1. In Serbia, Zuzana is almost out of kibble to feed the 102 dogs in her shelter. They will starve if no one helps!

%%%

"We have 102 dogs, including 23 recently rescued dogs, abandoned by owners who lost their job to the pandemic or moved away and did not bring their pets with them.

The resulting amount of work for our shelter is overwhelming: with more mouths to feed and donations still at their lowest, we are never sure if we will be able to feed the dogs and we can't buy kibble… Finding food has become a struggle: right now, we have 2 days’ worth of kibble and that's it.

It puts us under a lot of stress. We work long hours every day to give the best to these dogs, we don't want to see them unhappy and suffering, getting into fights over food. We don't even want to imagine what could happen if we can't feed the dogs at all."

2. Limited rescues, underfeeding: the lack of kibble is already harmful to the dogs in distress that Zuzana is trying to help.

###

"Although we would like to help every animal in need, the lack of food threatens dogs in distress on several levels.

On the one hand, since we don't even have enough kibble for the shelter, it is getting harder to feed stray dogs or rescue new ones. Knowing that they might starve is really tough. On the other hand, the dogs we rescue often come with a lot of medical issues, they are often sick and malnourished and need more food, but what we can provide is just enough for them to survive.

We worry because we can’t save every dog and if we don't rescue these dogs, nobody ever will. We have seen the poor conditions some of the dogs live in and it is heartbreaking, these animals deserve better and we are determined to help. However, we need more resources, we can't do it alone."

3. After two years of abuse and deprivation, Maya struggled to give birth and feed her 6 puppies… she is now completely exhausted, kibble will help her regain strength.

###

"Maya is about two years old, she has been in the shelter for a couple of months only. When she was reported to us, she had known only abuse: she slept outside on a concrete floor, and she was starved and pregnant.

We rescued Maya just in time: her uterus had fallen out and she had to have surgery so her 4 puppies could be delivered. She breastfed them despite the operation, she really took care of them quite bravely.

However, she is now exhausted, she went through all of this after having been malnourished for a long time! She is very fragile, very thin as well and full of scars, she will need good nutrition to recover."

4. Aid to the shelter is insufficient and irregular, it does not cover the dogs' food needs and Zuzana can no longer buy kibble.

###

"We live from day to day, we are always desperate and in need of help. We have only irregular subsidies and very few donations as people are donating less and less. Every month is different and we don't have a fixed income. At the moment we don't have enough money to buy food and we wonder every day if we will manage to find some kibble.

The medical costs for the wounded dogs are also extremely expensive. We try to give every dog a chance and that means some of them have had serious surgeries, which have resulted in a huge debt at the veterinarian's.

We need more resources and more space. We need more workers. We have a well only, no running water and we also don’t have electricity, which is very much needed. But first of all we need to settle the food, before being able to put our resources anywhere else."

5. Zuzana is not asking for money, only kibble to prevent her dogs from starving.

###

"In 2003, a local priest donated an abandoned house and we started bringing stray dogs there. Then, we managed to buy some land outside the city, we built what became our current shelter and we moved there. Since then, we have worked hard to build more houses and boxes for the dogs.

We try every option so that our dogs can have an amazing life, even if it means having less time for our families because we have to work at the shelter. We never want any dog to suffer, so we give everything we can.

We hope that this year will get better, that we can find a great home to the many rescued dogs who have known tough times and whom we are very proud of."

6. If this campaign succeeds, Zuzana will not receive any money but 2000 kg of kibble, delivered from Animal Webaction's logistics platform in Serbia.

Animal Webaction has a logistics platform directly in Serbia, which enables us to intervene quickly and deliver kibbles.

7. Zuzana goes out of her way to find supporters, but their means are limited: a successful campaign will ensure that dogs get to eat!

"We have some local support, although not for kibble: the municipality of Ada gave us a hand with vet fees and road work, and a local shop donated some trees that will be great in the summer to protect the dogs from the sun. However, other donations are scarce as people can't afford to give much, and we lack volunteers and foster families as well.

This is why we started a godfathering program for people in other countries to support dogs financially. They send some donations occasionally and we send them pictures of the dogs they support in exchange.

Unfortunately, none of this is enough to keep our dogs fed and it is hard to keep trying new options given the amount of work we have. It is a permanent struggle to keep the dogs healthy and alive, but we will fight to make sure they have a beautiful life."

8. Campaigns launched on Animal Webaction often fail.
