1. In Serbia, Svetlana is nearly out of kibble to feed the 284 dogs at her shelter. They will starve to death if no one steps in to help!
"It’s chaos right now. We have 284 dogs at the shelter, and the number keeps growing... This summer is worse than ever : abandoned puppies are turning up everywhere! Adoptions? Zero. Not a single one. In July and August, people go on holiday and have other things on their minds. Donations have also collapsed, sadly, the two go hand in hand...
More dogs, less kibble : it’s become unbearable. I’m cutting portions, and I can see the fear in their eyes at mealtime.
We have barely enough to last two days… and after that? Nothing. How am I supposed to feed 284 hungry dogs? I don’t know... And that’s exactly what terrifies me.
2. Already weakened, the many puppies and sick dogs at the refuge won’t stand a chance if the kibble shortage continues…
"For weeks now, I’ve been weighing every portion. The dogs feel it. Even if the heat cuts their appetite a little, the unstable weather and irregular meals are making them anxious.
I’m most worried about the fragile ones : the old dogs, the sick ones, the growing puppies. We can’t feed them bread or scraps! They need proper nutrition; without it, their health declines quickly, and all the progress we’ve made so far can be lost.
If this campaign fails, the consequences will be terrible, and our most vulnerable dogs will be the first to suffer. Some may not survive..."
3. Broken leg, parvovirus, wasp sting… Tisa is exhausted and won’t survive without kibble.
"Tisa is only three months old, and she’s one of the most fragile puppies I’ve ever seen. Abandoned with her sister by the side of a highway, I used to leave them some food whenever I passed. One day, they were gone. Then I saw Tisa crawling out of a pipe, unable to stand, her leg broken...
As if that wasn’t enough, she caught parvovirus and a wasp sting left her face swollen! She truly hasn’t had an easy start in life. Yet, when I approach, she still wags her tail… though her eyes are full of fear.
She’s been here barely ten days, and already she’s lived through hell. To survive, Tisa needs medicine and proper food. Without it, her chances are almost zero : her body simply won’t be able to fight."
4. Out of funds, burdened with urgent debts, and with empty food bowls : without this campaign, the shelter's survival is at risk.
"Our financial situation is disastrous. By August 10th, we were already at zero : not a cent left. My salary is gone before the month even begins: urgent care for the animals, upkeep of the shelter… and then we still have to last another twenty days. I have about 1,000 euros in vet debt to pay before I can sterilize the next 10 dogs. And we still need to feed everyone: to be covered for a month, we’d need around three tons of kibble : thousand of euros I simply don’t have.
I’ve contacted other associations, but the results are meager: a few bags here and there, enough for a day or two at most. Several regular donors have also stopped their contributions, thinking their small amounts don’t matter, while every euro truly matters for the dogs.
This kibble campaign isn’t just important : it’s vital. For the survival of the shelter, for the survival of the dogs. If we can get these three tons now, we can avoid disaster, feed the dogs, and finally focus on what matters most: improving their lives and well-being."
5. Svetlana isn’t asking for money, just kibble so the dogs don’t starve.
"Dogs are the only reason I keep fighting this difficult battle : nothing else. With them, everything is simple: there’s gratitude, loyalty, and unconditional love you just don’t find in people. After all these years running the shelter, I’ve learned it’s not just about giving them food and water : it’s about giving hope to those society has abandoned.
Here, the situation is truly tough. Many think a shelter is just a place to pet dogs, without realizing the hard work it takes: cleaning, feeding, caring for them every single day without pause. Few people are willing to get involved, and that’s why every donation counts : it allows us to plan, cover essential needs, and ensure the dogs’ survival.
This campaign is nothing less than a matter of survival for the dogs. Every donation, no matter how small, can mean the difference between life and death for the 284 dogs who depend on us and have nowhere else to go."
