Animal Webaction visited the site 23 November 2019 and confirms the situation described below.

In Serbia, Zvezdana no longer has any kibbles to feed street dogs, temperatures will drop to -10° !

Following Zvezdana's emergency call, we went on the spot on 23 November.

Zvezdana can no longer feed the street dogs, they will starve this winter.

The situation at the shelter is not much better, her 46 dogs eat dry bread.

Her retirement pension is her only resource, Zvezdana is already depriving herself of everything, she cannot buy kibble.

The only foreign association that supports her, with very few resources, is also begging us to intervene.

We want to help them, by sending 1200 kg of kibble as an emergency.

100% transparency guaranteed.

1. Zvezdana has no more kibbles to feed the street dogs, temperatures will drop to -10° this winter

Young female, Zuta overcame distemper when she was still a puppy. Still on the street, she suffers from nervous problems resulting from the disease. Due to lack of space and resources, Zvezdana cannot take her in, and hasn't been able to find her adopters so far

On the street, Deka is an old dog who can barely continue to use his hind legs. Zvezdana posted several calls for help to get him off the street, in vain

This young female has not yet been named, and the only survivor of her litter, but Zvezdana has no choice but to leave her on the street for the moment

Thrown out on the street overnight a few weeks ago, this old dog must now manage on his own....

"She is my biggest concern" Zvezdana told us about Bela. Left abandoned and chained outside by her owner, Bela only eats stale bread at best...

Last winter, temperatures dropped to -11°, conditions are very hard for street dogs, they cannot survive without kibbles!

"We have hungry dogs on the streets. Please, it's urgent, winter is coming" were Zvezdana's first words when she contacted us recently.

"There are a lot of dogs on the street that I can't take care of, of course I would take them if I could, but place is a problem," she explained with regret. Without an proper shelter, Zvezdana had to set up makeshift shelters points in 4 different places, all of which are now full.

Faced every day with abandoned dogs that she cannot get off the street, Zvezdana can now no longer feed them either...

2. Because she can no longer buy kibbles, the 46 dogs she shelters are fed with bread, some will not survive it

###
Completely alone to care for 46 dogs, Zvezdana can no longer get enough food to feed them all. "The situation is very bad. I fear the lack of dog food" she told us shortly before our visit

###
"I call bakeries and ask them if they are able to give us some of their leftovers. When they eat
pastry and bread only , they get diarrhea. I have to do that, for them, I can’t let them starve" Zvezdana explained

###
When we visited the shelter on November 23, there were only 25 kg of kibble left at the shelter. Lower end and bought in bulk, they are not very nutritious, but Zvezdana saves them to the maximum for the most vulnerable....

###
Rescued from the dogcatchers of Avenija MB, a private company in charge of capturing stray dogs in the worst possible conditions, Sarenko remains puny and fearful, he needs kibble to face winter

###
Only a few months old, Crna was found on the street, suffering from advanced skin disease and a weakened immune system. Sheltered by Zvezdana, she is still under treatment

###
While her former owners wanted to put her to sleep, Lola was rescued by Zvezdana. Paralyzed following a spine injury, Lola is particularly fragile....

###
Recently brought to Zvezdana in very poor physical condition, Mis is a young dog under one year old, whose body has suffered too much to bear the cold and malnutrition

###
Having had one leg amputated when she was just a puppy, Rea is now 9 years old and in poor health. She won't be able to cope with winter without kibble

"The situation is very bad. I fear for the lack of dog food" Zvezdana told us shortly before we came. On November 27th, she only had 15 kg of kibbles left, which she strives to keep as long as possible for the most fragile dogs, most of them only eat dry bread....

"I call bakeries and ask them if they are able to give us some of their leftovers. When they eat pastry and bread only , they get diarrhea. I have to do that, for them, I can’t let them starve. If the collection doesn’t succeed, they will have to eat bread"

With a harsh winter and poor health, the weakest will not be able to survive such a diet!

3. Zvezdana lives on a retirement pension only: her resources, time and energy are already all dedicated to dogs, she can't do more than this

###
"Zvezdana is fighting a fierce fight for the street dog. She gives the dogs first. She is losing weight in the winter and it worries me" said Tina, who supports her through her Danish association as much as possible

###
With no resources, but determined to save the street dogs, Zvezdana has set up no less than 4 small makeshift shelters on different sites, which she visits every day. Without the means to have a vehicle, she makes all her trips by bicycle, even in winter

###
Up before 6am, Zvezdana cares for the 46 dogs alone on a daily basis: "I clean and wash their boxes everyday, help wounded ones, change diapers, make sure that they are ok. I have to take out the trash, I barely have enough free time to go find food, and it pretty much continues through the whole day until 10 pm. I must take care of them, no matter the
season"

Zvezdana is now retired, and receives only a meagre pension to survive and maintain the shelter. She pays most of the costs herself, including food and medical care. "Sometimes I am forced to take loans in order to buy them food, it’s hard" she explained.

Without resources, Zvezdana has managed to set up 4 small shelters made of salvaged materials in 4 different places, and only gets around by bicycle, several kilometres a day, whatever the season.

Because she is already saving money by all possible means to keep her head above water, Zvezdana does not know how to solve her current difficulties: she can no longer afford to buy kibbles!

4. If we don't reach the target, dogs won't receive anything

A failed collection on Animal Webaction

We can take action, we have already booked a truck and pallets, but we have to pay it before December 2nd.

If the collection fails, we will not be able to pay, the departure of the truck will be cancelled and none of the collected kibbles will be delivered...

If the collection fails, we will refund all donors.

5. The only foreign association that supports the shelter is helpless, as it cannot buy kibbles either

Zvezdana has been supported for several years by an association based in Denmark, which strives to do its utmost to help her in her daily struggle. But the help she can provide is very limited in the face of Zvezdana's need to take care of abandoned dogs.

"We try to help her as best we can. But it is difficult. We helped  with a few puppies. Zvezdana is my hero. She is an amazing person and her heart is bleeding for the street dogs and the cruel world they live in" said Tina, President of the association.

6. Zvezdana is fighting for them, we must help them

###
Duska, 12 years old, is one of the elders of the shelter, which has about 30% of elderly dogs

###
Rescued from the street where he was particularly vulnerable, Lepa is now 5 years old

###
Srecka was still just a puppy when she was thrown over the gate in the shelter

###
Now 10 years old, Don is still suffering from the after-effects of a leg injury he suffered from while living on the streets

###
Malena, also rescued from the street, awaits patiently at the shelter

###
Zvzdana rescued Dzoni to prevent him from ending up at the pound, where he was supposed to be taken to

###
Abused by her former owners, Tigrica was taken to safety at Zvezdana's shelter

###
Rescued while he was still a puppy, Zucka is one of those who never had the chance to be adopted. Zvezdana has been able to protect him for the past 12 years

7. Zvezdana makes all the sacrifices for the dogs, but is afraid that she won't be able to feed them anymore

###

For 18 years, Zvezdana has been acting through her association for abandoned animals in Serbia, and does so with extremely few resources.

But she is particularly worried about the coming winter: "They don't have enough houses, not enough rugs, not enough food... With winter it will be more difficult, they will need more rugs and blankets to keep warm. I fear the lack of food, I feel so bad when I can't provide dog food for them. Please stay with us so that dogs have to eat."

8. In Serbia, 100,000 street dogs are hunted down by dogcatchers to be killed or trapped in killing pounds

Zvezdana' s shelters are located in the eastern central part of Serbia

It is estimated that Serbia has about 100,000 stray dogs. Private companies were commissioned in 2012 to capture these dogs: their dogcatchers (the name given to the employees responsible for the capture) have been operating throughout the country since then.

Receiving bonuses for each dog captured, dogcatchers hunt dogs relentlessly, and use extremely violent capture techniques. Many dogs are killed, the others end up crammed into killing pounds, without care or food.

Volunteers believe that their actions, in addition to being cruel, do not have a beneficial impact on the volume of stray dogs in the country. Worse still, they greatly undermine the beneficial actions that have existed until now: the subsidies allocated since 2007 as part of a vast national sterilization program have been drastically cut, despite encouraging results when they were carried out....

9. What will the 1200 kg of kibble be used for ?

This collection is organized by the ALISA association. The 1200 kg of kibbles collected will be delivered to Zvezdana to feed the 46 dogs she shelters, as well as the street dogs.
