everything goes well as long as they are little and cute. But then, they grow up, they get dropped in the nearby square and I get calls to pick them up.
But I have limited space and now the food issue is affecting us too, preventing me from rescuing more dogs. How can I rescue them when the only option is to bring them in to a shelter where they might not have anything left to eat in the near future ? It is scaring me wild and it keeps me up at night.
It is very hard to turn these dogs away, because if I leave them on the street, they risk to be picked up and killed in the nearest kill shelter."
"Tika comes from my city and yet she was about to be transfered to the pound in another city. In this pound, they euthanize dogs, and at the time they were also in the middle of a canine distemper outbreak. I rescued Tika just in time and she ended up in my shelter.
We had to put her in quarantine as she tested positive to parvovirus. She is still sensitive after the disease and what she has been through, and she will definitely need to recover strength and gain some weight."
"Donations have dropped because people are impacted by the pandemic and companies have already said they don’t have enough treasury: for now, no one is able to provide us with kibble or funds on a regular basis.
And yet I have to pay rent, spaying, vet fees and food... The lack of money forced me to end up a partnership we had with a food company in Alba Iulia, as I could no longer afford to buy their kibble.
I was hoping the pandemic would resolve and things would go back to normal, but the food situation has now become threatening and I need some help."
"Initially, I was a public shelter volunteer and I got traumatised by the things I saw there. Then that public shelter had to close and they began to send dogs to the kill shelter. This is when I decided to open Semper Fidelis, to rescue the dogs I had become attached to.
When rescue dogs first arrive here, they eat so much food for the first 3 to 4 days, before realising that nobody is gonna take the food away from them ever again. Only then do they start to relax and can we build some trust, and eventually we become friends.
My love for animals is endless, I would love to do so much more for them, to arrange and decorate the shelter to be the most welcoming of all places for those who knew suffering."
Animal Webaction has a logistic platform in Romania, which allows us to intervene quickly and deliver kibbles.
"I have been counting on some relatives and friend, animal lovers who have come and donated some food for the dogs, but they have done their best already, and the few bags of kibbles we bought are now gone.
These friends are also helping in getting my dogs adopted in the UK and in Germany through a couple of associations, as people here are not so much educated on how to care for their animals. I try to convince them not to abandon them and to spay them, but it is hard to get things to change. Even the city hall, who initially promised they would sponsor sterilisation, got back on its word.
I feel very bad about how the situation evolves, but I wont give up. I am relatively new to this, but I am motivated and if I started this I will go on until the end."
When a campaign fails, Animal Webaction cannot deliver the collected products, the beneficiary receives nothing and the buyers are refunded.
