1. In Serbia, Ivana has only three days of kibble left to feed the 77 street dogs in her care.
“On the streets, 77 dogs depend on me for food. And today, I have barely three days of kibble left.
I’ve been rationing for a week already. I’m stretching the stock as far as I can, but it’s not enough. The nights are getting cold, and the dogs are hungrier than usual: the cold takes more energy out of them, and this is exactly when I have to ration.
Some have no shelter and spend the night outside. Winter hasn’t really set in yet: to help them get through it, they need full bowls.”
2. When they’re hungry, street dogs wander off: regular feeding rounds keep them off the roads and out of the pound.
“A hungry dog doesn’t sit and wait: it goes looking elsewhere. It crosses roads, it gets close to houses and shops, and the further it strays, the more risks it takes. In recent months, I’ve seen dogs taken away to the pound, others hit by cars, others abused.
I also think about the most vulnerable ones. Gricka is twelve, she’s been living on the streets for seven or eight years, and she moves slowly: she can’t keep up with the others or search further afield. In the cold, an old dog like her needs to eat every day to keep her strength up.
For now, I’m not seeing them lose weight. To keep it that way all winter, the bowls need to stay full.”
3. Buba has a tumour that can’t be operated on: she needs to eat every day to keep her strength up.
“Buba is twelve or thirteen. She turned up on the streets a few years ago. I think her owner abandoned her there, at an age when a dog should be living out its days somewhere warm.
She has a tumour, and it can’t be operated on because of her age. I can’t cure her. All I can do is help her keep her strength up by bringing her food every day.
With her illness, her body has fewer reserves than the others’. She’s already been abandoned: at the very least, I want her to eat her fill every day.”
4. At the shelter, Ivana feeds 55 more dogs from the same stock, and buys kibble on credit to get by.
“At the shelter, I look after 55 dogs. To feed them, I buy kibble on credit from the pet shop, and I make do with lower-quality kibble.
There are some happy stories. Chester, who I took in after he was hit by a truck, has made a full recovery. Three dogs have also found homes.
But over the same period, four more have arrived, and abandonment is on the rise: sometimes I have to turn dogs away, for lack of space or kibble. For now, the shelter dogs are holding up. The trouble is, I can’t afford to deal with illness this winter: the best protection I can give them is enough food.”
5. Mila is only just recovering from a broken femur: she needs good food to heal.
“Mila is only eleven months old. She was hit by a car and ended up with a serious femur fracture. I took her in a month and a half ago. She’s had surgery, and now we do her physio sessions together every day.
She’s a young dog with everything still ahead of her. Her bone needs to knit back together, and her muscles need to get stronger. For that, she needs enough good-quality food.
I want all the effort we put in every day to give her every chance of healing without any lasting damage.”
6. Ivana owes around €900 to the vet and the pet shop, and has left her electricity bill unpaid to feed her dogs.
“Between the vet and the pet shop, I owe around €900. I haven’t had any outside help: no donations, no fundraisers, no organisations.
To buy food for the dogs, I didn’t pay my electricity bill.
I already have a job. I could look for a second one to earn a bit more, but then I wouldn’t have time to look after them. I can’t earn more, and I can’t spend less: what I need right now is kibble.”
7. Ivana isn’t asking for money, just kibble so her dogs can eat their fill.
“Not many people around me understand what I do. For most of them, the dogs are a nuisance: on the streets they’re in the way, and when I take them in at the shelter, they’re still a nuisance because they bark. There are a few people, though, who understand the love I have for them and offer a kind word.
When the last campaign failed, I was really scared. I didn’t sleep for several days. I was looking for a way out, and I couldn’t see one.
Today, my stock is almost gone, and all I’m asking for is kibble so my dogs can make it through the winter.”

10. In Serbia, street dogs are hunted by the state and ignored by the population, volunteers like Ivana are their only hope.
