"Today, I care for 117 dogs. For now, I haven't yet had to reduce their portions, which is already a lot. But my reserves are running out, and I know how quickly they disappear when there are this many mouths to feed...
People sometimes imagine that a shelter empties out when adoptions are going well. For me, it isn't that simple. Since the beginning of the year, I have had 53 dogs adopted, which I am proud of, because that means 53 stories with happy endings. But over the same period, I have also taken in 47 new dogs, dumped in front of my gate! In the end, my numbers barely change.
The real problem is that my stocks are almost gone and I already have a debt with my supplier. I would rather launch this campaign now, while I still have a little room to maneuver, than wait until I have my back against the wall and watch my dogs waste away..."

"My shelter is full of old dogs and sick dogs, and for them, what they eat is not a minor detail: it is what keeps them alive. Regular, good-quality food, at their age and in their condition, is not a luxury, it is their only support!
Katica is fifteen years old, and she has spent every one of those fifteen years here, ever since she was abandoned in front of our gate. She doesn't have any dramatic illness, just the weight of the years on an exhausted body. Natalija is fourteen and has a liver tumor that has already formed metastases; there is no treatment for her, I can only support her. Petra, also fourteen, has joints so stiff that moving around has become difficult for her, she walks slowly, cautiously.
For dogs like them, if I have to resort to poor-quality or irregular food, they will be the first to decline. They no longer have the strength to cope with going without. That is what I want to avoid at all costs: my most fragile dogs paying the price for an order I cannot place."

"Valentina is fourteen years old and has lived with us all this time, also left one day in front of the shelter. She has a tumor of the adrenal gland, for which there is no possible treatment. What worries me with her is that she eats, but she keeps losing weight anyway, a little more every week.
When I look at her, I can see that her body no longer holds on to anything. In her case, there is only one thing I can still do: provide kibble. Regular, nourishing meals are the only way to slow this weight loss and give her as much comfort as possible.
If my stocks run out and I can no longer feed her properly, I will watch her waste away without being able to do anything. For a dog who is already eating and still losing weight, the slightest drop in the quality of her meals means less time."

"My debts have reached several thousand euros, between the kibble, the vet... Until I have paid my supplier, I cannot order new bags from him. That is what is blocking me: it is not that I don't know what to buy, it is that I don't have the possibility to buy it.
The municipal subsidy has been cut, with no possibility of appeal. Thankfully, adoptions to the Netherlands are continuing, and that is a real breath of fresh air, but it does not pay the kibble bill. Summer is not even my worry: we have enough water, plenty of trees for shade...
The sticking point is only this debt and these dwindling reserves. Without a delivery to get me back on my feet, I am going to find myself trapped between a supplier I cannot pay and 117 dogs I have to feed every day."

"I have been running this shelter for twenty-one years. My days always begin the same way: with barking, that uproar the dogs greet me with every morning. Then I let them out in groups, I feed the puppies, the old dogs and the sick ones first, and when I have some, I hand out a few treats. I try to pet every dog at least a little, because they all wait for it, each one wants their moment.
The rotations continue, one group after another, until everyone has been let out of the kennels, which we clean and wash in the meantime, before refilling them with fresh water. And the day ends as it began, around the bowls, with the evening meal. It is the same rhythm every day, without exception.
People sometimes ask me where I still find the strength, after all this time. My answer has not changed since the first day: it is the immense love I have for these dogs that keeps me going. I am not asking for money. I am only asking for kibble, so I can keep filling these bowls and so that none of my dogs has to know hunger."
